Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Well it's Saturday evening - did I take it easy aftger yesterday's efforts - er no. So here's how my day went. drove to pool - 1.5km swim - first 400 at RPE 7 and was done in 7mins - very happy with that. 1.5km took 30mins all up. Drove to cycle track in my tri suit - my second outing with my clipping in business (should be called crippling in!). Anyway I'm great at clipping in - off I go, it's a great track about 2km with some badass incline where there is always a mean headwind - a good fast section too where you hit about 45kph before a turn and a pond!!! so half way round I thought, okay try and stop and clip out. Unlipped left foot as practised on trainer, hit the brakes and then instead of putting left foot down attempted to put right foot down which was still clipped in - gracefully landed in a heap below my bike! My first stack! Now if that had been on the road I would be under a car! That's why I use the track anyway, back on the trusty steed I got and vowed every lap to stop and unclip at the same point (so as not to get a phobia) - all good, I did it every time perfectly - okay it's far from elegant but it's better than it was! Other new things I did today, managed to drink from my bottle while moving! Also managed to peel and eat a banana while moving! Total session 50km in 2 hours. Hopped (staggered) off the bike and set off for a 30min wobbly run/walk. Done - about 4.5km didn't measure it, I just ran round a footy pitch! That my fellow manatees was an awesome session! I particularly enjoyed the bike which is the first time I've used the word enjoy and bike in a sentence. PROGRESS!!! And BIG THANKs to you all who think my 3km squad sessions are freaky! It's just what we do! Good luck to anyone racing this weekend. I'm off to have my 'tea' (dinner for the non Anglos!) Tomorrow just a 30min recovery run along the beach and put my legs in the ocean DIVINE. Yanti - stay well. Artemis - awesome name - get as much sleep as you can! I'm wearing the full wetsuit on Sunday at the Icebreaker triathlon, cause the water will be in the low/mid 50s (brr). At least the forecast calls for sun and 70s! I still say this will be the best way to spend my 36th birthday (and yet I still claim I am turning 25...go figure.)---also, its going to be a day off of work! I read all the posts of today and yesterday, but I admit it, I am just too sleepy to write anything coherent tonight. Goodnight all! Good luck Sunday! |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD enders_shadow - 2012-04-13 5:35 AM Hey all - peekaboo...been a crazy couple of days... Tuesday, when I tried to run, my knee hurt - boo! Wednesday, my husband's uncle died; long expected & not terribly sad (given his state), but it turned the week into kind of a whirlwind, trying to get him back to Michigan and cover all of the other activities here at home with 1 parent...our lives are not well-scheduled for single parenting! Last night was a celebration dinner for my getting tenure (at the university with the deans, provosts, etc.) - the food was gross, the only thing worth eating was the dessert, and I had a little too much wine - came home with an awful belly-ache (I assume because I'd been staying off the grain & sugar & last night that was most of what I ate!) Maybe this is a good way to get my knee rested (because I'm not terribly patient) - I won't be able to get my long run in until Tuesday morning (vs. Sunday) and my short runs are going to be sketchy until hubby gets back. I'm sorry about your husband's uncle. Also sorry about the bad food, but congratulations on tenure! |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD ukweeble - 2012-04-14 3:39 PM Better than a buffet, you order off the menu, anything you want, as often as you want, and it is all cooked fresh each time. There were ten of us celebrating my sons new job and after we had wrecked two huge mixed starter platters, we just ordered two more as they were so good. After allowing a little time for digestion, with everyone feeling full, we went on to order 13 main courses plus chips and rice, after which we re-ordered a couple more of our favourites. The mussels in green pepper and black bean sauce were awesome. Got to get ready for coaching now. ooh, so excited. And slightly worried as the timetable has a 2 hour swim session at the end and i can only swim for 20 minutes. Hope it's a misprint. You and I MUST go eat together sometime ... you saw the St. Regis brunch debacle, yes? Same type of 'buffet,' where we ordered the entire 7-page menu and yes, some favorites again ... I think I went through several dozen courses, including ... I don't know how many mains. Mains meaning including carb and veg I think the final dish count was over 40? It's all fuzzy ... Well, you should be getting back from the coaching session now, I hope it went really well! I'm sure the 2-hour swim session is a lot of tutelage in between so you should be fine. Ah, please post if you are still alive and conscious, that at least is important to me |

Master 2770 Central Kansas | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD TriAya - 2012-04-13 9:10 AM Focusing on breathing in swimming seems to have beneficial effects on all the aspects of swimming in training, and, as Salty referred to with "yoga breathing", is extremely helpful in keeping calm in OW race situations. P.S. That strength routine looks OWIE--well done! I use my "yoga breathing" for just about everything I do, but especially for swimming. Even when I'm cycling or running, however, if I feel that I'm tightening up or 'gasping' for breath, I try to breath in and out through my nose for a few breaths to slow things down and relax. I send more kudos on that strength routine. You are a machine! Edited by KansasMom 2012-04-14 8:40 AM |

Not tropical, but beautiful nonetheless... I love New Mexico. I've only been through once, this Christmas, but it was so beautiful. As I grow older, I am becoming more of a desert/plains person. I love the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) changes in the landscape. |

They got shelled for 7 runs in the first, never recovered. During all that I was hammering away on the bike fighting the KS winds. I was pleasantly surprised with my average speed given the winds. A good ride for me and my legs were fried after that ride :P Good luck on your races Felicia and Claire! Good job on the ride. We drove up through Overland Park yesterday afternoon, and it was windy. I had a hard time keeping the car on the road. A trailer ahead of me for part of the time wasn't keeping it on the road. He was all over the place. |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD OOOOH we are posting hot coach as well as puppy pics now too? OH YES! THANK YOU JO! Sluuuurp ... please--even if the person isn't YOUR coach, or even a coach of anything resembling tri or its sports ... I call that INSPIRATION and MOTIVATION! Okay, so both do happen to be my coaches, but I will happily provide many more pics of other gorgeous coaches ... For our wonderful lady-loving Manatees, that's Miss Sheila Taormina, who is probably history's greatest athlete. Four Olympics, three different sports, Olympic champ in one, world champ in another, ranked at one time top 10 in the third. KA-RAZY!!! Also the nicest person in the world--lady of deep faith and charity. For our wonderful man-loving Manatees, that's Monte. He's not history's greatest athlete, but he might be one of the greater athlete-humanitarians. Swimming resume is much like van Wisse's, but he has no formal coaching experience except for me. Mainly because I'm the only one crazy enough to want to do the types of things he's done, but dumber. We're very alike, which scares a lot of people, as it should. He also struggles with a debilitating chronic illness, which has made him a really good adviser for me to have, if I listened to him. Another run on another day... BTW, my wife (who is celebrating her birthday today) came in this morning around 7 am and said to me "It is a beautiful morning, you need to go out for a run." I had just finished a bowl of cereal and wasn't planning a run today. So, I didn't run. The fact that she knows how much I have come to enjoy running (which 2 years ago would NOT have happened) is a testament to our ability as people in a relationship to grow with one another. And a testament to her awesomeness! I hope she'll stick around for another 25 years She is my greatest blessing. Enjoy whatever your day has in store for you, and mostly the people in your life! |

Maybe I'll just take a few pics at Folsom Lake tomorrow.... Busy day today! I'm finishing a HUGE exhibit remodel (repaint/structure-building/adding & removing tree limbs/adding plants/vines) this afternoon, and cleaning out a tortoise house plus all the usual animal care stuff! Good times! Then a quick little bike/run to get early butterflies/excess energy out (I'm betting there is a lot of the excess energy today---WAAAAYYYY to hyper this morning--at least I entertain my coworkers this way....well, at least I think they are entertained....hmmm.). Beyond that, a bit of cleaning around the house, my kitties have been making multiple messes that I have thus far ignored...its time to remedy that. Oh well, back to work time! |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty MAD MANATEES Mentor Group - FULL POD Did a test run this morning to see how my hurting hamstring is coming along; it's better, but I still had to stop after 1 mile. When it is finally healed enough to run, it will probably take me forever to get back to long mileage. Very frustrating. On a more positive note, swam 3500 yds with my masters swim group this morning. The workout called for some IM swimming to include fly! Usually, we can opt to switch the fly to free, but not this time. OMG, keeping myself from drowning turned out to be a really good workout I was told my stroke looked pretty good, but I was not getting the 2d kick done properly (or at all). When we were told we could not switch out the fly, I made the mistake of telling the coach he better not be thinking of filming me. Of course, he hadn't considered that until I mentioned it and of course he then proceeded to do just that with the threat of posting it on his facebook page. I think it will be posted as a cautionary tale. |

I did a test outing today to see if my new-felt health would hold up ... FAIL. I was halfway through my list at the grocery store when I realized I needed to head home, ASAP. That was my big outing of the day. I seem to be out of toilet paper and ice cream ... drat. Keep being kind to your hammy. Soon, soon. |
