OWS question:
Just curious where the local athletes do their OWS? Can you swim the course anytime? Or, more appropriately, can you safely swim the course at 6am on a Sunday AM?

I am heading up for a training weekend - including an organized OWS clinic at the end of July, but am considering at least one other trip to ride the course and would like to swim as well.

Also, anyone have any suggestions on favorite microbreweries or good, healthy restaurants in the downtown capital area. I know there are a dizzying array of choices – looking for some recommendations for “must visit” places.

Thanks

The Great Dane has good food and good variety on their menu. They also brew their own beer.

As for microbreweries...I love Ale Asylum and Capital. Both offer a nice array of styles, seasonals, etc. Capital makes a great OktoberFest (should be able to pick up around IM time) and Ale Asylum's Ambergeddon is fantastic with a good hunk of red meat...just had a couple of Hopalicious from AA, last night, as well.

Locals can speak better to the OWS and restaurants. I've heard good things about The Old Fashioned on Cap Square and always wanted to try it . The Tornado is a great steak joint 1/2 block off the Square.

Where are most of you in the Madison area doing your long open water swims?.... and how has the swimming been? (rode 130 miles Sunday with some loop work, I need to switch gears a bit)

Lake Wingra on the weekends. No gas powered boats are allowed on the weekends or Lake Monona early AM but staying between the buoys and the shore.

Anyone going to use disk or wheelcover for IMOO? With all the hills and turns, my gut says to leave the cover at home. My normal wheels are semi-aero. I'll be MOP (for old farts), at best, but I don't want to leave the cover at home if it will be of any help. Thanks.

Use the wheel cover if you want to go faster.  (Search the forums and you'll find about 10^6 posts on the topic of disks and hilly courses.)  FWIW, I used a disk last year at IMWI and plan to do the same again this year.

IdealMuse - 2011-06-29 12:45 PM Make sure you get in early though. I'm talking like 20 minutes. Otherwise you will get caught up in the bottle neck and will have a rough start... or worse not even in the water when the swim starts.

Tread water for 20min before the start?

Or float on your back for a bit.  Or swim around.  Or float in your wetsuit.  Or hang on the ski jump.  Or stand in the water by the shore.  You don't have to do water polo style egg beater for 20 minutes.  Laughing

Main thing is to be through the very narrow and crowded choke point that is the timing mat entryway into the water in enough time to get yourself into a good position for the start.

Had a great week on the course, got in tons of miles on the bike and a few runs. Spent most of our riding touching pieces of the course, but so many nice climbs off the course. Don't want to go back home

Play "Marco Polo" to break the ice and get rid of the jitters.

I just got a reservation for IMWI at the "Madison Concourse and Governor's club"

Looks like it's pretty close and fairly nice.

Anyone know if this is a good spot to stay??

Its a nice place, 4 blocks from Monona terrace and a block off of the run course. The only complaint I had staying there would be that day after the race, give yourself ample time to check out. The elevators are always full.

You'd should post one of these updates every minute.

It's funny, but whenever anyone asks me how long it is until the race, I can quote them the number of weeks to go without hesitation.  8 from this coming Sunday, in case anyone forgot!

I stayed there last year.  It was great.  I was on a floor that had concierge access.  That got us into a private area with food and drinks (both alcohol and non) away from the crowds.  It was only about a 10 minute walk to the start.  If I do IMWI again I would stay here.

Hey Fred,

I registered for the hotel at the same time I signed up onsite for the race.  I think it was one of the room types\options available at the time.  Give them a call and ask them they may have some available.
