My kids are 17 and 12. Each had swim lessons when they were little. Neither really likes the water much (especially the elder boy). We did our duty but it comes down to personality in the end. I had swim lessons when I was very little...then just recently started swimming again...so maybe, sometimes it takes 20+ years ?!!? |

Now, I can get a 74' schwin or a slightly newer fuji both with original parts for free but I'm thinking that the expense in getting them road ready might be too much. Do parts on bikes "go bad" I know for sure they need new tires, or should I just stick with my MTB? As you can probably tell I know nothing about bikes. |

Bikes that old would be steel and could be heavy. Many of the rubber/plastic parts could need replacing: tires, tubes, brake pads, cable housings, and cables. Also, the bottom bracket, headset, and wheel bearings may need service and repacking. You can put slick tires on your MTB and it will make the bike more comfortable to ride and help make it go faster, and should cost less than $20 per tire. |

I always loved the water, though, and was on the swim team in high school. |

There's a good chance they are just as heavy as your mountain bike. Have you considered trying slick tires on the bike you have and trying that for awhile? It would be about $60, so much less than buying a new bike and you'd get a chance to save more for the road bike you really want. |

A half mile in the clouds opened up and poured. I don't mind getting wet but HATE running in sloppy wet sneakers. Cut it short and back home with a cup of hot tea. |
