If I'm "just" running, I can play with it a bit, but I'm very careful about the timing of intake. Originally posted by bcraht Originally posted by JJ- I think I'll skip the pickle juice. I'm also considering Paleo for Athletes. I dunno why I'm set on changing everything I know and trust 12 weeks out from an 70.3 but I am. I really want to lost these last 20 pounds and I can't seem to do it with my current nutrition. I have found that it is a bad idea for me to try and lose weight while training for a race. If it happens, great, but I save my weight loss for the off season. My body can't handle the stresses of hard/long training and weight loss at the same time and I end up injured. More than a few have found that. They aren't entirely mutually exclusive, but it works much better if the concentration is more on one or the other. |

And, yeah, that frog suit is begging for extra curricular photo ops. Is it hot?Originally posted by kgore Hey all. Just checking in---I wanted to share again today: I was called in to do a bit in the frog suit, as it was a special "kid's day" thing; They also got Slamson, the King's mascot to come out too. Well, my parents simply couldn't miss out on a chance to visit, so we got a pic with them! I am the giant frog...just in case it wasn't obvious.... Hahahaha! Awesome family pic Sorry, its been a kinda busy, yet "Meh" couple of days...To answer questions: ---I cannot borrow the suit, the zoo is very protective... ---It is exceedingly hot, but there is a vest thingie that I wear within it that is equipped to hold several icepacks and a camel back, so I stay pretty cool. ---Mom is doing very well, she is starting to use a cane to walk with, but (for once) she is taking the time to recover correctly by staying with the wheel chair. Dad is also continuing improvement--he is down nearly 60 pounds, and aims to lose another 40, which would put him at a weight lower than ANY I have ever seen him at. He is moving better and in less pain than in previous months/years. So they are doing well |

Berries are my fruit of choice being lower GI and I always have my fruit with cream/creme fraiche or full fat unsweetened yoghurt. If I have an apple I go French and have it with cheese. A mandarin i have with nuts - just having the fat along with the fruit stops a real sugar spike. |

Yeah I can't do Paleo because of the dairy thing. With this dairy is approved! BUT some people are insulin resistant and find they need to cut dairy to lose weight. I tend to eat cheese in moderation, i have heavy cream on my berries. I should have it in my coffee but I have a soy latte instead and full fat milk in my tea. Again it's all moderation. On days where i really overeat all this stuff I don't gain weight and that's great! |

Might be you want to tweak other things in your diet before race and then hit it full on after. Anyone in the Nutrition thread tried to make big change with big race on deck? That would be me ... I'd have to look back in my logs but I'm pretty sure I went vegan with 8-9 weeks to IMJ. I was probably a coupe 2-3 kilos down from IMNZ after my father's death, the food poisoning took another 3-4 off I think, but the vegan diet's taken probably 1.5k a week off. That, and 15-20 hours of training Paleo and vegan aren't crazy diets, IMO. "Crazy" is anything that precludes a well-balanced diet with everything you need. The reason vegan worked for me is that it forced me to really plan and evaluate all my food choices and nutrition as a whole. Any food plan that makes you do that, and in which you (reasonably, without cutting anything like say PROTEIN short) are consuming a fair amount of calories less than you were, is going to work. |

Something I'm rather interested in is how to get more protein through methods such as this. There was an interesting thread Lauren Goss posted about her diet in ST ... people were freaking about how few calories she ate and not enough protein, but on closer analysis, she was actually getting what she needed. For one thing, I mostly eat whole foods (the processing to make tahu/tofu and tempe is, if disgusting, pretty natural. Heh). For an elite-level male endurance athlete, which frankly your training load often resembles, you'd be looking at 1.5-1.6g/kg protein. For me, a female endurance athlete at peak iron training load, I'm looking at 1.2-1.3g/kg. I keep a pretty close eye on protein intake (and everything else), but here are some sample protein-tracking entries from my notes. At 63kg I'm doing okay.

The juice from these is a little sweet, little salty and a little spicy. I haven't used it during training, but I might try that. I absolutely drink it straight outta the jar, but I can't imagine it would taste that palatable if it wasn't chilled. I really hate sports drinks though, so I'll try it and report back. |

The two major variables affecting protein needs were training load (volume + intensity) and gender. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great replies and info from everyone, Too many replies to quote each one: Calories In vs Calories Out While I do believe this is true it was my stumbling block for 10 years and I won't go back to it. I struggled with my weight for 10 years while counting every calorie I put into my body. My problem became not so much total number of calories but what they came from (I'm gonna drink 1500 calories of beer and skip dinner tonight). 2 years ago in November I quit counting calories and lost over 70 pounds. Vegan Yanti I'm impressed but I love red meat just way too much ![]() Paleo I read the book last night and I don't think it's for me. I travel alot and one benefit of my current eating style is I can always find a good balanced healthy snack anywhere I go. I think Paleo would make it more difficult. Diet and Ironman Training I agree that a hardcore diet during training is a bad idea however I don't have an off season this year. Since my very first Full IM is in May I am already building base now. Summary I guess the best thing for me to do is just eat cleaner, less weekend cheat meals, cut out the cookies and pop tarts ![]() I know that as I began to get my volume my calories in vs out will take care of itself and I will burn the last 20 pounds I'm shooting for. I just need to kick myself in the butt and get serious! Edited by JJ- 2013-08-02 9:36 AM |
