So I am trying to get myself and my friend motivated for the tri season next year.  We did our first tri together this year.  I went 1:30 and he went 2:00.  He rode his mountain bike and has since purchased a road bike, so he will shave a significant amount of time next year.  My idea is that nothing motivates us more than fear and humiliation (we are highschool friends and always rag on eachother).  With that in mind, I am proposing that we set a time difference, say 15 minutes.  If I beat him by more than 15 minutes I win and if I don't he wins.  The catch is that who ever loses has to wear this in the next race: http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=C0023

The idea is we would each buy the outfit now and having to look at the speedo every day over the off season and seeing it will help us stay motivated.  So what do you guys think?  Not sure if I can talk him into it, but I am trying.  Do you have any other ideas?

Apparently Capri's on men are really frowned upon in this crew.  GO WITH THAT?!

To all--- Off to the lake!  Have a great weekend!

I don't get it.  What is the humiliation factor here?  I mean, I just bought a similar mankini type outfit for my upcoming race...but with a different design of course.

seriously.  for 20 pounds i'll wear that!  and i'll buy it 2 size's to small.  and no manscaping!

yeah here's the best idea.  just go ahead and race.  the MG boys will decide what happens to the loser.  ha.  have that hanging over your head, that 5 years to Kona post on ST (awesome post btw) will be 1 year to Kona because you will not want to lose.

HAHA, I love the no manscaping comment.  As for my ST post.  I always wonder if I should just go long early and just enjoy it, or if I should build up over time and try to get as fast as I can.  We will just have to see how it works out over the next few years...

edit.  can you spell your last name out phonetically please.

It is pronounced (are-ns ) silent H,  but almost everyone says either (A-herns)  or ( erins) .   My maiden name was Hepler and it was always mispronounced as Helper.  I've learned to respond to most anything.

Ohhh Tracy. It is amazing you haven't got more of a "rise" out of the team than what I have seen so far.

I am going to defer my thoughts of this entire conversation.

I am finding that when I bilateral breathe my stroke is much longer and stronger.

Linda- I know you are the super swimmer in the group, but did you start out as a one sided breather or have you always bilaterally breathed?  *are those even words?  breather, breathed...  the reason I ask is because I am really trying to learn to breathe on my weak side and am getting better, but when I go to bilateral, I am running out of air after 50 yards.  I notice though that I can keep my elbows higher underwater when breathing bilaterally.

btw, with my long run tomorrow, I will top 100 miles of running for August.  My biggest running month in 9 years! Quite an achievement, especially with no (knock on wood) injuries!

Same thing happens to me on the bilateral breathing.....I am going to be working on it a lot over the Fall and winter.

Kim--nice job on the running.  You're in control of your body so I know you won't have any injuries.  You made it through the HIM, you can make it through this with flying colors.

I would say it is time to reflect on August and start staing Septemer goals.  Anyone?

Kim - way to go on that 100 miles!   I have a swim racing tomorrow.  We are broken into 2 groups, the men go out first with a 3 minute gap before the women.  So I have to make up 3 minutes on the old hubby and then hold him off.

I have discovered my first item I will be putting in my Special Needs bag at Beach 2 Battleship - SLIM JIMS!!!  They are the perfect running food - salty but with a strong flavor, compact, something solid to eat, all around great food!

And I hardly see where my answering to anything comment holds any water next to that race outfit!  WOW!!!  I don't know if I love it or am terrified, but I LMAO!!!

did my 3 hour ride this mornign but had to do it on the stationary at the gym due to the weather. Pretty mind numbing and not much fun at all.  Used a combintion of Infinit and Heed Endurance. Worked like a charm. Felt good coming off the bike and didn't need any solid food. Coming into the last two weeks of trainnig so it waon't be nearly as hectic.

A big thanks to everyone here. You have all been very supportive and I really appreciate the odd kick I needed to keep going.

Kim - awesome job on the running!!!  You rock!

As far as breathing goes, I typically bilateral breathe on distance swims, but not on sprints.  I do have a "more comfortable side", but I try to keep the breathing to every three strokes since I find my stroke is much better when do I bilateral breathe.

Way to go Kim.   Great running for the month. 100 miles is awesome.

I agree with Linda on her comment about bilateral breathing. It makes for a smoother, longer stroke. I breathe every third stroke. Bilateral breathing helps me keep my body rolling from side to side better as you are forced to roll further when you have to breathe off each side. This in effect keeps my technique better. Cutting through the water on your side is much more efficient than going ahead with your chest flat and breaking the water. Kind of like standing in the wind. If you are head on into a strong wind it is harder to stand than if you turn sidewise. THis is also true in the water as you are pushing through it. I also find that it allows me to see where other people are in case I have to go around some.  I was not always a bilateral breather and it was difficult to get the technique down. With perseverence you will get it and it will become a very natural way for you to swim.

I was just thinking about the seat issues Tracy had been talking about and while I don't experience the same thing exactly the boys do get tender once in a while. What I started to do was take an old pair of tri shorts.( you know the ones that have faded to see through ) and put my bike shorts over top. That gives an extra bit of padding in the right spots. I save on the wear and tear of my good expensive bike shorts by buying a pair of "training" shorts. What this is is a pair the can be worn under any shorts to make them into biking shorts. Kind of like a liner. They are full shorts but thin material and could be a bit see through themselves. I don't know as I have never worn them by themselves. Mine are all black so I can just throw them over my old tri shorts and they look fine. I was able to pick up a pair at the LBS for about $25.  Never had any problems or tenderness since I started doing that. In race you can put your cycling shorts on after the swim  and peel them off for the run.

Sweet!  Check out these two threads at the top when you get a chance.  Lots of talk right now on the Louisville thread.  Artemis has a spread sheet up with goals, times, etc.  Kinda cool to follow the banter.

A good friend is racing up at IMC today, shes not on BT.  I left on my run an 9 CST when she hit the water.  Cool feeling out there running knowing what she's doing.
