Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Did a 25 mile bike 6.2 mile run brick today. That lil bike ride does take the spring out of your step doesn't it? That was my last nasty brick prior to next week's race. The bike has new tires, tuned up the cables etc., think I should be gtg. Man it is going to suck going from being able to swim miles on the lake back to a 12 yard pool again! And and, back to work too the worst part of vacations... they end. Hope everyone is rocking their workouts and preping for their peak summer races 8). |

You really are an inspiration to athletes all over not just htis sport. Congratulations. Take care of yourself now. R&R time. And to Steve. very short laps in a 12yd pool. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hello all. I'm back from a fabulous week at the Outer Banks. (that's the beaches of North Carolina) Didn't get in as much training as I would have liked, but I made the few I got count. But first things first, MARK HOW AWESOME!!! THEY ARE SOOOO CUTE!!!! MANY WARM WISHES TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!!! Steve, congrats on your race, but what happened to, "I'm going to taking it easy and not push it so hard." I hope everything clears up with your chest condition, not only for the Ironman, but for your health overall. How scary!! Training at the beach has advantages and disadvantages. I was able to do a long, fast run (for me) but the wind is difficult for biking. The rip currents were really strong and the beaches were Red flagged most of the time, so no OWSing for me. But yesterday I did my first 50lap swim in my gym pool. Cool! I have decided that I prefer indoor pools for this reason; around lap 40 Mr Coppertone entered the water next to me and that was all I could taste for the remainder of my swim. I think he forgot the 20minutes absorption rule when applying suntan lotion. 47 DAYS UNTIL MY OLYMPIC, BUT WHOSE NERVOUS?!?!?! I had a friend racing the Lake Placid Ironman yesterday and saw the finishline on a live feed over the internet. Very cool. Steve and Igo, you'll have to give us your race numbers so we can watch you guys finish. Hopefully your race will be better, it was 60degrees and raining in Lake Placid. Yuck! Glad to be back with you guys (work I could leave anyday) I missed everyone. |

Now if I could get my running under control I might actually finish my olympic and not puke! |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Very nice Steve but make sure you take care of yourself. Tracy are you doing a good running plan? My running has gotten so much better with one. It includes tempo runs, speed work and endurance runs. I have been amazed at how much faster I have gotten just in the last few months. I have tri # 3 coming up this weekend, it should be pretty easy 300M pool, 12mi bike and 5k. Planning on seeing how hard I can push myself in that one. Tri #4 is the following weekend, I mainly signed up to see how I do at OWS it has a 750M OWS in a lake, should be interesting. I went camping this weekend to get some OWS practice in and man was it difficult. there were some decent waves on the lake from all the boat traffic which kept pushing me further off course. Whenver I tried to sight I switched to breast stroke and it just tired me out alot quicker going back and forth, plus looking into the sun with my goggles was impossible even when I tried to sight. Getting a bit nervous about that OWS in 2 weeks, going to hit the pool as much as possible to work on some kind of sighting method... |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Tony You might try this. When you are going to site on your swim try taking only a half stroke but double up on that side. eg. left, right, left half stroke, left again then go back to right, left, etc. On your half stroke you can take an extra breath. The way I do the half storke is when I come over on the arm swing I drop my hand in at the shoulder and stroke back from there without reaching forward. It feels weird to do that at first but it does accomplish the siting and additionaly gives you an extra breath if you need it. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Tony, no I haven't really been following any type of running plan. I am loosely following a Sprint to Olympic plan, but it is difficult with the kids. Usually when I go running, it is just the time I can steal away, and so I am running in my neighborhood. The problem with that is I live at the bottom of a series of hills in every direction, so I feel that by the time I have spent the first mile and a half getting out of the first set of hills, I'm focusing on picking up the pace and lenthening my stride back out. After that it is back down hill again to head home. This past week at the beach I was able to do 5.5miles with around a 10min/mile pace. For me that is really good for I am closer to the 12min/mile pace at home. But doesn't that reenforce (sp?) the idea that you need flat stretches for training drills to be effective? |

I am doing the Sprint -> Olympic plan also. It has a nice mix of runs. I do all my speed work at a local HS on their track and some of my tempo work there and some on the street, and all my endurance runs on the street. I feel your pain about the hills, that is all my neighborhood is so sometimes I drive out a bit to start my runs. Also race pace is alot different than training pace. I run my endurance runs anywhere from 10 - 12/min miles, those are to just get your body used to going that distance, where the speed runs and tempo runs get your body used to going faster. I personally like the runs where say you run 5 miles and take 10 - 20 times in that 5 miles to run either at LT or a fast 5k pace for 30 seconds. That drill just seems to get me really used to running faster. It does take time though. It helps my wife is training for a marathon so she is really into her running times and has been helping me figure out what my training runs are supposed to be doing. |

Maybe for a couple of your runs you could just drive out beyond the hills and start from there. Not as convenient, but I know when I was in AZ and it was nothing but hills in every direction from our condo, I didn't feel like my runs were as quality. No chance to really warm up, just right into the hills and the rest of the run was trying to recover from the shock. I have the opposite problem at home, I have to run over three miles to get to anything more than a glorified false flat. |
