I got my Bell Array helmet in the mail yesterday, I'm now ready to take on to the streets...BEWARE! Bahaha...I've haven't ridden a road bike since my childhood and I picked one up on craigslist last Nov and then we got all that snow for the last few months.  I'm excited to take it for a spin.

Go get 'em, Matt!!!  And be careful out there!  I'm still too nervous to ride my bike on the road until all the snow banks are completely receded and all the shoulders are clear.

VERY EXCITED!  My wife called to let me know my new saddle has arrived!  I got an ISM Adamo Ergonomical Road Saddle and will be installing it tonight.  I'm looking forward to taking my old, hard-as-concrete, a**-breaking, saddle and tossing it!

Sounds like all the equipment is coming in, getting ready for spring! I just got permission to get new bike shoes - which I am pretty excited about since the ones I have are about 15 years old. Any recommendations for bike shoes? What do you like? What don't you like? (they need to be Look compatible, but otherwise, I'm open to suggestions).

Off to Missouri tomorrow (weather permitting)...looking forward to a bike AND run on Saturday! Watch out March - here I come!

I have these.  http://www.ajssportinggoods.com/lifesports/product.asp?s_id=0&prod_name=%2709+Specialized+BG+Trivent+Men%27s+Triathlon+Shoe&pf_id=SP_6108-3&dept_id=84011  and I love them.  They are my third pair, and also my favorite.  I was able to go sockless right out of the box, and they are great for leaving them on the pedals in T1 and T2.

I also love my shoes.  I am able to go sockless with them, but usually err on side of caution and wear thin biking socks.  I've had them for 2 1/2 years and they are the only bike shoe I've owned, so I don't have any frame of reference.  I bought them because of the BT review above.

Ran 8 miles this morning.  Feeling quite sore this afternoon, but just general muscle soreness, nothing to be concerned about.  I attached my new saddle last night and will give it a go tomorrow morning on the trainer.  We're expecting another 10" of snow over the next 48 hours.  Soooooo sick of the snow!

Welcome back Jenn,

My only recommendation is to make sure it is a Tri shoe.  I bought some shoes for my road bike that weren't and when it rained my shoes would fill up with water!  Frown  So I learned my lesson and had to buy another pair of shoes this time they had holes at the bottom that let water drain from the swim and also if rains my shoe doesn't fill up with water.

I'm cheap so I picked these up at a performance bike sale one day...seem to work well enough but I'm not an expert, this being my first pair of cycling shoes.

I have a pair of the LG Tri Air 2 and love them. 6000+miles in them.  If you put a list of all the features you want they meet everything. Only cleaned them once.

I have never understood road shoes, in theory you get a bit more stiffness, but no drainage? poor air flow? too many adjustments?

What do you think?

Great write up Warren!  Very interesting information.  I agree and think your plan is good.  I was injured last year early on doing running speed work and I couldn't do too many races because of it.  So staying healthy and getting to the finish line uninjured is half the battle.

I am considering getting a transition bag.  For those who have one, which do you recommend?

My backpack. Seriously...I don't leave it under the bike (I usually have time to unpack, get set up and ferry the backpack back to the car before the race start). Being kind of cheap, I'd rather spend my money on new bike shoes Smile.

Aaron, I have a question regarding the VDOT.

I plug in my latest race 5K 20:02 (using http://www.runbayou.com/jackd.htm). I generally try to run a long run, tempo and interval.

My easy run (long) should be at 8:40 pace...nice, that is much slower than I am use to.

If I do 800 intervals those would be at 3:00 - 3:10 pace.

Which pace should I run my tempo at?  Do those numbers sound right?

Same. I try not to leave anything sitting around.

How long are your long runs? One thing about the calculators is that they are geared towards runners who are typically running more per week than we are. I would say looking at your logs your paces are good. I would try to get a 4th run in each week. I would say you could surely do a faster 5k. If you can not fit another 1-2 short runs each week I would keep doing what you are doing.

I got a "triathlon backpack" as an entry gift when I did the PA Steelman race last summer.  I don't know what the brand is, but it's nice to have.  It has several different compartments for all your stuff and is bigger than a standard backpack so you have room for a couple towels, change of clothes, etc.  I also like it because I used to just use a duffle bag, which was hard to carry when you're also carrying a wetsuit and pushing your bike.  If I can remember, I'll see if I can get a brand name off it this weekend.

I'm just checking in.  I've been away at Smuggler's Notch skiing with the clan, and I'm actually getting a ton of training in!  I haven't had a chance to catch up on all the posts, and I only have a short time online, so I'll catch up when I get back Sunday night.

A few comments though:
1. Snow shoeing is HARD!
2. Skiing uses different muscles than running and biking - I'm sore.
3. I love swimming.

Sounds like Fun, Warren.

I have a wet-bag I use for the wetsuit (which I inherited from my uncle for that early question about wetsuits) and just use a regular old medium sized duffel for my other crap. It has some outer pouches which I use for to hold nutrition and sunglasses and stuff.

ok, so another aero bar question...or sort of related.

What do I do with the top mount brake levers that are on the cross-bar of the handlebars? I kinda wedged the aero clip on brackets in between them but they're basically useless now since the elbow pads are in the way of use. Do people just take them off, or move them to the end of the aero bars (I don't think I've ever seen that but it might be nice to be able to brake from the aero position?)? ...or do not that many bikes come with those top-mounts?

Are they redundant? Like an extra set of stuff to grab to break with? I would remove them. Take a picture first or find a similar one, maybe I am thinking of something completely different.

my wife has a second set of brakes on her bike on top of the bars. These are the extra brakes to go with the regular brake/gear shift levers. If they are the same type, I'm surprised you were able to get the aero bars on there. But I would take them off - no need for them when you can't get your hands to them.

plus - it's less weight - which means you go faster when in AERO!!! Cool

definitely a redundant set...I'll look into how to remove them. Looks like the cable passes straight through to the other levers.
