Feels like I'm hardly racing with about once a month this year. It's quite possible to fit in more with the shorter events. How much more can depend on things like the fitness level, but also the personality of the individual. Some do just fine with the mental aspect, but others need a break.

Attention all AG NAT Manatees looking to meet up. Ima let you know where I will be, and if you choose to accept, can join me for any of it. PM me for my number if you are interested

1. I'll be in Chicago Wednesday night - Friday morning. I am meeting Monica for a run, poutine and beer. I'm also planning on doing some quasi-touristy things (mostly oriented towards art/design/architecture) Oh yeah, Hot Dougs and some deep dish pizza place is on my list (can't remember the name right off.)

2. Meeting switch to do the practice swim in Milwaukee on Friday. I believe this is between 11:00-1:00 and we have not yet nailed down a time but I prefer a little later. After that we have to take our bikes to transition. THEN at some point dinner and beer. I know ya'll triathletes are super picky about that stuff. I am not. So, if you prefer to pick a location I am in.

3. Post race on Saturday I have all intentions of riding the mechanical chili pepper at La Perla  the freekin' thing has a live web cam, you should all watch. We don't have to eat at La Perla but riding the pepper is a must. I was also told getting Kopps, Cafe Lulu and Maria's Pizza are all very important.

That looks like a blast.  I'll probably be filling in the later part of this year with 5Ks and such.  And it dawned on me that I'll be doing a couple centuries.

There probably wasn't much competition amongst the 80 year olds.

You are going to have a blast! Giordano's is the name of the place. I am already jealous, although, when we were there, the boys pointed out that they do mail delivery. Mmmmmm.

We didn't do it, but everyone was telling us that we should have done an architectural tour by boat. But just walking around is amazing. Be sure to look at some of the stones in the Tribune building. The boys and I must have stopped by there a half a dozen times.

Be sure to give us the time you'll be in the mechanical chili pepper. That I have to see.

Dear Manatees. I have a slight scheduling problem.

The 10k Trail race (the one with the multiple water crossings that I did last year) is September 21. I am already signed up for a half marathon on September 22. I want to do both of these.

Last year, I said that I would use the 10k as a training run, but I ended up racing it. I think the half marathon was the week after the trail run last year.

So this year, I'm thinking of going ahead and racing the 10k and then using the half marathon as a "recovery" type training run, since I don't seem to be able to maintain any kind of speed over 13.1 miles.

Of course, this could be scuttled because I am scheduled to go on an accreditation visit on . . . September 22. Sheesh. How do I manage to complicate things so completely?

Anyway, I figure I can run the 13.1 in the morning (after having run the 10k the morning before), shower at the park, drive down to Wichita and fly out for New Mexico and then do the visit Monday and Tuesday (not much time for running anyway on these visits) and then fly back to Kansas on Wednesday and by then, be ready to hit the ground running, so to speak.

That's only 19.3 miles over two days, which right now, is a lot, but by then, not so horrible. My last tri is August 10, and after that is done, I will become running focused through December. My running has been dismally weak over the last 8 weeks, what with one thing and another.

Thoughts?

How much do you want to go for it on the 10k and what will your running look like going into these? It's quite possible to do both, but depends on what you're looking to do. I wouldn't really want to run a half marathon the day after really going after a 10k. I could do it, but don't think it would be that much fun. If I only just picked up the effort some for the 10k, the HM would likely be a lot more enjoyable. Either way, I wouldn't really be looking at HM distance being anything like "recovery" no matter how I ran the events.

TJ - You are an awesome, racing, poetic, and loving person. Your family and friends are blessed to have you in their lives.

Jen - I hope that all works out on the job front. You're in my prayers.

Felicia - I think if you have a well paced 10K, then the HM is possible, but it is only 7-8 weeks away. I think I remember a long term goal of yours that involves some real distance stuff, so this might be a good learning experience. It'll give you some ideas about where you are and where you ultimately want to be.

Salty - We all need to know the time that chili riding is going to happen. The rest of the trip sounds like a blast as well.

I hope everyone enjoys the midway point of the week!

Around here, We have people training to run the Goofy (HM on saturday, full on sunday) at Disney every year. This year Disney has the Dopey challenge - a 5k Thursday, 10k, Friday, HM Saturday, and full Sunday. When dealing with Goofy, The conventional wisdom said you really can only race 1 of the races and you really couldn't race a full after a HM - assuming racing means trying for a PR, so the HM was the race to try for a PR and then the full was just get through it as best you can. Some people do super fast times on both, but for most the marathon was not their best effort. Training for back to back races like that means training back to back days. The 10k and HM are obviously fewer miles than the Goofy/dopey, but I think the same principal applies.

so, can you do this? Yes, but my advice is to get those back to back training days in. It doesn't have to be every week, but the more you can do, the better.

1. I'll be in Chicago Wednesday night - Friday morning. I am meeting Monica for a run moving forward at a pace slightly faster than a walk for speedy Salty whilst Monica trudges along beside asking frequently "can we stop now", poutine and beer. I had to fix that first point for you.

There are a TON of architecture tours to choose from - the Architecture Foundation has a number of walking/boat/bus tours as well as a pretty cool store on Michigan Avenue:  http://www.architecture.org/

Giordano's is the most touristy deep dish pizza place, but the hubs & I actually prefer Gino's East (and there's one located conveniently a block from our apartment), and there will absolutely be poutine on Thursday!

We may be in Milwaukee for Friday night dinner - will let you know, but the chili pepper riding is a MUST... and there will be pictures.

Very cool, thanks! I volunteered with the Seattle Architecture Foundation doing walking tours for a bit. I might self guide but I do like the idea of a boat. I once built a model in design school of the John Hancock building using a Fiji water bottle and a brick. Symbolism? I think so!

Thoughts?

I don't disagree with the comments from everyone else. I'm just here to say let me  know if you have time to get together for a meal or even coffee.Laughing

Definitely. I don't have the schedule for the visit yet, so I'm not sure what all will be happening and when.

Thanks for the comments. I feel the need to remind everyone that my "racing" speed is most of you all's "I can't run that slow" speed. So, "racing" the 10-k on a single track trail is not going to be speedy, for anyone there. But I learned from running it last year that I have the unexplainable need to pass people in front of me, especially when they are showing weakness. (insert evil grin).

I hadn't thought about the Disney Goofy challenge days. That also reminded me that last year, I ran 6-7 miles the day before the 25k "race." When I am running focused, I usually run 6-7 days a week, so I'm not worried about back to back runs. My only "concern," if I have one, is that my mileage is way down right now. I'm sure I can build it back up again, reasonably quickly, but I am also all about avoiding injury.

I still have time to think about it. Sunday is supposed to be a travel day for the visit, and if I run the half, I won't be able to get into Albuquerque until about 8:30 p.m. That may be kind of late for my team.

You are going to be really busy, so don't beat yourself up about pacing for any of the races. Other than that, so long as you know what you are getting yourself into, you are going to be just fine.

Taking into consideration what you just said about your mileage being relatively low, please please please listen to your body and don't push it on any of you 19.3 miles.

Can you please work on slowly ramping those miles up now? You have a little time.

Attention all AG NAT Manatees looking to meet up. Ima let you know where I will be, and if you choose to accept, can join me for any of it. PM me for my number if you are interested

1. I'll be in Chicago Wednesday night - Friday morning. I am meeting Monica for a run moving forward at a pace slightly faster than a walk for speedy Salty whilst Monica trudges along beside asking frequently "can we stop now", poutine and beer.

I'm really getting excited for AGN. I am in for swim and most likely dinner that night. I can probably find something I'd eat on any menu, so I can defer restaurant choice to anyone who cares. I would like to be finished with dinner by 9 though, as I'm staying outside of town and should make an attempt to get good sleep. I don't get on mechanical anything, but I sure will cheer on everyone who does :) Salty, all this architecture and design talk--what do you do for a living?

I'm a designer (architectural/interior) for SBUX. Smile
