Runner | ![]() Spokes - 2008-07-25 2:28 PM If I don't push myself I'll run abysmally slow, and that's one of the reasons that I did so poorly last year after I moved out to California and didn't have a gym membership anymore and wasn't running on a dreadmill. The dreadmill FORCED me to run faster. The dreadmill was why I was setting PRs in March, April and May... and after that it all went downhill. Yeah, I finished a marathon, but my mile times dropped because I need someone or something to push me. Yeah, I'm not buying this. What mile times are you looking at? |

I finished and looked at the time and I was ahead of the last time that I ran it at a "race pace". I have no faith in my ability to tell how fast I am going and I naturally run faster when I relax and don't think so much. How did the run feel? How did you feel the next day, or the day after? Did it negatively impact any other training? If everything is fine, then I'd say you had a good run. The whole point is to be relaxed. It felt great - it was humid as all get out, so I was very warm and sweaty just afterward, but I didn't hurt or have any ill effects for the next day's workout. It just confuses me on how I am supposed to run in a race - especially one that is just a run. I mean, I think we all know that I am not going to be visiting any podiums on riuns any time soon, but I have increased my pace from over 15:00 miles when I started to under 12's and that has been about 3 months of racing. I just need to get more time in and I think that I will adapt. I just worry that if I try and "run hard" I don't actually run as fast as if I don't. |

I think people beat themselves up trying. It's about intensity, but also about being fluid, relaxed. And you're exactly right, it takes time and practice. Racing especially. That's why I'm starting to shy away from using time goals. I think they create a false sense of what one should be doing in a race. |

Yeah, I finished a marathon, but my mile times dropped because I need someone or something to push me. Yeah, I'm not buying this. What mile times are you looking at? Well, I'm roughly 2 - 2 1/2 minutes SLOWER running a 5K now than I was last year *before* I ran the mary and put in all those base miles... right now, I'm struggling to run a sub 9:00 mile, and I was cruising at 9:00 pace when I set my half PR in May '07 before I undertook the marathon training. Now, I know now I 'undertrained' mileage wise by probably 15 percent, but that still puts me over 1000 miles running for last year. I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, man... unless age has just decided to wack my butt all of a sudden out of nowhere. I fully expected my 5K time to come down this year, or at least to return to ballpark where it was earlier this year... and right now I'm sitting right where I was when I started running in '06... its frustrating man. I either have to quit doing everything BUT running to see gains, or give up on running, it seems. I think its possible that I should be able to run AND cycle and see progress in both areas but I'm stuck right now. Just as long as you are out there, though, right? It's all good. |

I think its possible that I should be able to run AND cycle and see progress in both areas but I'm stuck right now. Look, sparky, if you don't maintain, then of course you're going to be running slower. Just because you did over 1000 miles last year doesn't mean that's going to automatically make you faster THIS year, especially in late July. You have admitted before that your running volume is off compared to last year. So yeah, you're gonna be somewhat slower. You took how much time off after the marathon with almost no running? And this is ignoring the simple fact that you're entirely too wrapped up in proving to yourself that you're worth something merely because you ran a 5K faster this time than last time. Because no one here gives a rat's behind how fast you are. None of us are your ex, or her boyfriend, so you got nothing to prove. You want to improve? Then relax first and get it out of your head that you need to be at a certain point right now compared to the past. Because it don't work that way. Then you get out there and run because you enjoy running, because it feels good, it feels right, and you WANT to do it for YOU, not in some silly quest to prove something to someone who doesn't care. Well, me too. I'll go as fast as I can and see where that puts me... I could tell myself to do it less than 9 hours, but I would hurt myself trying for that. My time goal changes based on my conditioning. 15 hours should be doable (right now), but I'm hoping for 14. But that's today. I'm hoping I get faster, and just before the race I can hope for 12-13. But I need to wait and see. |
