I carry a de Soto insulated water bottle with me, and fill it with either water or watered-down Gatorade depending on the distance. They come in about 8 colors so you can get one that matches your bike. |

Nothing that stuck around but at one point it was really wet heavy snow falling. Felt like November vs. April!! I carry a water bottle or watered down Gatorade on any run over an hour. If it was really hot I might bring some on a 45min run or so. |

NOTHING better for your overall fitness than Running and Biking Hills. I use Fuel Belts for hydration. I have the Fuel Belt Helium (two bottles) for runs of 45 minutes to 1:15 minutes. For Runs over 90 minutes I have a 4 bottle Fuel Belt. They are expensive, however they are priceless in the warm weather and quickly pay for themself. They also have a zipper pouch to carry keys, gels, etc... |

If it's warm/hot out use a sport drink with electrolytes (Gatorade, Powerade, etc...) just plain water will not always get it done. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED jmhpsu93 - 2011-04-17 2:23 PM 10K...DONE!!! PR @ 49:08. Full race report is here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=248652 I was struggling a bit going up the last hard hill and I thought of you all cheering me on and just got it up the hill. Felt really great during the race (well...considering it was a 10K and I was hammering it). I have another 5K in two weeks where I'm going to push for one of my pre-season goals...breaking 22:30. Thanks for the well-wishes, everyone! I just want to publicly praise Mike for doing a great job at this race. Primarily because he has experience on this course, he devised a specific mile-by-mile strategy and executed it pretty well. That's using your head . Really FANTASTIC Race Mike. http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=248652 If you read his report, you can see not every mile went according to plan, but in the end he was pretty spot-on given the conditions. This is the epitome of what Racing, Training, Setting Goals and Accomplishing them is ALL ABOUT. You need a PLAN. Once you have a bluepring/schematic/road map/ short-term & medium-term goals all pointing toward a single GOAL you're halfway home cause you no longer have to think; you just have to execute. And that's what Mike did. He used his brain before the race and mapped out a plan/strategy and then during the race he didn't have to think, as he already had a plan and just needed to stick to it, to the best of his ability based of his past experience and his training. And the result was a 4 min COURSE PR and 1 min OA PR. And given how hilly this course sounds, a 4 min PR is huge. BIG KUDOS MIKE Edited by Dream Chaser 2011-04-18 1:38 PM |

Goals Actuals B: 500 miles / 264 miles R: 85 miles / 34.4 miles S: 25,000 yards / 6,800 yards Str: 4 hours / 5 minutes Weight: < 220 / 231.4 as of today So....pretty much on target with the bike, but off the mark a bit with the run and the swim. I have some work to do, but this should be a pretty good week. The weight is moving in the right direction but very slowly. Train on! Edited by gatjr33 2011-04-18 2:29 PM |

It's been so cold in ny it hasn't been a big deal to wait until home? I use one of the smaller camel backs during my runs, especially the longer summer ones. I fill it with ice first then fill it with water. Nothing like drinking ice cold water on a run. I will also use it on really long bike rides if I'm not sure of water stops on the way. I would rather carry the extra weight to be sure I am hydrated. I have a very high sweat rate so having the fluids along helps to ensure I maintain hydration/performance needed for longer training periods. In fact I will often stop and fill it up during a 10+ mile run. It is also a good place to carry gels/phone/keys etc. For me the waist belt systems seem to bounce around a bit and are a bit of a distraction, maybe I should try some different ones, anyway the camelback works well for me. In fact I used it during my two HIMs (run only), both were very hot days and it helped me stay hydrated. On race day it is nice to sip fluids over the course of the event vice having to chug glasses of water at the aid stations. Makes staying hydrated easier, additionally it allows you to chase your energy source/gel with water. |

And they published the official results today, and I have to update that PR down two seconds to 49:06. Woo hoo!! It was really nice to see a race plan come together after it not quite working due to cramping at the Baltimore HM last year. I think I've solved a big hydration issue (was doing too much of it during races...maybe WAY too much of it). Normally I would carry a water bottle through a race like this but I got rid of that security blanket and just sipped a bit at the two water stops. The Garmin provided my some really valuable feedback on both HTFU'ing up the hills and keeping the pace down on the downhills. I was spent yesterday afternoon. Fell asleep watching baseball on the couch for a few minutes and I probably only take like 2-3 naps a year. Pretty sore today but getting better through the day. |

Regular 97 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Mike Congrats on the PR. Awesome job. By the way, drinking too much is dangerous. I didn't know that when I ran my first LA Marathon. I felt so bloated and sick after the ran and I realized I overhydrated. Didn't know the danger of overhydration. For run about 7-8 miles, I usually do not hydrate unless it's warm out her in LA. I guess I should at least bring a gel with me. Ran 7.4 miles this Sat in about 1:05, felt good. Was trying to keep form, impact ball of feet, not heel strike. |

It's been miserable here. You'd think it was October - cold and wet with intermittent snow, hail, sleet and rain. It's been like this ALL week! I have a couple of long rides planned but geez... my cycling gym is closed Friday and SUNDAY!!?? The nerve! I hope there's a sunny patch I can take advantage of - otherwise it'll be a loooong session on the trainer. What's everyone else got in store? Survey - For those of you looking to drop a few pounds - what will you indulge on this weekend? I think our Easter Bunny is going to focus on non-edible items with the excuse we don't want the puppy to eat the chocolate and die. So new skipping rope, chalk, bubbles, and maybe a tennis racket for my little one. |

We do that as well for our daughter. She gets a couple of chocolate things but mostly eggs with dollar bills or some fun little games or stuff. I mean, how much candy can an 8-year-old eat anyway? Never mind, don't answer that. I probably don't want to know. We have like 100 people coming for Easter on Sunday (note: slight exaggeration, but it feels like that) plus we'll have friends and their two kids staying here the rest of the this week, plus my mom over the weekend). I'm going to try to squeeze in SOMETHING on Saturday morning before lacrosse. |

We're going to a brunch after church(assuming the steeple doesn't collapse when I walk through the doors) and I fully intend to chow down like a condemned man. We don't give alot of chocolate/candy to the kids either simply cause they just don't eat it. It ends up in the pantry for a year til we throw it out. So maybe a chocolate bunny some jelly beans and an easter egg hunt in the yard with some $ in the eggs. I have Friday and Monday off so hopefully any extra training I get in those days will offset the gluttony on Sunday(at least that's what I'm telling myself). |

Perhaps a podium finish for you this weekend? Yeah, Bobby. We want some hardware! I was 6th OA last year at this Race. Compare to last year my Run right now is much faster, and my Swim is much faster, and (at worst) my Bike is the same. Based on these variables, I have a crack at Top 3 OA. I'm going to Race flat-out and basically it'll boil down to "who shows up at the race". Meaning, if a few fasties don't choose to race this year, I have a shot at a Top Spot. A few guys who didn't show up last year could show up this year, and I could throw down a faster time and end up out of the Top 10!! So the only thing I can control is A.) I'm going to show up and B.) I will lead by example and think about you guys while I am in scorching 10/10 pain. And since it's a Sprint, I know I can risk pushing into that Pain Cave right from the first Swim stroke to the last run stride. If I get some hardware, I'll proudly post a pic on this forum right here and it will be ALL OF OURS. We'll share it as I'll dedicate it to the group. |

Side note for everyone, some great swim instruction videos on the BT home page from the creator of Total Immersion. I have learned a lot and I haven't finished all of them yet. Swimming has always been my biggest weakness, I can't wait to hit the pool and try out some of his techniques. |

Veteran 265 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Dream Chaser - 2011-04-15 8:57 AM So it's Friday and it's the 15th... HALFWAY THROUGH APRIL!! Doesn't it feel like we just wrote down our April Goals a few days ago? Well it wasn't a few days ago... it was 2 weeks ago! A half a month ago already!! Time does fly. And let's see how we're all doing. Sammeg gets a pass cause he was sick for a week. So cut your goal down by 1/4 Ted. I set my goal on an approx 15% increase from the prior month, and based on what Volume my Ironman Training Program said I should be doing. Here are my April Goals and then my halfway actual volume: Bilke Goal: 17 hours Halfway Point: 10 hours 20 mins Run Goal: 14 hours Halfway Point: 8 hours 31 mins Swim Goal 11 hours Halfway Point: 4 hours 19 mins So I am actually exceeding my goal for the Bike and Run, and after I swim 1 hour today I'll be right on target for my Swim. Knowing this gives me a boost and confidence, and the mojo to push through the next two weeks. See how that works! It feels like I set my goal just a few days ago, but it was actually two weeks ago, and I can see the actual results and it feels awesome to be halfway home with my accomplishment! HOW IS EVERYONE ELSE DOING AT THE HALFWAY POINT WITH THEIR APRIL GOALS???
Sigh....this has been an unproductive training month for me....very little training - whole lotta work. Not complaining though - I am a tile contractor and feel very fortunate to have the work I do in this economy. We have seen things pick up for 2 months straight now to the point I have added 2 new installers this past week - woo-hoo! Hope things continue - work wise that is!!! So with the new help, I will be getting back into the gym & some training. April hasn't been as unproductive as my logs show...not much better but some. I did catch my logs up for this week. Congrats to all of you for sticking with your plans and achieving what you have with your training! And thanks for not kicking me out of the group |
