I did another OWS last night.  Fun times - it's going to be hard going back to the pool.  I also picked up a pair of Orca tri shorts that I like.

I like the idea of an Oly event, even if unofficial (which is more likely given my racing budget for the rest of the year).

I think the idea of an unoffical race is a great idea... Races are expensive these days!  That is why I only have 1 in the pipeline in prep for Ironman... The nutrition alone get's $$$$$

Hope all is well w/ people?!

For those of you that train w/ a HRM, do you wear it for races too?  Chest strap under the wetsuit or put it on in T1?

I'm not sure if I want to wear it to monitor effort during the race, ignore during the race and use it for effort analysis or just not wear it and just go.

thx

I think it is a good idea to wear during the race!  Especially being new to this.... It allows you to know whether you are pushing to hard on the swim, bike, or run...... I will wear one for my 1/2 Ironman, and Ironman, but I don't wear for sprint, or Olympics..... For those race's I used experience (what little I have), and "PERCIEVED EXERTION" (which is basically just how DEEP YOU FEEL YOUR FUEL TANK IS--- At this pace how long can I go, etc...)

And yes it will stay on under your wetsuit NO PROBLEM, and works well!  Swimming w/ an HR is good, just really hard to do in a pool!

I have a polar S150 I use for swimming and my garmin Forrunner 305 which I use for everything else.

I have been debating what to do in my next 2 sprints.  Nice thing about the forerunner is I can use it to see exactly how far I have left to go on the run so I know when to really push it to the finish.

Problem is it doesn't work in the water and putting it under my swim cap sounds like a real pain.

Either way I have a HRM and would wear it, just trying to figure out whether to keep it simple with the polar or go with the Garmin for all the detail.

I WOULD SAY K.I.S ------ KEEP IT SIMPLE!  Go w/ the Polar.... The course will have mile markers out there!

That would be nice to have an OWS group.

I have been trying to find a swim coach and had absolutely 0 luck.

One lady I have been exchanging e-mails with for a year and we can't find a date that works

Another lady was teaching in a lake in a community which would have been perfect but they don't let anyone teach there anymore.

There is a masters group that meets right down the street from my house, they do a stroke clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays, I went monday and Wednesday and the guy didn't post either day...

/sigh, I think there is a conspiracy against me getting better at swimming.

I can swim, but want to swim faster and longer which I think can conly be done with some better technique.

it would be even better if I actually went out with them.  We have been having thunder and lightning storms every night from 5-9 for the past week!!  Plus my bike is in the shop.  So, no riding, not even on the trainer, no running, and no swimming. Even the indoor pools close down during the lightning.  I am just sitting at home becoming very squishy.  The worst of it is, my kids are at their grandparents for 2 weeks.  The first week the hubby and I got in some great training, but then the storms started.......................  What are the odds that I would have a 2 week window of unlimited training, and mother nature would do this to me.  Boo hoo hoo

On the positive side, this weekend the family is off to the beach for a week vacation.  I don't know if I'll be brave enough to swim in the ocean, but I hope to get in lots of biking and running.  Oh, and the bike is getting a make over; new chain, cables, and girly pink bar tape.  Kind of silly, but oh well. I'll show her off, PROVIDING I EVER GET HER BACK!!!!!!!!!

That's hilarious. My staff was asking me what I was laughing at. You should pass that around to everyone in BT. I think they would love it too.

I saw that in the tri talk forum not too long ago, it was funny then too!

As far a swim lessons go, a friend of mine got some good pointers from an instructor at our local country club.  He even came out to the lake to watch him swim.  Not saying you have to go the CC, but maybe one of the insturctors from a local pool might be willing to work with you on the side or something.

Driving 2300 miles can screw up your training. Oh well, I am in one place for now, but limited internet access in a cabin on a lake in Northern Wisconsin. On the positive side my swiming yours will be way up this month. I just hope I don't get swimmers ear.

I did a 5k on the 4th of July in Parkcity Utah at 7000 feet, got to love that elevation with 1000 people. I finished in 23:09 even with the masses of people to get through to find open air. BTW that is fast for me. My son finished in 24:37, my wife and mother inlaw also completed it.

I ended up 7th out of 47 in age group and the winner in age group was like 17 minutes ... ouche. The guy with the 3 children in a stroler finsished in like 19 minutes double ouche.

I blew out a back tire (not the tube) yesterday and was very glad that I had gotten an emergency cell phone for just that reason. No harm to the bike and I actually found a place that had decent replacement treads for me yay.

14 mile run today was sucky, in the rain, and poor endurance. I am not sure how much swimming doing alot of swimming is impacting my endurance overall. Oh well, it will all pan out in the wash. My average heart rate was 154 over 2:30:30 ish so there really isn't anything I could have done to speed it up. That's just where i was at and what I was able to do today. Water and nutrition were fine.

Anyway that's me for the past 2 weeks (family reunions etc.). I hope to do my first Oly at the end of the month and since I have been swimming more I am now confident that I will be able to finishe the swim of 1 miles or whatever, even if slowly.

Loggin off for now. That was a totaly funny/scary vid of that guy swimming getting abused by the guys in the boats. Night.

Steve. Way to hang in there with the training. It definitely isn't much fun in the rain and 14 miles in it has to be down right depressing unitl you are finished . Hang in with the swimming. Your oly swim is just under a mile, about .93 or 1500 meters.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, and good workouts?  My plan is 5-6 hour ride tomorrow, a 75 minute swim, followed by a 90 minute run Sunday....

Oh yeah, and some wine in between!

Well it's official, I am now a triathlete.  I finished my first sprint this morning in roughly 1:34:xx.  The race was a 1/3 mile swim, 14.8 mile ride and 4 mile run.  The only disappointment was the lack of chip timing, so no splits- and maybe only one water station on the run (zero on bike, but hey I've got a bottle cage)

The swim was chaotic and I can't believe it's legal.  I have no idea how the Ironman competitors do it w/ 2000 people.  I'd guess there were about a 100 guys (the women had their own wave), and it was nuts.  My wife guestimated I was in the top 25-30 coming out of the water, which I think is pretty accurate given my overall finish and the number of people that passed me on the bike, probably 20 or so.

The bike was an out and back course that was mostly flat and up going out, so nice and easy coming back. I think I did the 14.8 mile ride in 46:30, again it would be nice to have splits. I got passed on the flats by some fast dudes, but made a couple spots back on the hills.

I really felt like a zombie on the run, I kept trying to equate distance remaining w/ landmarks on my training runs to convince myself that I could do it.  I ended up running the 4 miles in about 33 mins, so that was a nice surprise given that I felt like I was shuffling.  I did have some calf cramps at the beginning of the run, but was able to work through them and they didn't bother me after about 1/4 mile.  Overall position change was zero on the run. I was passed by three while stretching out calves, but made those up in the form of other victims.

All-in-all, I had a blast.  My tag was #55 on the overall board and I'm guessing about 200 competitors (I had race #186).  I met some BTers in transition before the race and there were people from my work and church doing the race too.  Talking with everyone pre-race kept me from getting nervous and I wasn't nervous at all when we got in the water (might have been had I known what was about to be unleashed )

I can't wait to do it again.

ETA: Race report will be done when the official results are available.

Congrats Matt.... Hot day today.... This explains the cramping.  What did you have in your water bottles??? Need more SALT on warm days!

Again great job!

Thanks.  I had some weak Gatorade in one bottle, water in the other.  I also ate a couple shot bloks before the race and one on the bike - had two on the bike, but one managed to make a clean getaway before its time had come.

I felt tightness in my calves on the bricks I did in training to, just not as intense as today.  I think the cure is salt and more bricks.

I hope everyone had a great weekend.
I got some good training in. Saturday I did a 85 minute bike ride approx 38km. The day was cloudy and I did hit a little rain but overall it was a nice easy ride. Sunday I spent some great quality time with my family and this moring I did 800 m swim and 14.7Km bike ride.
Now it's time to do some work.
Have a great day everyone.

Great job!

Have my 3rd tri in 2 weeks and my 4th the week after, lol will see if I have enough training in me to pull off 2 tri's in 2 weeks.  Only really nervous about the 2nd tri because it has a 750M OWS and my longest tri swim so far has been 400M in a pool...

Found a couple swim instructors and found out the masters coach had some personal issues last week which is why he didn't show up 2x so going to give him another shot tonight also.

It's race week, and I am feeling extremely crapping...  My chest issues flared up again during my ride on Saturday, and I can not stop coughing or spitting up stuff... I am going to find a new doctor this week and see if we can't kick this thing once and for all....  I can "cope" with it, however when swimming I spit up stuff, biking is ok, and during the run I can't lower my HR @ ALL.... This is concerning, concerning the weather is going to be 95 degree's on race day....

Very very low expectations, frustrations, and disappointments for this week.....
