Wanna trade?  My run this morning was done in -3 F temperatures.

How's the asthma holding up in that temp!

rizer22 - 2012-01-03 8:28 PM 1 hour on the trainer tonight. Not too fast. Under 17mph but kept avg HR at 136. Also got in 30 mins of ST at the gym today followed by a 20 min "jog". Started reading "Iron War" on the trainer tonight. Story of Dave Scott and Mark Allen in the 1989 Ironman Championships. Only about 10% ton. Tough to keep the kindle steady on the trainer. But I made it work.

My average heartrate was 125 for 20 mph this morning.  It's always so low on the trainer and then the second I'm out on actual roads, it hits the roof.  Can't quite figure that one out.

Let me know what your opinion is of Iron War once you finish it.  I read You are an Ironman and thought it sucked.  Moved on to I'm Here to Win, and I'm actually interested in what Chris has to say.  He sure loves himself though.  LOL

How did you determine that you were going 20 mph?

speed/cadence monitor

What kind (brand) of trainer are you on?

Cycleops Mag Trainer.....I increased resistance this morning, too.

Ok -- there's a technical reason but if I try to explain it I'm going to mess it up -- I'm going to ask Shaun to explain the trainer issue.

Also -- as a random side note make sure your tires are pumped as well -- it can effect how the resitance feels on the trainer.

First off, Kel is correct about pumping your tires before you ride the trainer.  When your tire is softer against the drum, it tends to slip.  Think of how a tire slips through a greasy spot.  It won't necessarily make a squeaking noise but the wheel will be turning faster than the trainer so your bike computer's speed will think it is at "X" when the output resistance of the magnets in the trainer will be far lower.

Also, mag trainers are known to provide lower-than-road power output.  You may be going 20mph on a magnetic trainer, which corresponds to an output of ~200W.  On the road, that same 200W actually corresponds closer to 16mph or 17mph.

I'm not saying the mag trainer should be replaced but just keep in your mind that you are not likely pushing as hard on the trainer as you would be for the same speed on the road.

Bottom line is, Fluid trainer is going to reflect a road ride the closest?  That makes sense now!  Although, my HR still seems to be higher, not by much, outdoors, simply due to hills.

And Kelly has offered your free bike fitting services if and when I make the trip to Southington.  I have plans to meet up with Brian at Fast Splits, a few weeks post surgery.  Booooooo to surgery!!!

Thank you for the feedback, Shaun.  I know the speed on the mag trainer doesn't equal the speed on the roads, as all those easy rides last winter on the trainer did nothing to prepare me for road riding.  I seemed to be pushing more and getting my heartrate much higher when I was doing Jorge's program, so perhaps I ought to do 1-2 days of that a week again.  Anyway, I can't afford a fluid trainer right now, so the mag will have to do.  I'll be sure to check tire pressure next time I hop on.  Thanks again, Kelly and Shaun!

Another thing to consider on road vs trainer is that no matter how "smooth" you are riding on the road, you're still using a bit more upper body than just spinning at home. I'd imagine that's got to add a few bpm to hr.

Interesting discussion about trainer speed - I have a different trainer than most people (the 1UP) and a rear wheel speed/cadence censor and I find that it is pretty close to my speed on the road. I think maybe because my particular trainer has a bigger drum and you press the drum lightly into the wheel and tighten it down slightly. I don't worry too much since I tend not to focus on speed too much on the trainer but I do record it.

calimavs - 2012-01-04 1:54 PM Good morning! Took a rest day yesterday, plan on getting on the trainer tonight. Work is nuts so I haven't been around much. I feel like I'm finally back in my training groove but still trying to figure out my game plan for this year.

Good intro for this -- am interesting article on planning a season:

http://lavamagazine.com/training/qt2-dec-extra/#axzz1iWNpLDOZ

Interesting article, thanks for sharing! I'm in a weird spot, the biggest thing keeping me from putting together a full schedule for the year is that fact that I'm hoping to get pregnant at some point this year.

I have no idea how long it's going to take so I don't want to sign up for races and then not get to do them depending on how I feel down the road. So right now I'm sort of in a no-mans land, able to train as much as I want but no races to focus on. I'm someone who trains to race and likes having a structured plan with an end-date, so it's been a struggle.

I'm starting to land on focusing on the swim and the run for the year - I don't love biking as much as I love swimming and running, and they are both things I can keep up with if/when I get pregnant. I found a new master's team I'm considering joining that's a lot more hardcore than my old one so that should be fun. I'm so type A, I guess I just have to give into the uncertainty a bit!

Are you riding hard on the trainer?  Also, there are no hills indoors.

True about the hills, which are all over around here.  No, I was not riding hard this morning.  You guys told me not to do Jorge's program.

I didnt say that... I just said it was a hard program. If you soft pedal your HR shouldn't be too high, right? Ride harder and your HR will go up: do a 10 minute warm up, followed by 5x 2:3 set 90 rpm cadence in lg15. Soft pedal for rest interval. I guarantee you that your HR will be up.

Kids are a major drain on training and money. They are really not tri friendly. Although sitting here with my eigh year old watching good luck Charlie is very sweet.

I go back and forth thinking that too all the time ... I just keep telling myself I am doing a 5k, ALOT of them!  If I think about the actual mileage, I get freaked out.

The medals and hopefully the experience were just too good to pass up

You just need to make sure the tires are pumped, make sure you have enough resistance and keep your cadence up.  You really need to do the work get your HR up and then use HR to govern the ride.  It can be harder to get your HR up on a trainer but it can be done.

With both swimming and running you should have no issue continuing throughout your pregnancy.  Why don't you pick a marathon to train for.  If your not pregnant you can go for a PR, if you are pregnant you can go out there and enjoy the day (or you can be like the woman at the Chicago marathon who delivered her baby 4 hours after finishing the marathon).

You know I wish the weather here would make up it's mind if it's going to be cold or not.  Go to run yesterday and it's cold, go to head to the gym today and I have to strip off a sweatshirt before I get to the car.  Anyway 1600 in the pool of intervals and weights.  Will hit the trainer for an hour at lunch later.  Almost rid of my holiday weight.  Goal is mid 150s by the end of April.

I would love to be at race weight for IMTX (about 148 lbs).  Not sure if I'm capable of doing it.

More swim and run volume, less long rides in Zone 1, and some weekly calorie restricted training. How many times do I have to tell you this!

sounds like it's time for anaerobic intervals on an empty stomach!!!!!!  MY favorite!!!!

Nothing like an hour/hour and half of intervals at 5am!!!

How did you come up with the number 148?  Just curious.

Another good trick is to cut out the sport drink and just use water and a gel on rides.

You just need to make sure the tires are pumped, make sure you have enough resistance and keep your cadence up.  You really need to do the work get your HR up and then use HR to govern the ride.  It can be harder to get your HR up on a trainer but it can be done.

You're right - I need to get the heartrate up to where it needs to be and keep it in that range (no matter the speed).  Thanks again!
