Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN!
I need help figuring out something for my swims... flip turns.

I can do them without going the wrong way or what not, but my real problem is getting water in my nose.

Quick history:  I had this same problem last year when I was learning to swim.  Every time I put my face in the water, water went up my nose.  I had to learn how to breath.  So I know I can learn how to breath right doing flip turns, but I need more instruction.

There are only 2 articles on this site (I didn't search the forums) that cover flip turns.  They both just say to exhale while executing the flip.  Ok, tried that, it didn't work.  I'm not sure if the force of the flip is causing the water to just go up there and hang out in my nose or if I'm just plain not doing something right.

Am I overlooking the obvious that I just need to practice them more, or is there some types of drills that I can practice to work on the breathing aspect??

When you do the turn do you exhale out your nose?  That seems like it would prevent water from getting in there.  That's what I do when I attempt them (poorly)

Hey Tony, if in your race report if I do read something like this "Pushed so hard , that I threw up in the bushes after the run", I will be disappointed. You promised!!

Jeremy I will have never noticed, but I will try and pay attention on Monday.  I think I usually exhale as a kick off the wall.  I usually breath (2 strokes before) come in, flip, kick off the wall (belly still in the air), exhaling from my nose, twist over, breath, swim?!

I think?!  Here is a video of what I "TRY" and duplicate.

you mean if you don't see that you will be disappointed?

I did say my goal was to be right below that point.

I do have a serious problem pushing myself in races.  I end up having way too much left in the tank at races, always very worried that I am not going to be able to finish for some reason, so I save up reserves that I never need.

My fit update.  Fitter called me back yesterday evening and asked me to come back in because he wanted to try something else to get my stack # down.  Went back in at 1030 this morning and he didnt make it.  Not sure why yet but hopefully he is ok and nuthing bad happeend to him.

I pm'd a BT bike guru abt this last night.  His reply indicated that there was a "HUGE disparity" in my numbers and too that he roughly size and lots of bikes fit him.   Most importantly he indicated that a good FIST fitter should be able to look at my Fit Worksheet and with my inseam should be able to tell if the stack and reach numbers are in the ballpark.  He isnt a FIST fitter.

So SWBKRUN freinds.... any of you got a FIST fitter that might talk to me for a few minutes.  I know most of us are newbies but I had to ask.

Hey.... good news is I get to use these breathing techniques that I learned way back in our first prenancy class to remain calm...

Holy Carp. I go away for a day day and it takes me an hour to catch up on all the posts and then can't remember half of what I read. Is there a full moon today?

1) Suzy: great pictures. I think they all are grea and you don't look like your going to pass out which is usually how i look after I run a mile or so. I have a very good photogenic quality for the radio. Oh I was just wondering are you tall enough to ride the adult rides (i know I'm gonna pay for that)

2) Jeremy: If you want water up your nose just breath in when you flifp turn. Really though I think Steve is about right on the turns. Go into your dive to turn, once you start to push off the wall exhale through your nose until you are back into your noraml stroke pattern. I don't use the flip turn very much but don't have a problem with it when I do.

3)Trevor: I find it very hard to believe that you are ever at a loss for words

OK Good Luck to every one racing this weekend and everyone have a great weekedn even if your not racing. Only about 10 days until I head to Cuba for a vacation. I'm not sure what I need a vacation from but my wife needs one for sure.

As long as I agree to sit on my husband's lap I can get on the rides, sometimes for free!  Only a guy going to Cuba would pull a short joke on a nearly 46 year old woman!   Tomorrows my birthday....presents accepted.

Sorry I've been MIA.  Kids are tracked out (our school follows a year round schedule).  I have my hands full with the 3 of them 24/7 and getting my workouts in.

It's going to take a few days to get caught up with everyone!  I love the activity & pace of this group.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RACING THIS WEEKEND!  HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Aw, Suzy!  I knew you and I could've been twins!  But you'd be the faster twin.  My bday is tomorrow too!  So HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!!!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.  It's hard for me to keep up with all of these posts!

Matt, you made me laugh.  You know what you wrote, so I'll leave that there.

Update on the sighting, I'm trying it in the pool every fourth length, every 4 or 5 strokes and it is getting easier to do.  Thanks for the suggestions, we'll see if it translates to open water next time.
