GoFaster - 2011-01-08 7:48 AMDid my 3min power test last night and upped the wattage - along with having done the same on my 20min test a couple of days ago.  That moves my CP to 239 and watts/kg to 3.44.  When I started Jorge's program in November my first tests had me at a CP of 213 and watts/kg at 3.07.

So to date, I'm really happy with the progress.  I know the first handful of watts will come the easiest, but with the goal of getting up to 3.7-3.9 watts/kg, at least I'm on my way.
Congrats! I just posted a gain as well, 259 to 268 W. Though, as you pointed out in the Cycling Program thread, I may have sandbagged my 20 min test...oops

Nice improvement for you too!

How long between the 259 and 268?

Often folks muck up first test or two as we need to learn how to pace well and how hard is right for 20' or 3'. It isn't sandbagging but learning.

I'm curious where I am FTP wise. I have a summer high and winter just back on the trainer low I have been pretty consistent with over the last 4 years. Really hoping to get over 200 this year if I can train consistently w/o injuries.

Fred Doucette - 2011-01-08 5:17 PM Funny, I was having a little pain in the back of my knee, lateral hamstrings area on the bike. I called my fitter and moved the seat (up or down, can you guess?) the width of 3 credit cards. Guess what, problem resolved. Which way do you think he told me to move it?

I would usually guess down.

Well got a nice 40 mile ride in on the new bike.  My first ride on a carbon bike and first ride with Di2 group.  Very pleased.  Position feels more aggressive based on where I am on the bike but I was comfortable.  I am much more out over the aerobars than on the Cervelo P1.  Just did an easy 1.5 hours and then a couple of 10 minute intervals.  The Di2 is amazing. Very smooth and precise.  First time on the Adamo saddle in about 10 days so I did not want to overdo it.

I will try to attach a photo. I dont usually ride with my race wheels but my training wheels w/PT were to be put on bike and shipped.  There was a mix up and stock wheels were sent.  I wanted to have PT numbers so used the race wheels. Will put training wheels on when they get in.

My photography skills are about like my swimming-mediocre on the best of days.

259 was first week of November. 268 was this week. I have been following Jorge's plan, but had to take 4 weeks straight with no bike in the middle unfortunately.

Sweet lucking bike....I'm jealous of your group....do you have shifters both on your aerobars and bullhorns?

May you have many fast and fun miles together

Super looking bike, Randy, and with Di2, sweet!! So, today on the bike I was introduced to a whole new world of hurt--actual mountain like climbs. I was told it was a hilly route---I'm from TX, hills = something that takes a few minutes, you know 5-10 to get over, hurt a bit, and continue on--typically rolling.  In California, apparently, hilly routes mean riding through the MOUNTAINS and going several MILES uphill.  It took us 1:35 to go 20 miles--and I was actually near the FOP as I spun up the hill mountain at a good 8-9mph!!  I stayed strong the whole ride, which is good--but wow, miles of climbing is something new for me. It was in the low 40's when we started and I felt overdressed on the uphills as I was working hard and breaking a good sweat.  THEN, we hit the descents (with lots of serpentine like roads, which I found I DO NOT have good skills for either, at high speed at least) and I felt UNDERdressed as it was cold.  BUT wow did we get some absolutely AMAZING views as we looked out over the mountains to the west.  4000+ feet of climbing in 42 miles.  That's some good CdA training...the group was primarily training for CdA, so I hope to ride with them more.

I called my fitter and moved the seat (up or down, can you guess?) the width of 3 credit cards. Guess what, problem resolved. Which way do you think he told me to move it?

In general:

If the seat is too HIGH, pain/discomfort can develop behind the knee, calf muscles (Gastrocnemius) and hamstring muscles.  This is called posterior.  Another reason for pain/discomfort in this area can be saddle too far back.

If the seat is LOW, stress can be placed on the knee from the Patellar and Quadriceps tendons.  So this is transcribes to pain/discomfort at the knee cap (Patella), in front below Patellar tendon to were it connects to the shin bone (Tibia).  I believe this is called Anterior.  Some other pain/discomfort in this area can also be caused by saddle too far forward, foot too far forward on the pedal and or cleat position.

Cleat positioning can also be causes on any pain/discomfort but in general it is the last thing looked at after height and saddle position.

I attached a picture to see if my anatomy is correct.

A golden Blue!  Very nice Randy!

Let us know how the Di2 group works for you.  Where is the battery located at?

Fred Doucette - 2011-01-09 6:44 AM @ Randy. Beautiful bike! Questions? Where is the battery? When do you go for your wind tunnel time? How much drop is there currently from your seat to aero pads?

Fred-the battery is located under the bottom bracket and is very easy to access.  To charge you pull the battery and put it in a charger that plugs into a regular outlet. Alot like a camera battery charger.  Full charge is suppose to take 1.5 hours.  Very easy.  There is a small indicator in the wiring near the aerobars that indicates amout of charge remaining.

Not sure on the wind tunnel time.  The facility is in Mooresville NC.  That is about 700 miles from me. Heading up that way in March with my son to  look at some colleges so may try to fit that in.  I think it would be an eye opener.  Not sure on the drop-waiting on the fitter to forward the numbers to me.  I think he said it was 8cm during the fit but I really dont know-does not look like that much.  There are a couple spacers that can be removed down the road.  But, I am an old man so comfort is extremely important to me.

I am unsure if I will change out the aerobars.  These are most similar to what was on my P1 but they seem a bit taller and bend angle seems greater.  Will go back to Atlanta at some point in the Spring to make needed changes after putting some mileage on the bike.

I really appreciate all of your efforts with this group.  I was in a great group this Summer and really enjoyed it.  You do a good job of raising issues that we are all interested in and seemingly all have opinions on.

Randy

Fred Doucette - 2011-01-09 7:51 AM Yes, the answer to my question was lower the seat, but only by a tiny bit. As James said a less common cause can be the seat to far aft. I have an 8 mile run on today, what about you folks, what's on tap for today?

I plan to run but how long depends on my knee but pleased today knee is feeling pretty good. I will either swim or bike as well. I am starting structured training tomorrow after 2 month break.

I had a good discussion with my coach yesterday about both the big picture and the weekly flow of my training. For now I'm focused on bike/swim and losing weight...plan will do 4 swims; work towards 2 FTP type intervals, 1 zone 5, and a zone 3 longer ride; and run will be dependent on how my knee recovers.

We talked about ideal balance of training if I was healthy.... roi on 4 swims vs more running and/or biking, and decided most likely more r/b would have more potential for improvement.

Have fun training everyone!

I love the first part...comfort is extremely important to me as well.

After I got my Ordu in May, I had my knee scoped in June, then in July I visited my fitter to make some adjustments. My fitter put on a new shorter stem and flipped it over so it had negative rise, and was significantly lower then I had been riding. For about 1 hour it was okay then the discomfort in my upper back increased. I did a Oly race and for my watts I was fast ...pace was same even with about 25 watts less than previous races on same course. Riding in that position was okay and clearly faster in Oly but was not possible for longer race with my flexibility and fitness at the time. I will play around with lowering aerobars while on the trainer this winter by removing one spacer at a time and see how that position feels.
