![]() Good morning everyone! I added in the race info from the next wave of subsequent posts. If anyone wants more specific race info in there, just let me know and I'll try to update accordingly as I catch them...sometimes, I am a few days between getting on here, so be patient with me. And, you silly gooses...you are welcome. Truly, it was no big deal and it made my OCD self very happy to do it! Jason, I've never heard of CHI running - but I'll sure look into it. Whatever works. I did order a pair of Hokas (which I'd also never heard of) per the discussions here. Hoping they'll be here by my long run this weekend. I'm psyched to try them! I was diagnosed in 2004 - I've got arthritis in my knees and was, at that time, bone on bone. The doctor basically said nothing would work for me except a knee replacement and that I should fend that off as long as I could stand it to give the technology a chance to develop as much as possible (at that time, you could not run on an artificial knee...not sure about now.) He also said to take up biking...no more running...ever. Oh, and to stay as "light" as possible. (I promptly gained 50 lbs.) I've been tolerating the running training for the half ok; but, I jumped into the training for the full, probably too quickly and my left knee is now putting on a big protest. It is very swollen and on the bike, it pops/clicks with every downstroke. It doesn't hurt when it clicks, but it is disconcerting. On the runs, it doesn't feel worse than the usual moderate pain. I've made another appt with an ortho guy...a different one. Maybe he'll be more helpful to come up with solutions to keep me in the game. Anyway, thanks for the Chi suggestion...I'll try it for sure.
Steve - that is really funny about the Folsom photo...it was fate, I guess! Nice pic too! Re: bike maintenance - HIGHLY recommend watching those utube videos on tire changing and chain cleaning!!!! (And, then practice...) I had my first flat after picking up a nail some idiot threw on the road (took out about 20 of us). Certainly, I had planned for such a catastrophy...(Rely on the kindness of strangers when I break into sobs on the roadside...) However, with 19 others who went flat before me, there weren't too many available helpers. I lost 45 minutes. Suffice it to say, I vowed never to have that happen again. I can now change my own tire! Oh, and that swim set was a great idea, thank you! I don't know if I can do 4000 yet, but I'll do it for 3000. Should be good! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning Gang! The highlight of today's master's class as a 500m timed swim for lane placement. I haven't swam 500m straight since IM last September! Got it done and it's a starting point for me. I remain excited about making progress in the class vs getting all knotted up over a very slow time. Positive news. Came home and did my Tempo run just for fun! Erika--I love your enthusiasm. The folks at Fleet Feet suggested looking into the Hokas when they get them in. i'll be curious what you think. I'm skeptical they will work for me. I am really only looking for a new shoe because Saucony changed the one I love. The HOKAs supposedly have a big toe box. The silhouette seems very odd to me although I know there are converts in the group. I did try Chi Running many years ago when I kept getting injured. If there is a class to learn it, I would recommend that route. I made the mistake of attempting it on a long run and was so sore shin on down the next day I could barely walk. I obviously wasn't doing it correctly! |

I did it yesterday (just a short 30 min each) and I was pretty done on the run and wiped out the rest of the day. Like Jason, I'd rather spread them out.. Interestingly, I have a Tri this summer that is Swim-Run-Bike. I am quite curious how it will go. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Erika, I think you should at least look in to Chi running to see what it is all about (Pose and Natural running are versions of the same thing). It isn't complicated. It is essentially this: Stand tall. You want to tuck your butt in (so it isn't sticking out behind you) and stand up, making a straight line from your ankles through your hips and up through your shoulders and the top of your head. Lean forward from your ankles (not your waist). As you fall forward, swing one of your legs forward to prevent you from falling on your face. The next part is all caps because it is the most important part of all. WHEN YOU PUT YOUR FOOT DOWN TO PREVENT YOU FROM FALLING, LAND YOUR FOOT DIRECTLY UNDER YOUR CENTER OF GRAVITY, NOT OUT IN FRONT OF YOU! Sorry to shout but this is critically important ![]() Keep falling forward and swing your other foot out to catch you, again, under your center of gravity. Repeat over and over and you are running. I first did this on a treadmill and it worked really well for me. Not sure if that makes any difference. Some people will emphasize landing on your mid foot instead of your heel. I think what part of your foot you land on is much less important than making sure that you land under your center of gravity! You want your strides to be short and quick. Do not over stride by swinging your leg out in front of you. By landing under you instead of out in front your strides almost have to shorten up. When I am running I will sometimes think, "tap-tap-tap-tap" to myself to remind me to be light on my feet and only have them tap on the ground instead of thudding in to the ground. If you think about it, if you land with your leg extended out in front of you with your knee straight, all of the forces of landing are transmitted axially straight up your leg and through your knee. By landing under your center of gravity, much of that force is actually changed in to the horizontal plane and not up your leg. It really works! I have been bone on bone since a menisectomy done in 1996. I gave up running for several years until I read about Chi running and it made sense. It took me about six months (maybe longer) of constantly working on it to make it my default running form. I have run 1000s of miles in the last several years with NO knee issues. An x ray done a couple years ago on my knee showed some narrowing of the joint space (as would be expected with no cartilage in there) but no real arthritic changes. I will warn you that Chi running transmits a lot of the forces of running to your calves, ankles and feet. They will be (very) sore if you decide to run this way. It will take a while (more than a month, maybe more than three months) to adjust. It was definitely worth it to me to power through, carefully. It may not work for everybody but I am a fan. Interestingly, I was faster the very first time I ran this way. It wasn't natural for me but it was faster and seemed to use less energy. Happy to answer questions. Sorry if I was too over the top in my praises ![]() |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had my physio appt this afternoon, and I have to admit, I think I am a masochist! The good news, no indications of any tendon/ligament tears, and he found lots and lots of areas where the muscle fibers weren't aligned properly (pretty much an entire band around my left quadricep) and some areas where the fascia wasn't 'sticking' to the muscle (those are my non scientific terms). He rubbed lots of gristle with this god awful (but so beautifully painful) tool to work the fascia & muscle fibers where they need to be and instantly a lot of other 'owie' spots disappeared. I've got some low IT band syndrome issues (down by my left knee) and some other muscular imbalances in my lower legs. In a nutshell...my muscles are trying to compensate for a muscle issue in my quads, and in protecting the joints above and below (knee & hip), it's wreaking some havoc. I wished I had written down the proper terminology. I'm to run tomorrow, do my prescribed exercises every other day, stretch lots, foam roll my IT bands and calves/shins & go again next week. I'm hopeful. |

My problem is this, I have literally tens of thousands of miles ingrained in my muscle memory that I am trying to overcome and I am not sure whether this is a good thing or not. Of course when I was at the top of my running game my foot strike was similar to this, but not because of the method described. It was because when you are running 12-15 MPH you have already started to pull the foot back before it hits the ground. (hard to explain but if you watch a slow motion video of elite distance runners you can see it) I also am pretty sure thinking back that even my slow runs would have resmebled the mid foot, under center of gravity strike you describe. However, back then my "slow" runs that I could hold all day were some were right around 7 minutes...still pretty fast. My problem is that now that I am conciously trying to run very slowly, forcing this to happen is feeling very akward and wrong. I will keep working with it for another month or so and hopefully see some improvement as mileage increases. I hope my results will be similar to yours as I am very excited about entering this new sport and would love to have it be more than my orthopod said which was basically one shot and done after a couple years. I'm following instructions for now and integrating the run very slowly so we shall see. Thanks for the feedback on the change in form, I'll keep you informed as I continue to work through it. Chris |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning everyone. Anyone have big plans for the weekend? Anyone racing? Nothing exciting on the agenda for me. Swim/strength today. Swim/run on Saturday and bike/run on Sunday. Hoping to actually get outside and ride on Sunday! |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HI KIDS! Jason I would love to try chi running but I think I need you to come here and show me ![]() Greggah is a HUGE Hoka fan too (and I know Jason is). I tried the Bondi Bs and I think between a combo of the drastic drop change and maybe a half size too big, my tendonitis flared up and I panicked and returned them. I WANTED to love them though. Another busy day ahead. Although it's 10 and I should already be working (tee hee). We're trying to go skiing again this weekend. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Then NEXT weekend it's off to CO to ski for a week. WOOO HOOO Ok, have a great day everyone! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ended up throwing my bike day to Saturday; got wind gusting up to 30 mph that'll be coming in as a crosswind later today. I don't think it'll be a good idea to be out in that when trying to learn how to ride a road bike properly. That being said, I'm going out for a 30 minute walk at about 3 today and seeing how my PF is holding up. It's been about two weeks, so I'm gonna start easing back up the ladder if it's cooperative. I still think the last plan I was on flared it up because it was too aggressive for my capabilities, but the one I'm on is about double the timeframe but eases in very slowly. Hopefully, it'll be perfect for my needs. |

![]() Wow! Suzy thank for your comments...I'll let you know what I think of the shoes. They are due in tomorrow. I can't wait to try them!!! Jason, thank you so much! The only thing better would be a video! I'm going to google it over the weekend and see what I can find. I've got time to adapt to the Chi running style, so I'll give it a whirl...can't be any worse, and can only be better, so why not? We are off to my daughter's gymnastics meet this weekend. Gotta squeeze one more run in my old shoes in beforehand. I'm bagging my swim tonight b/c I have some crud that my typhoid daughter gave me on Monday. I hate swimming with the sniffles. Have a great weekend everyone. BTW, I am loving this forum...you guys have great ideas and information! Thank you for letting me into the group! |

It's actually a quiet weekend coming up...no races, no swim meets, no visitors, no trips anywhere. I have my long run of the week (a whopping 5 miles) and then I'll be done for the week. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry I've been AWOL for the past few weeks. Just moved back to the states and then turned around and flew to a conference the next weekend. Now I'm going out of town this weekend for a Job interview. Hopefully I can get some strength training done in the hotel where we are staying. Since I got back I haven't done any because there is no gym here and I'm not one to spring on a membership anyplace. I've been killing the runs though and got back going in the pool. Hopefully I will get a bike soon and can really get the training into full swing. Side note: I also just ordered a Garmin 310xt with heart rate monitor from amazon using the Christmas Gift card from the school I was working at... pretty excited for that to come in... I'm a sucker for new gadgets... even if they are a generation old ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nathan- Congrats on getting some new gear and good luck on the job interview. I also just got the 310xt and while I'm sure I will step up to the 910 sooner than later, it has been a great place to start. I finally think I have all my screens and data fields set up and am linking properly to garmin connect and Trainer Road. The GSC 10 speed and cadence sensor got delivered by the amazon elf yesterday so I will work on setting that up sometime today and then I'll be able monitor virtual power on trainer road. Although, I'm not sure I want to see how slow and ineffective I really am! I did have some problems getting my watch unit to pair with the ant+ stick but it all worked out in the end. Have a great weekend, hope you can get some workouts in at the hotel. Chris Edited by 43YORook 2014-01-18 6:50 AM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning! We made it to the weekend. Full day of training ahead for me. First thing up for me is a swim. Then later in the day a bike workout followed by a short run. Chilly here this morning but still hoping tomorrow morning will be warmer so I can ride outside some. I'm not a huge NFL fan...mostly because my lifelong team, the Redskins, have been so bad. I'm picking for Seattle and New England to win this weekend. Enjoy the weekend folks! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good morning all: I've been following along while I've been out of town for work. Western Canada to Michigan. Very nice area. Erika, great job on the list. Gregg, awesome bike. I really like. I've had enough treadmills and indoor spin bikes. I'm ready to get back outside for a run! Thanks for the advice on Trainer road those who commented. I will look into it. In the far northern climates icy road are one factor that prevents winter riding but darkness is the bigger issue. This time of year it stays dark until about 9am and by 430 it would be too dark to ride. Although summers are amazing in the other direction. I've left for work on my bike at 5am and needed to put on sunscreen! My wife has been on my bike and trainer while I was away. Today we are shopping for a bike for her. She has never riden a road bike outside but it she in interested, what the heck! Nelson |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today's Plan: Gently wake up around 6 AM, which is sleeping in a bit for us. Jump on the trainer for a light 30 spin while my wife wakes up our daughter and gets a little breakfast into her before her swim practice. Drive the short 5 min to our club. She gets changed while I stretch a bit. She gets to her practice ready to do her WU at 7 AM; I head out for my long run of the week along the Baltimore Harbor waterfront. Instead, What Actually Happened: I wake up at 4:15 and take a little bit to fall back asleep...and then I"M OUT COLD. I groggily wake up and hear some rustling going on downstairs, and sleepily notice that's it's starting to get light outside. HOLY $H1T!!! IT'S STARTING TO GET LIGHT OUT!!!! I roll over and look at the clock...6:55. I start cussing like the waking up scenes in Four Weddings and a Funeral and run around trying to find anything to put on. I have no idea where my outdoor gear is, so I slap on shorts and a running shirt. I run downstairs and my daughter looks like death. We march to the car and off to the gym, getting there about 10 minutes late. So, I had to do my five miles on the treadmill as penance. |
