Morning (afternoon/evening/night) Manatees!

Didn't do my ride this morning. We had some flash flooding last evening which, in the desert, means the roads (especially the shoulder) will be covered in sand and debris for a few days. Will try to ride this afternoon when it's lighter, if it isn't raining again. The highway on which I do my normal morning ride was actually closed yesterday afternoon because of the severe flooding Surprised

I don't use Twitter, just following the blog.

Haha--OK, I think I can handle that

So Manatees here's a question for the day.  I have committed to trying a TT sometime in the near future, and I checked out my options last night and there's a 20 mile TT on Sunday night.

I was planning on doing a ~40mile ride that morning with a group, my first outdoor ride since my HIM last Sunday.  Weekends are really the only time I can hook up with a group to ride outside, and I've been trying to avoid riding by myself on our roads--little spooked.  If I miss this long ride, my next realistic option will be the following weekend, which is the weekend before my next race.

My question:

1) My next race is AGN and I have one more oly this season, 3 weeks after AGN (Hy-Vee 5150).  Would it be "better" for me to get a longer 40 mile ride in or would a 20 mile TT have a different but good training benefit considering my upcoming races?

40 miler. 20TT is too close off the HIM for meaningful results, and you'll only get better with more cycling behind you and a good recovery period for it.

Perfect.  Thanks Yanti  I need to change my sig line so that it just always says "Thanks Yanti"...

How do you expect the group ride to go? Will it just be cruising along easily or could there be attacks? I'd actually lean more towards the TT for the race sharpness given you're coming off a bigger event and going to a smaller one (AGN = Age Group Nationals). That is, unless you know that group ride will push you well at times, but not so much and so often that you'll break, it might actually be better.

Also be mindful of how your recovery is going. I did do a sprint tri the week after a big HIM and did well at it, setting a bike split record for the race and my highest power output to date. But I recover well for the bike, partly due to a high training volume. (So yeah, an expanded version of "it depends" for you Wink )

He's not enough reason, but Blake Shelton is hilarious! Very little of any importance ever happens on Twitter.

Yeah, the group ride is a complete crap shoot.  Totally depends on who shows up, but I would most definitely push harder on TT.  We usually have some attacks in our group rides, but it's a very touch-feely try not to drop anyone group, and that usually means I don't ride as hard as I would solo about 90% of the ride.

I may be able to line up a shorter group ride after the TT.  I could do the TT, planning on pushing, but knowing I won't do as well (probably) as I could well rested, then do another 20 or so with some climbing after that?  TT is almost totally flat, with expansion cracks every 25yds.

To date this season, I have 6 rides of 40 continuous miles or more--longest was the HIM.  I have 5, 30 + 30 with varying rest intervals between the 30s but all of rests being over an hour, and about the same number of just plain ol 30milers.

Most definitely. I always deal with patches of it but after those rains it will be so deep and constant that I likely would have had to go in to the traffic lanes and didn't want to deal with that in the pre-dawn sunlight.

Man, I hate that.  After the winters here, there is a long period I won't ride outside from all the sand.  I've seen that go wrong so, so fast.  Sorry lady :/

Janyne, I love the tree course avi. The bunch you posted on FB merely succeeded in cranking up TW and I for our trip to NC/SC/Ga this October.

Yanti - Your new avi succeeded in cranking me up.

Ok, that helps some. How do you feel about pushing yourself hard for 50ish minutes straight through? And ONLY look at doing that plus whatever warm-up/cool-down you need for the day. That will be plenty considering the effort will be high. It could actually be about as big of a training load as the 40 miler when all things are considered. If anyone has noticed the TSS values I put into my bike workouts, it comes from Intensity^2 x Duration, so how hard you go matters a lot.

If you're not sure of being able to push well for it and also then be well recovered within a couple days, then pass on it. Recover from the HIM, and then get in some harder workouts appropriate for the upcoming Olympics. When I see opportunities like you have, I try to give them a good look to see if it'll work, but only if I'm ready. Otherwise you can work yourself into a bit of a hole.

I hate it when weather interferes with training!  Could today be a run day instead of a bike day or is Fi feeling frisky?

I saw you question and then went to lunch.  Yanti said it better than I would have.  I'll just add some food for thought.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • * Are you fully recovered from your HIM?
  • * What is your A race?  I assume that you are going to race the TT and race the two Olys.  Or is the TT more of an event than a race? All of them can't be your top priority.

ETA:  Stoopid bullets don't work in this stoopid newly broken BT.

Happy Friday Eve Manatees!

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the new avvys that are floating around right now!

I was having the crappiest day yesterday and feeling quite out of sorts when out of the blue one of the lawyers I work with sent me a $50GC to Amazon to thank me for all the great work I've been doing.

You have NO idea how much this meant to me and pretty much made me tear up since I've worked with a lawyer before who would throw things at me (including a stapler), punch walls, punch cupboards, yell at me, yell at clients over the phone and even tried to argue with me that dog fighting is a legitimate sport.  I lost ANY AND ALL respect for the man after that one.  I found out a couple months ago that he's left the legal field completely and now manages a couple of MMA fighters.  Seems fitting, no?  Anyhoooo - the short version of the above is that I've never had the situation I'm in now, with someone actually appreciating the work I've done, and it almost brought me to tears - but in a good way.

Yeah, I'm definitely guilty of doing too much instead of being too conservative.  The hole?  I know it well.  The good new is I can wait until Sunday morning to see how I feel, then make the call.

Ben, I'm gonna go spend some serious time stalking your logs.  I have a feeling  I can learn a lot just by reading those and asking you some questions (I'll try not to become too much  (more of?) a nuisance:)

Isn't it amazing how much something like that can mean to you?  Good for her/him, and that is some strong work of yours Mon.  Nice:)

Dog fighting is a legitimate sport?  Ohhkay, well that qualifies him for D-bag of the year if he hadn't already one it with the stapler-throwing problem.  Jeez.

40 miler. 20TT is too close off the HIM for meaningful results, and you'll only get better with more cycling behind you and a good recovery period for it.

Perfect.  Thanks Yanti:)  I need to change my sig line so that it just always says "Thanks Yanti"...

I am most definitely not yet recovered from my HIM.  How long should that take anyway?  (Neck thing is a complication.)

The TT is just a thing to try--an event--but I'd go ballz out, fo sho.

The Oly in two weeks is most definitely my A race.  The one after that I will race  (because I don't have a do it for fun gear), but I don't have any expectations--my kids race the day before and I'm working the course for the pros in the afternoon.

I hate it when weather interferes with training!  Could today be a run day instead of a bike day or is Fi feeling frisky?

I'll see what the weather is doing when I get home. I'd rather ride if I can do it safely, otherwise I'll probably run.

Isn't it amazing how much something like that can mean to you?  Good for her/him, and that is some strong work of yours Mon.  Nice

Dog fighting is a legitimate sport?  Ohhkay, well that qualifies him for D-bag of the year if he hadn't already one it with the stapler-throwing problem.  Jeez.

Believe me, he was already d-bag of the year before that gem - but I think with that it put him in the running for "Co-Supreme Ruler of all D-Bags for Life"... along with Michael Vick.

There's still a TON to learn with this job (especially since I've never worked in patent prosecution before), but this really just solidified that I'm working at the right place.

Bento box to carry either when I train, but I may experiment with the single pocket in my tri suit (which came in last night) to see if it'll work better. I may try Twizzlers during an upcoming Saturday group ride, just for a change of pace. I have done Gummy Bears and Swedish fish on those rides, but I'm not sure how "Real" they are

I also love Hammer Gels, but they are faker then Pamela Anderson.

Ooooh, slammed Hammer Gels and a Canadian in one fell swoop!  Ouch!  Hammer seems to be the product my body will tolerate...apparently they are a slower digesting carb (maybe because they are fake??)

So DS2 is really enjoying the new (to him) bike (my old TT). While he was here I introduced him to Strava. That may not have been my wisest move considering my little speed demon of a son. (I did it so I could track his rides).

So anyway, yesterday he posts a ride that has a "dangerous" segment to it (so no leaderboard) and another section the KOM is doing 37mph!!!!!!!! On city streets in SoCal!!! Then DS2 text me that he crashed on the ride. He and the bike are fine but he titled the ride "Can't lean as far as the Kawi. Ouch". (refering to his Kawasaki)

What have I done...

Hey Hey Hey Manatees!  I finished watching the TDF last night... what an awesome race.  I was soooo totally rooting for Quintana to take 2nd.  What an awesome story.  Kid that grows up poor in a 3rd world country in his 1st tour, wins the "last" stage, wins KOM, wins best young rider and 2nd place overall.  Talk about a feel good story.  I guess I'm a bit of a sap.

Been reading and following along with the nutrition stuff.

Personally, I keep it pretty simple:

1 bottle of water for ever bottle of sports drink.

Powerbars - love the choices I have.  If I'm feeling fruity - no problem.  If I want a cookie - no problem.  If I want chocolate - no problem.

Besides the flavors - I like them because it's easy to track my calorie intake.

Oh yeah - almost forgot.  I ESCAPED MY SH*TTY JOB!!!  (Just got the offer today)

I start my new job on 8/12.  I can't wait.  I will make about 2 1/2 times what I make now - I work from home - set my own schedule and from what I've learned about this boss - he is way cool and not a micro manager.  I'm very excited.
