Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Michael. You nailed it on the pain. My last half marathon was exactly the same. Got to the point where I was suffering but knew that I could handle it and did. The last three miles the suffering increased significantly but at that point it just became damage control and hang on. I occasionally think about doing a race just for fun where it doesn't hurt but then my competitive nature kicks in and off we go. I am trying to get my son to do a 5K with me. If I ran with him, I suspect it would be a pretty pain free, and totally awesome, experience. After all of my excitement with the tempo trainer in the pool yesterday I didn't do as well this morning. Just felt kind of sluggish in the pool and had trouble keeping up with the beeps while maintaining my form. I eventually slowed the tempo down, focused on good form for a little bit and then gradually increased the tempo. This is going to be a work in progress....... |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Comfortable pain-intersting concept. Michael put it well. With that said...not everyone experiences pain while racing. Its perfectly OK to do it for fun or socially as part of a group. We are all wired different. I'm afraid I'm like Jason and would have a hard time doing a race JUST for fun. For me, if registration for the next running race/triathlon was at the halway point of the run I would never do another race......at that point I just hurt too much and want to finish. Now, 20 seconds after crossing the finish line I can't wait to do another one! |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I would agree about the comfortable pain that it depends on your goals. My first HM, I ran as I'd trained, and had no overall time goal; I just wanted to finish with a consistent 10'/mile pace. I knew I could run this pace, and I wanted it to be about my conditioning. I ran it at that pace, and never hurt during the race. My last HM, I knew I was a better runner than when I did my first, so my goal was to lower my time. This meant that I was going to hurt some, but just enough that I could hold a faster pace, which I knew I could do because I'd trained for the event. In the same way, last May was my first triathlon, and I'm doing the same event this year. The first time, I was all about not going too hard or too fast, but this time around, I have a little better idea of how much harder I can push, or hurt, and still keep going. |

Extreme Veteran 356 Albany/Saratoga, NY area | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I was going to say that I'm not really racing, I often finish last and and still have a lot of pain at the end of an HM but the truth is I do try to beat my own times so I guess I am kind of racing-I just do it slowly for some reason. I agree about not signing up for my next race during the first race. I think about that a lot as I'm racing "if I had to agree to do another race right now I wouldn't" but as soon as I finish I can't wait to do it again. Even after my last HM when I felt terrible and threw up on the way home. I still was excited for the next race. There's something about being done running that completely changes your perspective. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Had a good swim at lunch. Main set called for 2X(10x100 on 1:45 +200easy). Felt good at the midpoint so did it as 20X100 on 1:45. That is certainly not "real swimmer" fast but its alot better than I ever thought I would be able to do. Keep at it folks...there are gains to be made! |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED For me, if I'm not feeling pain, I'm not working hard enough. I know I'm in comfortable pain when I fantasize about not moving anymore to stop it. When I'm thinking "it'd be really nice to put some ice on this body right now". I have a high tolerance for pain, so sometimes it takes something to go wrong for me to stop, like my calf making a funny snapping sound or feeling like my foot is separated from my ankle. Yesterday's 4 mile hill run was a fine example of comfortable pain. The calves felt like they were bathing in lava for the 1.6 miles up hill, but I knew it was just that lactic acid thing going on, so kept going. Now, if there were a sharp, concentrated pain, I would have eased off. Training yesterday was the run and swim team. Focus at swim was on kicks and we did some suicides. Butterflies up, 5 pushups, freestyle back, 10 crunches. That was pretty painful too. Holy smokes. Have a great evening! Edited by Blanda 2013-01-15 4:45 PM |

I'm a solid 2:00/100 so I guess I know where I should be training :D After 4 days in FL (and yep, I swam every day OUTSIDE) I'm back in the routine. Lap swims at the Y today and back on the bike tomorrow. My husband saw his ortho today who thinks he tore his acl AGAIN so my house is kind of stressed right now. Hey maybe this way I can finally get him in the pool with me?!
Congrats to the racers this past weekend! Keep up the good work team. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Randee-hope your hubby gets good news on the knee. Sounds like he has been down that road before. I tore my ACL in my right knee playing basketball about 20-22 years ago. Had the surgery where they open you up to do the repair. Have a 3 inch scar on the front of my knee and on the side. Back to the basketball court (I'm an idiot) and had to have it scoped a couple of years later. While I'm sure I have some arthritis in the knee it rarely bothers me and actually has felt better over the last few years now that I'm doing tris. Guess the swimming and biking help with maintaining flexibility and range of motion....well that and the fact that I don't play much basketball anymore Hope he gets back to the activities he enjoys! |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I guess we've got the makings of a torn ACL club going here. I also had one (with operation), alongside torn meniscus. I still have problems when it is cold outside, and the knee is permanently a little stiff and sometimes crunchy, but otherwise it seems fine. It was (another) crazy day at work for me today, but I managed a short run this evening. I'm headed to Arlington (VA) this weekend -- I finally got into an RRCA coaching certification course, which I've been trying to do for over a year because my childrens' school (very small -- <40 students in grades 1-6) wants to start a running club, but their insurance requires that the 'coach' be certified. So...RRCA it is, and finally we can get this thing going. |

Expert 866 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED 10 mile run this evening. Feels great to get it done. Even though it was my day "off" I had meetings until 830 pm. Something is wrong here. Swim tomorrow morning. Next year is going to be a big year for me as both my boys will be out west for college (San Diego and Utah). I'm free to move anywhere I want. I'm very fortunate that in my line of work (Hospitalist), there is demand all over the U.S. So where shall I go? I'm thinking someplace warm, with lots of good riding roads. I've lived in San Diego for 10 years, and this is high on my list. I want to be able to train outside, year round. So I'd love to ask anyone in the group, if you had the choice to relocate anywhere in the U.S., where would you go? I'm asking this from a triathlete point of view. Jim |

UTAH! or Colorado! or VT! So many good places to go. I think it's safe to say I vote for somewhere with lots of mountains! |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jim-have not been to San Diego but it sounds like it would be hard to beat....especially with your boys out there. I've lived in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia and its where I grew up....probably not a great place for training but right at the beach and 3 hours from the mountains. I love living on the Gulf Coast and I can train year round. Downside is that the 6 month Summers can be oppressively hot/humid. If you were looking for a beautiful place along the coast the area around Destin Florida has amazing beaches and solid places to train. I've spent a good bit of time in Chattanooga the last 4 years and it has a very vibrant outdoorsy population. I love it there as there are great trails, an active cycling community and a great downtown area. Temps get a bit cool in the Winter but rarely stay low for long. Rene was recently out in Boulder and had alot of good things to say about it. |

Regular 134 Wichita, KS | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I think Colorado would be perfect, too. For me it would be for the rock climbing but there are alot of triathlete advantages, too. The hills and altitude would help. I'm sure finding pools wouldn't be too hard in the winter. I was finally able to get in a swim today. The pool temp is finally warm enough to swim (74 degree). I tried out my new DeSoto wet suit today. It's really tight, especially the top half. Definitely makes breathing harder. In addition, my shoulders seemed to fatique earlier. I think I'll try to use the suit at least once/week to get good and used to it. |

I think you're all nuts. Flat flat flat -- Iowa or Kansas is the pick for me! Ran this morning (30 min) -- first "early morning" run in a very long time. Glad I did it -- but I felt it... for some reason, the treadmill seemed a lot faster than normal! |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I'll come visit when it's warm in CO!! Yesterday was nutty. I did sprints with the swim team. I swear, I always feel like I'm fighting with the water when I sprint, like punching it fighting. My arms are sore this morning. Some tempo stuff too. Hard pace for 200m is tough! About an hour after swim, my running group, all two of us last night, did rainbow runs. Up, over, then down the hill and repeat. 7 miles of that. Holy guacamole. My legs are pretty tight this morning too. I'm just a tight mess. Today I'm biking up Nimitz. 9 miles to the top and back, then tonight an easy 4 miles in the 'hood. I'm resting on my rest day tomorrow, for sure! Have a great evening. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Just finished a 6.4 mile run in about 28 degree weather, bit of a cool breeze, and it was already dark by 5:30 or so. I would say that SE Michigan is not the place to move for triathlon lifestyle. But, Jim, you already know that. Very cool that you have the opportunity to really go anywhere you want. Not many people can just pick up and move wherever they decide. |

Member 432 Calgary, AB | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED So -- I just added an event to my calendar -- late August, will be doing the Banff Granfondo -- 142 km (about 88 miles) cycling through the middle of the Canadian Rockies. http://banff.granfondocanada.com/ Last year's event was cut down to 100km due to bears My all-time PR for a single bike is 70 km, and that was back in college. Since then I haven't done more than 30 km. So I'm hoping this will get my cycling legs into action! Scott. |

So let's get specific. Manitou Springs just 15 minutes from Colorado Springs and about an hour from Denver. Spectacular is far too modest. My wife and I have talked about retiring there but I'm up for going now! |

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I didn't get out at all yesterday. I picked up a nasty ransomware on my computer. I was hours scrubbing the drives in safe mode until I could get my desktop back. Still having issues with some drivers but getting there. Today I went over to the PT to work out. 15 minutes on an eliptical followed by a 45 minute core training and finished up with a 1 mile run on the treadmill. I figure using the 10% rule I should be good by April to do the 5k end of the tri in much better shape than I did the one last week with no pratice. So far all you runners (and I think that's everyone in this group but me), what should I shoot for on my run with this background. 1. Ran the 5k in my tri last month @ 11:31/mile. I ran only 3 or 4 days in the six months leading up to the race due to injury. 2. On a treadmill I ran a mile in 10:50 today. I always do it at the end of my workout when I am warmed up real well. I walk on the treadmill for about five minute then run the mile and then a few minutes cool down. 3. I paln on increasing the distance each week by 10% which will get to the 5k mark three weeks before my late April Sprint. 4. I have three sprints a month apart in April-May-June. 5. I have an Oly in Nov. I would love to get to 10 Min/mile. When would be a good target to hit that? |

When your body is ready. I personally wouldn't try to put any time limits on running pace . Others in the group may feel differently about this. Your body will hit the paces that it needs to when it is ready to do so. Focus on training, building consistency and time and the paces will follow. Just my opinion. .. Focus on process goals not performance goals! Edited by Catwoman 2013-01-16 9:45 PM |
