The good news is that I get to leave work at 1pm. The bad news is the lawyer's office is in the middle of effing nowhere in Northbrook and it takes an hour to get there. I bet it would take less if you had your own car. |

Do you take a train, cab, zip car, bicycle Curious as if I move to a big enough city I might not want to deal with an automobile of my own. |

The only drawback to not having a car is that you have to go when the trains go and they don't get you to the front door. Yesterday we had a zipcar for an hour and a half, which cost about $15. If we go on a road trip we get a rental from hotwire.com for $15 a day, plus insurance and gas, but we only do that two or three times a year. We save at least $500 a month by not having a car between the payment, insurance, gas and parking, which is at least $150 a month in the city. Lots of my friends have cars though and they deal with it. I don't see the need for a car, usually. It's convenient to have, though. |

Parking nightmare, street sweeping, traffic hell, blech. I read an article a few years ago about the Pittsburgh parking melee. They built the stadiums then tried to use the parking revenues to pay for the stadiums and chased-away businesses who had trouble hiring people unless the business paid for parking then the business eventually relocated to the suburbs leaving limited revenue to pay for the stadiums. Austin just bought a bunch of those rent-a-bikes. Supposed to start that program real soon. They are also dropping their zoning rules that businesses have parking so people start using the public transportation more.

the parking disaster existed before they built the stadiums, and the parking by the stadiums was there in the days of three rivers...it's not just the cost but the HASSLE. there is no parking to be found in the residential areas! |

Parking in downtown Chicago is at least $35 a day for people who come to the city. If you get a monthly spot it's $150 minimum. You can get on-street parking but in our neighborhood there are no spots where you can leave your car all day. |

Parked it on the street for a few days at a time, then would have to move it, etc. Her car got stolen but she didn't realize it for 3 days! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not sure I could handle not having a vehicle to do things, but I am still in small town Iowa, where we have to drive 20+ miles to even get close to a bike trail, and a LOT more to find a decent restaurant. Been to Chicago once many years ago and stayed in a hotel for $170 a night and then they charged $25.00 each day to park there. We were thinking of staying longer, but didn't want to mortgage the house to stay much longer. |

Yes, where we were, we walked down the water front/Navy Pier/whatever it is called there. We were there for the King Tut exhibit quite a few years ago. I saw the original King Tut exhibit in New Orleans back in the late 70's as a kid, and this was not the same thing and a lot less of quality things compared to the original. I freaked out when I paid our monthly house payment in two day hotel stay and then had to spend $50.00 to park my truck. We walked by a nice grocery store that was in that area, so I could see the easy walk to get quality food where you live. I am sure everything else is easily within walking distance also as you said above. |

I try to avoid driving downtown when possible, but when we do, I just bite the bullet and know parking is going to be +/- $30. The bright side is that when we travel/drive in most other cities (NY excluded), I feel like I've won the lottery when I pay to leave the garage. I paid $3 in after parking for the day in Milwauke and felt like I was about to get caught doing something wrong . . . "act natural, don't make any sudden movements and drive away slowly." |
