You guys are so funny. Shawn, I also hope you don't get any sicker, and glad you're not a run down OR run down.

I'm still thinking about Will's running goals and mental training. I'm kind of stuck a few days back in this thread! Cough, cough, hack, hack ... but I am tremendously better and I'm so happy to be training again, even if it's ridiculously slowly and easily. Hey! I'm building my base

yanti-
in my life i have learned that with proper training and effort you can acheive your goals. if i want to be a stronger and faster runner-train to be a stronger and faster runner. i know with my partially f'ed up knee that will be a limiting factor, and i think thats one of the reasons why i may strive for a goal of time vs mileage. hopefully the increased mileage will not cause more damage to my knee. i am ready to go...and now if i can get rid of these lingering cold symptoms. my first foray into the pool should be saturday morning!!!! i do have the TI video(and i am willing to share it with everyone if they need a copy).
i am also think that i have found my first race-april 6 down in san diego 1000yd swim/40k bike/10k run.....i know it maybe over my head but i am mentally focused so anything is possible. have a great day i hope that you are doing great....train lots and enjoy some chocolate cake from time to time....

Spoke to soon about swimming and no injuries. Didn't swim this morning as I woke up with a huge muscle not in my leg. I am sure it will work itself out over the day and I can swim at night. Have a good day everyone. Anyone want to go to school for me for the next 10 weeks hahahah

You're missing a muscle?! That's frightening, Shawn. Reminds me of that old urban legend about the guy waking up in a bathtub full of ice and a missing kidney. Maybe someone stole it!

I have a tapering question, sort of. I'm messing around with my training plan today, since I just found out I'll be working Saturday shifts all through February, and I remembered that I never bothered to figure out how to work in the sprint tri I'm doing in the middle of my 16-week olympic training plan.

The sprint is on March 2, a month before my olympic. It falls at the end of a pretty high-intensity training week, which in one way works well because the week after the sprint calls for me to back off before building a little again. What I'm wondering is if I should worry about the fact that I won't be tapering for the sprint. I don't really care overly much about being competitive in the sprint -- mostly I just want to finish it and have fun, since I technically have never done a tri before (stupid oil spill...) -- so I was planning on just treating the race as a training day for my olympic.

With that in mind, my current plan calls for three bikes (2 1/2 hours, 2 hours and 1 1/2 hours), three runs (two 1 hour and one 45 minutes), and three swims (two 1 hour and one 45 minutes) the week before my sprint. But I'm afraid that might be really pushing it, even if I don't care too much about my time in the sprint.

What should I do? Knock off one day of training for each discipline? Do as much of the planned workout as I can but allow myself at least a day (or two?) to rest before the race? Or should I cut back a lot more that week? Or not worry about cutting back at all?

Right now I'm thinking of just cutting off the scheduled 1 1/2-hour bike (since it's the day before the sprint), which would give me two days of rest but wouldn't take much away from my oly training. Thoughts?

Howdy Erin! (SORRY Edited after posting!)

You don't need to taper too much for the sprint, especially since the point is to have a good practice race and just get in there and have fun. 2-3 days taper should be fine. Go ahead and do the 1.5 hour ride, but split it up into an EASY one-hour ride 2 days before, and then a VERY EASY 1/2 hour ride the day before.

Do the beginning-of-the-week workouts as usual, but take them down a notch or two.

Consider doing one of the swims as a VERY EASY recovery workout the day after the race.

Gwad, I keep forgetting to put important info in here (ain't the best day!) ... make sure to count each part of the race as one of the long workouts for the week. That should make taper planning a bit more apparent.

Thanks, Yanti!

Good to know I had the right idea. I like the idea of splitting up the bike, especially because I don't want to do *nothing* for a couple days before a race. And that way I still get the hours/miles in for my oly training. That's a great idea to use one of the swims as a recovery workout.

You're the best!

Hi everyone--sounds like just about everyone is starting to heal!  I didn't end up injuring my back so I am not on the injury list!  I am trying to force myself to leave my warm, cozy house with two sleeping kids in order to spend some quality time working out at the gym.  It seems soooo late but it's only just after 8--in the old days I'd go out to a bar at 11 PM to start the night.  Ah, age.  I didn't have someone waking me at 5 am back then!  Anyway, just saying hello and hoping to post some sort of workout in my blog in a while.  I can't stand the yellow squares lookin' at me!

My house is a total construction zone right now, but hopefully by Friday it's all done and Monday my kitchen will be finished up with the new stove etc so I can relax!!!  For now I am a wired tightwad of stress.  Thanks for listening!  See ya soon.

Hector! You're alive! It's so good to hear from you, and I wish you very much the same.

Leslie--I can only imagine the turmoil. You're probably also chronically sleep deprived, with two littl'uns. No doubt though you'll feel better once the house is put back together.

Heck ya, I am sleep deprived, but I really try not to let that be the main factor in deciding whether to work out or not, or I'd never work out!!  I did manage to hit the gym and ran on the treadmill until I was just too hot, then went to swim and the pool was packed (930 pm!) so I bagged that and took a steam. Dork that I am left my one and only swimsuit in the locker room so I need to go retrieve it tomorrow before it gets oogy.

WILL on half-mary/HIM running

wplummer - 2008-01-07 1:21 PM thanks yanti yes i want to be faster and have the endurance to finish the 13.1. right now is more building that stronger aerobic base, and committing to running four-five times a week. in my mind i know it may take me 3 hours to cover the 13.1 miles, but if i can get use to running for 1-2 hours straight then the 13.1 will be possible. i know my logic maybe flawed, so thanks for any insight.

Hi Will! Finally getting around to this! I'm quick, I know. I'm still not totally sure what you're asking, but lemme take a few stabs, and then you can fill in info/corrections/protests/questions/sobbing as needed.

Increasing your running volume (4-5x/week), all at a conversational pace for a while, will do incredible things for your endurance and speed. Again, just be super careful to build slowly.

It also seems like you're thinking about doing continuous running (as opposed to run/walk). I've actually given this a lot of thought for myself in the past few weeks. A lot of thought, and a lot of reading and research. Now, it's possible I may have been semi-permanently brainwashed through overexposure to Jeff Galloway, but I came to the conclusion that until I'm (at least, which may be never) 20 lbs lighter and sub-4 on a marathon, my best shot at getting faster, building endurance, and avoiding injury is the run/walk method.

Finally, follow a good HIM plan (I think you are--you just haven't put it in your log), and don't mess with it too much, especially in terms of adding more (either distance or intensity). Many HIM plans have you running 4x/week most weeks. (If you're doing a HIM, which I assumed from your first post. But the same goes for a half-mary, except there's even more running ).

SHAWN on kicking (swimming. not drugs.)

ShawnC13 - 2008-01-07 2:33 PM So I am not as slow a swimmer as I thought. It was my first time swimming in the morning before I headed off to school. I was in the slow and stoping lane I couldn't give the person in front of me enough room in the lane so that I wouldn't have to stop and wait for them. I got in the pool and things went great the first 100 was nice and smooth. I slowed my strokes down and was really trying to stretch them out. My question to our swim expert is I know as the distance increased that kicking will become more and more important but I find that I swim so much better with just my arms and very I mean very little kicking. Should I be doing more kicking drills or more of a stroke drill. It was so weird to have my swim go so much better by just using my arms.

Great article to check out: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=965

My personal experience? As Dr. SwimBeth pointed out (uh, I think she did) kick's important, and yeah, you should do kick drills. Hard to tell what you mean by "very little kicking" unless we see it ... I do very little kicking on long-distance, but you can still see a definite kick. What I also do in the last bit of a swim in a tri is that I kick in with a good kick--gets the blood flowing to my legs, ready for the run to transition, and I'm not as dizzy when I get out.

I went back to the doc again this morning and finally they are listening. They took some x-rays, said i was hosed up and gave me some antibiotics finally.

I got a nice surprise last night, my wife gave me an early anniversary gift, a cylce trainer.

It's great to see you back in the thread, Hector! And I'm glad to hear the docs are finally listening. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing something's wrong and not being able to find a doctor who cares and/or believes you. (When I injured my knee last year -- torn medial meniscus, I eventually learned -- my primary care doc first old me I should try running on the treadmill "to see how it feels." I could barely walk at the time. Nice.)

Don't you live where it's warm all year around??  Still, it's nice to have options, and that is a great gift!  Glad you are on your way to wellness now.  Don't forget to take your acidophilis!!!
