Hi all,

Just joining into the conversation.  This will be my 2nd IM, after finishing IMLP last year.  Last year my focus was solely on finishing, so looking to improve my time a bit this time around.

My training plan starts up next week, so looking forward to getting back into training for IM in July and adding to the discussions here.  LP is a great place and I can't wait to get back.

That was what I felt my problem was, too.

I'm all paired up and good to go. Thanks to Jeff for the suggestion/ help.

Forecast to get up to 2ft of white stuff this weekend, so I may be getting very familiar with the programs!

Now if I could just get my butt in a pool......

How did it go?

Welcome BigOrange7131!  We've got a good group on this thread with plenty of helpful tips.  Though we haven't sunk to the depths -- yet -- of dozens of posts on which gearing is best or the weirdness that is taper...we'll get there.  Last year at Lake Placid was my first IM too and this forum helped make it great.

For everyone -- Does anyone have experience with vertical jumps in their training?  I have been doing them onto a box that I built from plywood.  Most mornings I do three sets of 10 jumps before leaving for work. They are certainly hard for me -- and Patrick (lurking here somewhere since I know he is registered for IMLP) -- first brought them to my awareness last spring.  He swears by them to help build his power for climbing.  What is your take?  Is there a particular way I should incorporate them into training?  i.e. do dozens and dozens of them but only on run days, do a few each day, do them on non bike/run days etc.

I have been working with a personal trainer. I asked him specifically for exercises that would help me strengthen my legs for biking. We do a large range of exercises, but every session always has some sort of jumping in it to help build power in your legs.

Try doing some burpees.  These things are tough. It is kind of a full body exercise and you get the jump at the end to help build up your legs. I am always winded after doing these. Check out this video below.

To all those adding power by doing leg presses, squats, box jumps, and anything else.  Just remember you've got to run a marathon after (no duh jeff...) so you don't want these massively strong legs!  Do them, just not too many!

Good deal!

9 mile run this afternoon.  Legs felt pretty shot from hard riding the last couple days.  Only a swim tomorrow so it's almost a rest day for them.

Stupid question of the day.... I'm still in the early stage of navigating Trainer Road. Am I able to create my own workouts / could my coach log on to my account to create one and then I log on and do it?

Theres a beta version to create your own workout, look for a tab in the upper right side "Custom", click on that, then a new popup appears, where you click on create workout in the center.

It's pretty easy to create your own workout and it's based off of your ability to generate and sustain power.  The numbers on the left side of the chart are % of your power output, so when you select an interval and make it 70%, thats 70% effort to keep your power up to the graph at that interval - if you make it 100%, it's almost an All Out effort to keep your output there for that entire interval - it's amazing how it works, but it works really well.

You can cut and paste the link in an email of any workout and send it to your coach.

On the trainer? Not much happening here outdoors. We didn't get slammed by the snow, but it's extremely icy and windy. Already got a call from my training buddy who went running, she made it two blocks and fell twice before giving up. 12 miles on the treadmill, 1 hour trainer. Netflix, anyone?

I was just kidding. The roads are still closed in CT. We got slammed. About 28 inches at my house. 90 Minutes on the treadmill for me this morning. 2 hours on the trainer tomorrow morning.

Good Morning IM LP team Smile I need some information if you don't mind. I have volunteered for the race this year with the hopes of signing up for 2014 - can't wait btw but I have a question. I am coming to the race with a couple of friends but I have some other members in my tri club that are wondering what the demand for this race is and if they don't volunteer will they have a fighting chance to sign up on line for 2014 if they don't vol this year?

Thanks.

KC

I think registration was open for a few hours last year.  I don't think there was any issues if you were ready to go when online opened up.  I know in the past, it has filled up quicker....so who knows.

A crummy day for training in northern Illinois....COLD, COLD RAIN.  Luckily, my plan called for a long ride instead of a long run.  I went back-to-back long rides this weekend...so I got 4.5 of saddle time in between Saturday and Sunday.

Hope everyone in the NE is doing OK and staying warm!

Don't count the days...MAKE THE DAYS COUNT!!!

(but if you are counting the days...there's 167 to go!Laughing

What does 8 hours of shoveling translate to in bike miles?

I went show shoeing for a couple of hours in about 30 inches of snow. I counted that as an hour of cross training. I was probably in high Z2 and low Z3 most of the time. I wish I wore my heart rate monitor. It was a great leg workout.

5 hours with the shovel and snowblower yesterday, 2.5 hours shoveling off the roof this morning, my shoulders are killing me. 35" of snow and I'm crying like a baby! I want Spring NOW!! It's going to be weeks till these country roads are wide enough to run on again. I'm staying at the Best Western, so they say it's 8 miles from the start, where do you recommend friends and family stay - up to 35 miles away...

Like a couple others, lost my long run to 5 or 6 hours of snow shoveling.  I am still feeling it; we got around 30 in here.  Swim was lost to work; it's going to happen.  Three hour Trainer Road ride today (Cartago, highly recommend it for a ride that long), but am definitely feeling it now.

Hopefully everyone is warm, safe and healthy!

Howdy peeps ...

I've been laying low for about a week and missed all of last week's training due to this nasty cold that wants to keep hanging on. I was convinced, with the coughing that wouldn't break up, that I had gotten whooping cough, but the Dr. is pretty certain it's just a nasty virus that has been spreading.

I have contact with many college students each day and usually find it hard to avoid these particularly nasty bugs.

Anyway ... training resumes today with a post-work swim. Looking forward to being back in the groove again. I leave for a 5 day trip to Mexico next Wednesday, so the plan is going to be primarily running for those days. I'll get in as much swim/bike as I can ahead of that.
