Holiday + Bike path = obstacle course.

So I went out for a ride/run yesterday to my typical bike route.  This bike route is the silver comet trail which starts just west of Atlanta and goes out about 60 miles to the Alabama border.  Normally a great trail other then the road crossings.

My working theory heading out was that being a holiday everone would be at home grilling, drinking, and having a good time.  That was a miscalculation on my part.  There were people everywhere!!!  Most of us that normally use the trail day to day know the rules of the road but the memo obvious was not widely distributed.  People were on the right, left, center, blocking the whole path, kids and dogs running everywhere.  I thought that if I just kept going the crowds would thin out but man it was packed for at least 20-30 miles.  I was only doing a 40/4 so I had about 10 miles of relatively open path.  Lesson learned!

On the bright side I bought a new "triathlon" saddle and changed the position of it on the bike a little.  WOW!!  I had no idea riding a bike could be this comfortable.  In addition, I guess it was the change to a more forward position but I averaged 2 miles per an hour faster on yesterday ride.  I am not sure if it was a fluke thing but I hope that I can keep that up.

Happy Tuesday everyone

Patriot HIM only 4 days away! I am so looking forward to doing this tri. It has been a full three months since i have done a tri and 2 years since I have done this distance. I know i am in better shape then my last Half but we will see. This race is just a feeler to see what is needed for Florida.

I hope my plan to hold off racing was the right one. I just didn't want to burn out and wanted my peak to be in Florida.

We just hit the 59 day mark. Less than two months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry if this question has already been answered. What is the closest airport to Panama City? Does Southwest fly anywhere near Panama City? Hubby and son may fly out instead of driving.

How is everyone's weekend going? I had a long training day today. Sprint tri tomorrow morning with a 16 mile run tomorrow. I'm probably going to run home from the race since it is close to our house. I'm looking forward to having Monday off as a rest day.

Ft Walton Beach (VPS) also has an airport...closer than Pensacola.  Not sure if Southwest files in there.

Southwest closet airport I can find is Birmingham AL which is 280 miles. I'm looking at flying there if I come so I can bring my bike for $50 each way. Fares are inexpensive though and for me I'd fly through Tampa.

Panama City has an airport, but not too much flies into there. Tallahassee and Pensacola are almost equidistance. I flew to Pensacola when I volunteered last year. It's about a 2 hour drive. But not too bad.

Rene- if you don't have a driving crew, and want to caravan to PCB, let me know. I plan on driving to Houston and spending the night with friends on Tuesday night, and then heading fo FL on Wed...so we could always link up for the drive.

Tallahassee is farther than Pensacola as I've flown to Tallahassee twice in past years.

IMFLers, I rode 90 miles of the course on Sunday; front beach to 79 to 20 to 231 and return. Construction on Hwy 79 to Hwy 20 is almost complete. There is one small section that is undone, but a very good riding conditions. If anyone else is using the "bridge from HIM to IM" like I am, this is a recovery week, and I am looking forward to it! Physically I feel good, training sessions are going ok, schedule is putting pressure on the rest of my life...

Alpha Girl - 2009-09-04 11:19 PM I also just finished IM Louisville. Sorry about the DNF. I think Florida will do you right. I live in hot, flat South Ga. and I am looking forward to seeing what I can do on the bike. It will be interesting to see if I have anything in the tank when IM FL comes around. Right now I'm tired as expected. Plan to take 2 weeks off, then get back in the saddle. Not looking forward to the ocean swim. If ANYONE is going to PC for a practice swim, please let me know.

I was TOTALLY unprepared for the hills.  I had done some bridge work here in Jax, as well as lots of riding out of the saddle, but neither of these prepared me for the non-stop hills.  And whoever set up the advertising as "rolling hills" clearly doesn't live where it's pancake flat.  I was cooked at the end of the run, and could hardly run at all on the marathon.  The nutrition plan worked very well, though (so there are SOME positives to be gained from IMKY).  Took last week off completely (except for 750yd swim).  Starting back up easy this week, w/o running.

Hopefully the ocean swim won't be too bad.  I've been scouring the net looking for feedback on how bad the chop is, etc.  I'm not sure I like the 2 loop part of the swim.  That said, the combination of salt water and wetsuit should eliminate most boyancy issues I have.

Has anyone seen (or have experience) with the best wheels to ride in IMFL?  I was thinking about 808's front and back, but I'm concerned with the impact of cross winds on the front 808.  I have a friend who rode 808's at IMKY and got blown around quite a bit.

I was planning on rear disk with HED 3 on front. I looked at some of finishers of last years race and it seems to have quite a few with 808's or something similar for front and mixed on back between disk and a wheel to match their front.

I'll be going with a disk and HED3 front.  Also, I'll be praying for light wind!

In 2007 I used a HED3 on the front and a disc on the back and had no problems, even toward the end the wind was about 20mph and it handled well.  I'm using Zipp 1080 and disc this year, I do notice with the 1080 control issues with cross winds, I believe the HED3 are easier to handle.  All we can do is pray for the winds to be clam.

In the past 2006 the chop wasn't too bad about 2-3ft waves, but enough to slow you down, I was there to sign up for 2007 and practiced.  In 2007 the year I swam it, the ocean was clam very little chop most of it was from the swimmers.  Last year it was like glass out there smooth.  I like the 2 loop one thing you must remember I don't take in a lot of water when I swim, that said I still had a "rough or scratchy" throat feeling from the little bit of water I did take in, it was very nice to get some water and gatorade to rinse your mouth out, plus I got my goggles knock off and I never did quite get the water all out, so it was nice to be able to adjust them also.

2 months! Wow, it seems like just yesterday when I signed up. Has it really almost been a year? Time flies when you're having fun. Or when you train 20 hours a week, work full time, eat and sleep the other waking hours.

I have run into a 3 day period where I haven't been able to workout due to family stuff that came up.  I feel terrible!!!  Is this was an Ironman taper feels like.  If so I am dreading the weeks leading up to the race.  All I want to do right now is go out and run.  You end up feeling so tired and fat it just feels terrible.  Being a reformed couch potato I never thought I would feel this way.  Very strange.

Anyways, there is my gripe for the day.  I will get that run in when my wife gets home and takes over the child care duties.

57 days and change.  Happy Thursday.

I am actually taking this week off too. I am counting on my training from before to carry me. Gotta admit, I am getting antsy, especially when I read what everyone else is doing. As for wheels, if I could afford it, I'd ride with 404's in the front and 808's in the back. Take your training wheels and if it really kicks up that week, go with them. I did Louisville in just training wheels, and I had a good ride. I managed the "rollers" only because I went on two century rides in North Ga that kicked my rear. I am hoping that the flats will be my friends and the winds will be at my back!

IMFLers--okay, life has been crazy for me, but I gotta get on this t-shirt thing if we're going to do it. I cannot give you prices yet, cause it depends upon how many are ordered. The more ordered, the less it costs.  I need to have t-shirt committments NLT say 21 Sept.  Then, I can get a price quote, and then y'all can send me money.  I will have both a pay pal and a check option. I will start a DIFFERENT thread specifically to get t-shirt sizes and numbers. I will post the link here once it is started.  If you put down a # and type, I expect you to honor that when it comes money time. The choices will be between an athlete shirt and a support crew shirt, each in regular t-shirt material and dri-fit material. Last year the regs were $15 or so and the dri-fit were $24.
T-shirts will look like this, with the BT logo on the front, and the "Support Crew" will only be on the ones for the support crew, otherwise it won't have any wording there. Go check the IronForum for T-shirt thread.

By the way they have now paved hwy 388 so it will be less bumpy. YEAHHH

Thanks Brittany for organizing the t-shirts. The Aggie's will have to wear orange for the first time in their lives! lol

This is a lower intensity training week for me. I feel horrible and achy from not working out.  My coach thinks I may be anemic. I've been ordered to go and do something "fun" that is not triathlon related.
