I ran 13 miles on Saturday and followed it up with 90 miles on Sunday. A portion of the bike ride was an IMAZ loop. The Beeline and McKellips have recently been repaved. So it will be a nice smooth surface on race day.

The weather was just about perfect with highs in the mid 80s. There were some winds on the Beeline but they were not too bad.

one disadvantage for us out of towners is not being able to ride the course, so your input is welcomed! thanks for letting us know what the landscape looks like.

I'm going to pre-ride the course this weekend as part of an organized ride/run. I dont live that far away but have never been out on my bike on the IM course. I've swam in that lake plenty and ran loops during races, so it's kind of familiar

Weather has been super here. Wind has died down a bit but it's to be near record heat this weekend

My long workout for the weekend was a 5hr bike/20 min run brick.  Overall the bike went well, except for a few maintenance problems.  It was the first time that I had tried taping Gu to my top tube and I ended up having them a little to the side which scraped up my leg.  Major problem though was at hour 2 when my seat came loose!  I had to stop at a pep boys auto garage and ask if I could use an allen wrench.  I had the nose of the saddle way too high for the next three hours; not cool.

It just hit me...  6 weeks...  are you kidding?...   I better start riding my bike...

I haven't been active in this forum.  You guys look solid.

Hope to meet some of you at the race,  and please wait for me at the finish line.   I will probably need someone to carry me to the med tent..

Cheers

In other fun news, I've been offered a pair of Zipps for the race, but I'm not sure if I should take them. Any thoughts on how Zipp's will impact time overall? no idea if they're tubulars or clinchers at this point.

What depth are the wheels.  If they are 404's then I would say you might want to use them.  Anything deeper I might hesitate.  Can you ride them before the race?

I have a decent training week behind me - slightly lighter hours than the week before and than this week, which will be my biggest in training, the wonderful overdistance week. 120 miles to ride on Thursday and our first big winter storm is blowing in tonight, so I just hope it's dry and not overly gusty for Thursday. Also will be doing my longest run of all on Sunday - since my friend is coming to town for the Nike Women's Marathon, I will drop her at the start line and go do my run while she is racing, then meet her at the finish line!

What I do, on long courses (half and full Irons), instead of putting my nutrition on my bike where bad things like what happened to yourleg can happen, I put all my nutrition in the back pockets of a bike jersey, along with an extra CO2 and a tube.  In T1, I throw the jersey on over my tri suit.  It takes maybe 10 seconds to put on the jersey, so very little time wasted.  I have plenty of pockets for nutrition, and the jersey helps keep the sun off my upper arms and back of my neck, to help reduce the chance of sunburn.

Just some advice, it's what works well for me, it may or may not work for you

I highly recommend the De Soto tri shorts with the 4 pockets.  Nice and tight but pockets are a decent size unlike the TYR shorts.  Works great for running if you don't like your stuff flopping around in the back of your jersey.

this is something i discussed with the desoto rep on slowtwitch forums. i want the closest thing to the 400 mile pad in trishorts with pockets but not that thick. he said to try the desoto forza rivieras 2010. problem is 1. no pockets and 2. no size xl. so im thinking of using tri shorts under the wetsuit, changing to 400 mile for the ride, then changing again.

If you're swapping bottoms at T1, why not just wear your normal swim wear under your wetsuit?

I haven't decided my swim/T1 plan yet. Going to wear the Desoto 400's for the bike and the Desoto's forza's for the run. Considering wearing the 400's during the swim also to eliminate one change. Gonna have to take them for a test swim soon.

Yes you can derobe in both T1 and T2.  They have male and female changing tents and there is plenty of nudity going on.  Don't worry about it, just decide what is going to be the most comfortable for each leg (ie whatever you have trained in)and change into it.  Unless you are in the hunt for a Kona spot it seems to me that the extra 60 seconds it could take to change is going to be easily returned in comfort.

My next bike ride I may try some cycling shorts... Man, did my butt hurt after the 7 hrs this past Saturday.. I already have (2) saddle sores so I guess it wouldn't hurt... literally!  After trying 3-4 different tri shorts I am bummed that Zoot changed to a roll stitch for their tri shorts that make the ones I bought unwearable.... Oh well, it was only $48.. If the next few weeks help with cycling shorts, I will use them.  I have (2) pairs of "Scott Tinley", yes, I said Scott Tinley, cycling shorts, circa 1980 that I want to wear one of during the run...  Just for the nostalgia..  They would NEVER last for the bike ride...

Everyone hang in there and keep fighting...

Lori - bike shorts aren't evil!  You don't have to wear tri shorts just because it's a tri!   How about some bike shorts and some chamois cream?

I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to wear. I was thinking tri shorts and a sports bra on the swim un the wetsuit, throw on a bike jersey in T1 then swap it out for a tri top in T2. Still looking for a tri top that has pockets that will hold what I need. Ideas?

Dave,

That was funny... If I get the video, DZ-NUTS helps with "saddle soreness"...  Does it also numb the nether region? It's not that I won't wear cycling shorts, it's just that I haven't been training in them at all... But I think at this point I have no choice...

PS: Nice tan line and you are hot!!!

Lori

No, no, that was Dave ZABRISKIE, not me!  I WISH I could TT like him!  He's a pro rider for Garmin-Slipstream, and he's hilarious.

I actually haven't used his product.  I use Assos because I got it free from work.  Mainly, it just allows... parts... to slip frictionless past one another while riding.  Fantastic, especially three hours into the ride when you'd normally be pulling shorts out of your arse.

Assos bibs rock, but quite expensive. I use them on all long rides. Desotos are very nice (400 mile ones) and have a thich pad that is supposed to be non-absorbent,

you should hit the ironman training or gear reviews boards for some reviews.

After multiple attempts with different Tri shorts, I finally decided to wear my tri shorts under a set of Sugoi bike shorts. It worked beautifully last weekend. I was able to go 120 miles (just under 7 hours) and no problem in the saddle. I think for IMAZ I will swim in my tri stuff, put the bike shorts on over the tri shorts for the bike and run in the tri shorts. I'm not planning on breaking any records, just finishing so I don't really care how long it takes and I'm not worried about spending the extra time in transition. I find the double layers also kept me relatively warm on the bike as the morning started out rather chilly. Just a thought...

That's my plan as well (though I may put on my favorite run shorts for the marathon). I've been biking with tri and bike shorts on for weeks now and it's the most comfortable thing for me.

You're also a heck of a lot faster My only full clothing change will be shorts from bike to run, but I'm gonna be out there long enough that day, I might as well be comfortable.
