Daffodil - 2010-04-11 3:20 PM Kathy - I just read your IM Canada race report.  How inspiring!!!  I can't imagine being able to fight through and coming back from a bike like that.

Thanks!

It wasn't the day I hoped but I learned a lot about myself that was insightful.

I'm hoping IMFL is uneventful for me.

KathyG - 2010-04-06 8:31 PM I'm using a coach for my training for IMFL and the year. I started working with him in December and it's going well. I've used a coach since '05.

I like having someone else to put my plan together, see the big picture, adjust things as needed and discuss what's going on in my training.

Kathy,
I'll be doing my first half, Augusta, this year and my first IM, Florida, next year.
How much should I expect to pay for a coach? How often will I see him/her? How long for a half and how long for an IM?
Thanks
Jaime

Oooh, I love that sound too!

Kathy and Jen, those are some loooooong training hours this early out.  I was doing 12 hours a week before and my new coach was concerned that at that pace, I'd burn out before race day, but then, it's my first IM and I am not quite used to this hard core training.  My longest race to date has been an Olympic which never required more than 8-9 hours at peak.  This is a big adjustment for me, but I'm up for it!

I was admittedly surprised to see the hours. I have no idea what my coach's plan is, but I'm guessing that since I've been working with him for almost 2 years, he thinks I can handle it.  One factor is that I really can't do much in the way of long rides over here.  More than about 4 hours of doing small loops will have me gouging my eyes out.  So I'm guessing he's going for higher volume in small pieces so that when I get home I will be able to do the same volume in larger pieces...i.e. lots of short rides now, fewer rides but longer once I'm home.  It's easy to not burn out when you have the excitement of coming home after 8 months on the road.  In August/September my season will really be just beginning.

Plus this is my second Ironman and we are definitely pushing for a faster one this round.  Though, to get faster I need only stay out of the porta potties.  I easily lost 45' to my 12 porta potty stops at IMAZ in 08.

It is wise to be cautious. November is a long time from now.

I've been doing tris since '04 and IM since '08 so I know what training my body can handle, how much time I have to train (I don't work) and that makes things slightly different than being a first timer with a new coach.

I did 19 hours last week which is more than most weeks I did prior to IM last year. I am doing lots of cycling which adds hours fast. I find when I run 25 mpw or more I get faster so that is where I am now doing most weeks 5x runs. Plus I'm doing a 70.3 next week which is pretty early for someone living in MA so needed some serious saddle time.

I plan on taking mid season break after my 2 or 3 70.3's in July. I'm doing to mentally allow myself to get away and get that hunger back I get when not training plus it is super refreshing...annoying as heck often during it but good in many ways. I've done it most years since '06 and worked well for me.

Doing a late season IM makes the season super long and when we will be doing our longest stuff many of our friends will be done racing for the year.

We all our different in so many ways so trust your plan or your coach and enjoy the journey. It's not about who trains the most or is the fastest but can we all get to the starting line uninjured well trained to have an amazing day in November.

Our goals and reasons for doing an IM are unique to each of us, sure they are similar I suspect.

Yup.  Everyone is in a different place and that's OK.  Two years ago I was barely running a mile and biking for an hour this far from my IM.  I'm in better shape this go-around so I'm guessing my coach wishes to take advantage!

distancegirl - FWIW, I'm working with a coach for my first IM (Florida) as well and he has me at around 10 hours right now too.  Doesn't want me burning out too quickly   The only discipline that I'm training at any distance right now is swimming and that is much easier on the body.

distancegirl- This will be my second IM. Mentally, I won't start calling it "IM training" until July. It is easy to get burned out if you start mentally focusing on the race too early. Especially if you're the least bit OCD about training like I am. lol

Jamie,

Pricing varies a lot from coach to coach.

There are many that are under $150/month but many are up to $300/month or more. Some coaches offer various plans with different costs others only do one plan. Those that do various levels offer different amount of contact and change how often they do your plan.

Key is to find a coach that is a good fit for you...trains you like you enjoy, embraces your goals, you connect with, has contact levels & response times that you are comfortable with and more.

My coaches I have used I do most by email or phone. One lived in my state but saw him maybe 3x a year. Last coach lives in OR and my current coach lives in Canada.

I know folks who like having local coach but often that means they are more a personal trainer and less a tri coach and can cost more since you are paying for more of their time.

That is one crazy workout.  I think it would take me 6 hours to do that, not 4!!!

Jen, I am blown away that you are serving in Iraq and training for IM.  Incredible.  Thank you for serving!

You really didn't need to say that.

@distancegirl, I think in some ways it's easier here....I don't have a lawn to mow or house to clean.  But at the same time, I don't get weekends either!  The training is taking up ALL of my spare time, but I don't have too much else to do really...

200 days seems a ways away but itll be here soon enough. Don't miss out steps and make the long day harder on yourself. Easy to procrastinate, but its hard to finish when you feel unprepared. Get rid of the doubts that creep up on race day by preparing diligently today!

Good advice Phatknot.  I know a lot of us are racing this weekend.  It will give us a chance to see where we are and where we need to improve.  After this race, I will take it easy for a week and then jump into the IM plan I will follow to get me to race day.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Phatknot.  I started training again last night.  Lets see if I can find some consistancy now that ski season is over.  I suppose I'd better - only 199 days left.

So this is my training facility...

http://www.multisport-zone.com/

My coach is one of the stores co-owners.  It is about 40 minutes from where I live, but my office is only 5 minutes away.  I have been doing all of my bike training there since the start of the new year.

Today Lisa Bentley was in at the store.  They were doing a charity event.  Pay $25 (minimum) and ride a 10K time trial on the computrainers with Lisa Bentley.  I was leading for about a minute near the beginning   Lisa Bentley actually cheered for me.  "Go Laura J!"  It was awesome

so my training (what there is of it) is really winging it.  I have the Be IronFit and and Training for multisport athletes books.  I am putting together a combination of those balanced against what time life offers,  which right now is very little.  New job, riduluosly heavy workload, lots of attention, so big pressure and lots of overseas travel.  It's a huge opportunity for me but destroys training plans an fitness levels in a hurry.

A question for all you who have done IM before and have a coach.  I am a few weeks into having a coach and I like him so far.  He has a very good reputation.  Right now he has me at only 5-6 hours per week of training at these distances s/b/r ->3200m/55miles/14miles per week.  That seems low to me.  I was doing about 1/3 more before I hired him.  Is it hard for all you type A's like me to turn your training over to someone else???  I think I need someone to tell me to chill out and trust my (very experienced) new coach.
