Well I just finished my marathon training program today. The race is set for Sunday. Brian and Steve are also running this weekend and I'm sure they are finishing up in the next day too.

So give me your best pre-race tips for keeping nerves in check and staying calm. It's starting to sink in whats ahead. My body wants to jump up and run 12 miles but my mind is going what the heck were you thinking.....

1.  have a plan based on your training

2.  find your pace group and stick with them so you don't deviate from the plan

3.  RELAX.....you did the training everything else will fall into place.

Yep, the hay is in the barn!  Brian's advice is spot on and the only things I can add is to:

Stay off your feet as much as possible.

Hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more between now and Saturday.

Carb loading is a popular tradition the night before a marathon, but it is actually better 2 nights before or so I have read.

Try and get some good sleep tonight and tomorrow night as you will probably not sleep well Saturday night.

Relax, you have done the work!

Oh, one other thing, I seem to race a little better if the wife and I go to bed a little early the night before a race, if you know what I mean. WinkEmbarassed

Ken, I don't think it will help any of us if we went to bed early the night before with your wife. I'm just saying! LOL I had to do that, no disrespect meant.

I am finishing up a HUGE paper that I HATE right now for school. I thought it would be finished prior to dinner tonight but it wasn't and my WONDERFUL (insert a lot of swear words here) GF just read it and thank God she did not use red because I think she would of cut herself with a knife if she had. Onto make some corrections. Did not run today because of this but going to get up at 6am and run then.

Good Morning All.

Happy Friday!

I have been up since 2:30am when my dog woke me up to go outside and I have been awake ever since. We had to fire an employee yesterday (one that I supervised) so now my already overloaded work schedule just got much bigger.  So, I am headed off to work to try and make some sense of the mess that was left.  If I keep this schedule up, doing morning trainings might be an option

Best of luck to all those racing this weekend.

Kathleen

Adam, Brian, Steve - Good luck and have fun racing this weekend!!!  Can't wait to read the RRs!

Kathleen - sorry to hear about work - I hope it doesn't ruin your weekend.

Off for a 2 1/2 hour bike ride (as soon as it warms up a little more!)

May goals:

PR at Irongirl on Sunday (5/6), even if it's only a few minutes.

Start increasing my long runs to 40 minutes to an hour. I may add more run frequency with short runs.

Start visiting the pool again, and get some swims in.  HIM training starts on June 4th, the day after Amica Sprint Triathlon.

HTFU and get in a run early in the mornings. Bleh...it's has reached the mid 90's now. Too hot.

Like Kathleen I have started reading Don Finks book Be Iron Fit and he talks about the value of getting the training done early in the day.  It is a good feeling to be eating breakfast knowing that you don't have the training hanging over your head!

Nice goals for the month DJ!

Unfortunately - the breakfast will have to wait until AFTER my runs. I've learned over the months that I don't run well with food in my stomach. It causes all sorts of odd issues that I don't experience by eating the same foods before my bike. But hey..."Run fast so you can eat breakfast!!"  will work. :-)  IF it's a long run, I will take in something, no worries there!  I'm gonna get that book. Thanks!

I LOVE getting workouts in the morning!!!!!

DJ, good luck this weekend!  What are the irongirl distances for this race?

Brian

I will start to love early workouts...I gotta!!  Worse case is if it gets too hot, I can run on the indoor track at the gym. I'm going to set a goal to if any LONG runs...they must be done outside.

Irongirl is a sprint - 800m/22.5k/5k. I've done this twice already. Didn't make a huge PR last year (basically because the bike course was cut a little more shorter, and I got clocked in the head). I'm not expecting too much for the bike, but I'm hoping for a bigger PR for the run. We'll see!

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR RACE!!!

Crushed the 12K, 7.55 miles.  PR'd by 3 minutes over last year, 4th in AG.  All good. I credit more running, great strength training and leanness.

I did my sprint today - it went really well and was a well organized race.

I'm pleased overall with my performance.  My swim was much better, but this was my first open water swim and I totally lost my form when I realized that I couldn't see in the water - definatley something to work on.  I was able to pass several people (this race was about 1/2 first timers and almost all beginners and I put myself towards the back of the time trial start), but the form break down caused me to be "huffing and puffing" when I got out.

The bike went a little slow at first due to the strain of the swim, but I eventually found a rythem - I passed several people, but it seemed like everyone that passed me was in my age group.

Little slow to start the run, but again, I found my footing and my second wind and I'm almost sure that I ran it in negative slits - I was able to muster a sprint for the last 150 yards or so.

Really enjoyed it - this was only my second tri and I made a big step forward from the first one.  I don't have my results yet because I had to get out pretty quickly and they aren't posted online yet - I will do a RR after I know my times.

Great job Russ!  Sounds like you had a great race and came out knowing what you want to work on!

My swim coach, when I can get an empty lane, has me swim some laps with my eyes closed.  The main purpose is to learn to swim straight but I had the same initial reaction as you did not being able to see so it might help in more ways than one!

I look forward to reading your race report!

Had a nice ride on the bike yesterday, I may try running again today I took it a little easy with the run last week after the half as the ITB was quite tight and I wanted to let it recover.  But it is feeling pretty good this morning and the sun is shining so...

Good luck again to the racers today!  What are the rest of you guys doing?

I'm back! Pretty much did exactly as planned. I got a 1:32:10. According to my garmin I held a 6:56 pace. But my garmin said the course was longer than 13.1. So my time slip says a 7:02. I guess either way I was right about on my goal. That was was enough for 11/102 in my AG and 71/2500 overall. My wife brought my dog, who I was totally happy to see at the finish! Overall, good day.

Time for some RR and some pancakes! I'll right the race report later.

BACK!!

1:55:39.  PR for Irongirl Triathlon (800m/22.5k/5k...the swim is a little longer than most Sprint triathlons) by 12 minutes. Definitely some room for improvement, especially the swim. :-P

Swim - slightly sucky, but whatever. That's what I get for not swimming! :-)

Bike - FASTEST BIKE SPEED for all of my triathlons! 22 minutes PR! Whahooooooo!   Now it's time to get some TLC time with learning how to use aerobars!

Run - Hilly...yuck. Didn't do as well as I wanted, but PR'd exactly 1 minute for a triathlon 5k. I think the hills kind of killed it a bit.

Best of all - I did NOT get CLOCKED in the head nor suffered from calf issues that I've had the past two years' Irongirls!!!

RR is being typed up as we speak.
