Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread ***WARNING: SHAMELESS PLUG FOR MY FUNDRAISING EFFORTS BELOW*** Just thought I would share with you guys a fundraising effort I am involved with that is officially "launching" with my race. I lost both my mother & brother to colon cancer, both passed away at a relatively young age (39 for my mother, 52 for my brother). I've been involved for several years with the Colon Cancer Coalition, which raises money for colon cancer programs through their series of "Get Your Rear in Gear" running races. Having lost two family members to colon cancer, I know what a financial and emotional toll caring for a cancer patient, especially an end-stage patient, can take on families and caregivers. I have long felt there was a need for programs to help support families during this difficult period. My mom and brother were both very family oriented, so I thought it would be great to start a fund in their memory to help provide financial and emotional support for families and caregivers of colon cancer patients. The Tony Snow and Betty Jo Caregiver Network fund officially launches with my race on August 11. Funds will be collected over the next several months, and we will begin distributing "grants" to help provide services for families/caregivers during the summer of 2013. If this sounds like a program you would like to support, consider making a donation here: http://getyourrearingear.com/caregivers/ |

TriBike told me they will bring back your bike and transition bags but (as mentioned) not special needs. Let's hope they are reliable! Only wrinkle is you cannot get your bike until the next day. Not an issue for me as I am staying over anyway...I think it is well worth the $50. Also doing athlete tracker so family can get updates on my progress and not have to stand around for hours waiting for me to arrive in Manhattan. Those two things will hopefully make the complicated logistics a little easier...... When you say athlete tracker are you talking Ironmanlive or a GPS unit or maybe other?
Think I am using http://www.myathletelive.com/for my tracker. Just thought I'd jump in and hijack the thread! No, not really. I wanted to comment on the MyAthlete tracker. I used one for IM Moo last year and thought it was great, it allowed my family to see fairlly "real-time" where I was on the course and they could plan their day around it. The iPad version of the tracker seemed to be slightly better than the iPhone one, but both worked well. One word of caution, though.....absolutely do a short test run with the tracker around your waist before race day. I didn't do this and I wish I had. The unit itself is basically a 2" x 1" cube, about the size of a toy matchbox car. But it weighs almost twice what a toy car would. This unit is inside a small pouch which is attached to a race-type belt, similar to the Fuel Belt race belts. The issue is that the extra weight tends to bounce when running, and I was not prepared for that. I didn't notice this until T2 on race day, and as soon as I took two steps out of T2, I decided I wasn't going to deal with this bouncing for 26 miles and ditched the thing in my Bike to Run bag. So just be prepared, and realize it could be something new if you're not used to bulky items around your waist. Good luck to you guys doing the race next weekend! I'll be doing the weather dance and offering sacrafices to the weather gods for you. Steve Thanks! Trying it out is good advice...which had not really occurred to me. Hopefully it is not too annoying. |

I just fear this huge pile that you have to sort through yourself. Which brings up another question....if TriBike can return up to 5000 Transition bags, what's so hard about bringing the Special Needs bags back too? I did notice that after 10pm, cars are allowed in Ross Dock, so that's an option to pick up your bike and bags. It was the same deal when I did LP. They didn't guarrantee you'd get back your SN bags.....and I didn't. Just put disposable stuff in there that you can do without. I think you should expect to get your morning clothes bag back, but to be safe I wouldn't put anything super important in there either. As for Transition bags, they'll be hung up and numbered so (theoretically!) it should not be difficult. My guess is Tri-Bke will be sorting and packing all night to get everything over to the IM Village ready for pick-up by 9AM Sunday. In addition to the Valet Service they are also shipping bikes back to all parts of the U.S. or wherever....It is bound to be a little chaotic fro sure. The bottom line is I have no other realistic option for getting my bike and am just hoping for the best! |

If it's anything like the setup they had at IMTX, a giant pile of bags is what you should expect. Not necessarily a pile but rows upon rows of bags. It doesn't take as long as you would think but to make it a bit easier you may want to add a couple of girlie ribbons to the bag ties. It'll not only ensure you grab your bag quicker during the race (and ensure you have the right bag) but it will make identifying your bags at pickup significantly easier. There were so, so, many Mavic wheel bags at IMTX it took a while so I can only imagine what it'll be like on Sunday with transition bags. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Ironman U.S. Championship : Official Thread How about the Thursday evening welcome banquet...anyone going? I didn't go when I did my other IM...some people said wasn't particularly worth it. Nice video was shown, but that was the extent. And for guests, it would be $50 for Coney Island Hot Dogs (that's one of the items on the menu.) How about the "mandatory" athlete briefing that follows? Is it really mandatory? Are guests allowed? |

I'm hoping that if they say something life changing in the brief, one of our BT attendees will post it. Otherwise we'll all be up way before the butt crack of dawn and we can figure it out. I also want to just hang with my wife the night before. |

That said, I just signed up myself. For me $50 is worth it to not have the hassle of making your way back over there after the race. Plus the pickup on Sunday should be right around IM village where everyone will be for finishers gear anyway. Never expect to get your special needs bags back. I would venture to say never expect to actually use your special needs bags. Stuff happens, think about what you would do if your bag wasn't there for you halfway through. Would it ruin your race? What is everyone doing with their wetsuits post race? I actually signed up to get my bike transported over to the pier so my wife didn't have to go get it. Then I realized I was going to have a wetsuit. Are they going to take those as well? Anyone know? |

The "mandatory" meeting is hardly such. They just go over everything that you already know from the packet and its usually jammed full of people. Everyone is welcome at it, at least in my experience. runnerx - 2012-08-02 4:02 PM How about the Thursday evening welcome banquet...anyone going? THANKS for posting. Most people that are going for Kona slots probably already know this, but the slots are actually allocated based on the number of participants in the actual race, not how many are signed up. You would assume your numbers should still be about right, but that's what they're actually based on. Regardless, thanks for the break down. |
