Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Feeling like a human being again and heading off to the Billy the Kid tri shortly. I even practiced transitions this morning! Psyched to wear my new (used) aero helmet--it makes me feel fast like a super hero! Or a sperm cell. Fort Sumner's, in southeast New Mexico, claim to fame is that it is where Billy the Kid was reportedly shot and killed in 1881. Believe me, there is otherwise no reason to go there. Fort Sumner itself has a population of about a thousand. The nearest "big city" is Santa Rosa with a population of 2,856, which might make Ft. Sumner officially 60 miles outside of nowhere. It is a hot, flat, desert, with some small lakes in the middle of it. This weekend's events benefit the school athletic programs, which is pretty cool because something like 90% of the kids participate in at least one sport. What the heck else are you going to do???? But the kids and parents volunteer at the tri and I love supporting them. Have a great weekend, everyone! Can't wait to hear about Kansas. Jaime |

And pack extra bags in your tri bag - either garbage bags or I like those zip loc extra big (I mean really big) bags. Hope the weather is on your side! Stay safe and dry. |

Veteran 458 Greensburg, PA | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed I have had a bit of a crazy week. I have been on vacation, intending to do a bunch of yard and house work. I got some done, then got rained out the past 2 days. I had a long bike scheduled last weekend that got cut to only 30 miles when one of the riders fell and we couldn't go on. But, since I was off work, one of the other girls and I did it on Tuesday morning and got in 60 miles. I have been going to PT (for my PF and achilles) twice a week. Every session up to today has been really easy. Today was crazy hard and I am really feeling it tonight. I can't even walk up the steps without my achilles hurting. Of course, I have a sprint scheduled for tomorrow. Between the new pain and not having ran at all for 2 weeks, and only minimally before that, I am not sure how it will go! I will let you all know if I can finish! But, the most exciting (or maybe I should say frightening) thing is that this weekend is 20 weeks out from B2B!! I met with my trainer this week and got my first week's training schedule! I am not sure how things will go with the running, but I am so ready to officially get "started"! Any tips for me?? Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. Be careful and have fun! Karen |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed good luck tomorrow Karen, and sorry about the PF. You might want to consider committing yourself to walking the run for this sprint. then you can really push yourself on the bike without worrying about pacing for the run. if your feeling okay later, turn that walk into a run. either way, have fun! So we have one more racer for tomorrow. My son's Saturday little league game just got called for rain. And you all know what doesn't get called for rain....tri's. I'm doing a local charity sprint that I did last year. I flipped a coin to decide between the race and a solo long trail run, and let the fates decide. I'm not sure what a coach would think of that as a way to approach a training plan... |

I hope those in Kansas miss what looks like some nasty weather coming through the heartland!! Picked my bike up from a tune up and chain replacement and learned I hadn't been keeping the head set covered enough. Had to replace the bearings and rebuild it as it was all corroded. Looking forward to a nice long ride on it tomorrow! For this morning it is a run then swim!! Have a great weekend! |

Member 258 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Waiting to hear how everyone did in Kansas...hope you all dodged the nasty weather. We got stormed on the night before our tri (I felt bad for those in tents!) but we did well in our little camper. I got third overall! My bike is still weak, despite a lot of focus on it over the winter. I'm thinking about dropping a swim day and adding a 4th bike workout to my weeks. Opinions? In my (small) races, I usually finish 3rd or 4th on the swim, 1st on the run, and 5th or 6th on the bike, so it seems like I could get more bang for my buck there. I've already scaled back on my run volume without too much impact. Of course I've been working all winter on the bike without much change in my results, so maybe not.... Jaime |

Hello All, We are here in Kansas and watching the wind blow the trees. Because of the weather, IM is allowing us to rack our bikes in the morning. We are supposed to have some weather tonight but it is supposed to be clear in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed! Carla has been battling a hip injury and has decided not to race tomorrow. She will be out there spectating and has purchases some new running shoes as she plan to do her own event tomorrow. She will fill you in Just hoping to make the cut offs. Thanks for the well wishes. |

Extreme Veteran 601 Cold Spring, NY | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Nice racing Jaime. I'd give biking advice if I was a better cyclist :-) My sprint went great and had a lot of fun. since it was only a 500yd swim (if that) my goal was to push that and the tranitions. It felt like a good time to try things that scare me at bigger/more important events. a bad swim can ruin my day... so i went all out on the swim, pre clipped my shoes, all the crap i see faster people doing, and it went pretty well. i dont have splits yet, but there was only one wave and when I got to T1, there were still a lot of bikes racked. plus i didnt pass too many people on the bike and run, and still took 5th overall and 1st in my AG, so the swim must have been way better than usual. plus i felt supercool mounting and dismounting barefoot :-) Good luck in Kansas and elsewhere everyone! Carla - you have an amazing attitude and spirit! hope your new shoes give you wings.... |

Jaime I certainly don't think that would hurt at all Jaime, overall you would get more bang for the buck by improving your bike speed and endurance. Maybe every other week, or 3rd week you do the swim instead. Congrats on your race! |

Thanks for posting Carla! I hope all your races went well today! I am looking forward to hearing about how it went. I did a long (85 mile) ride with some friends this morning and early afternoon. Took our convertible with Connie to a local winery to enjoy the outside a little. Great day! Unfortunately things didn't end well, which if you have been around is easy to figure out if I am posting at this hour. Wound up in the ER with a sick relative. I will fill in the details some more once I have processed what has happened myself. |

Bill--Good job on pushing yourself & doing the shoe thing, I don't think I could ever do that! How was your son's race? Carla & Kathleen--It was so nice to finally meet you both! Overall, I'm happy I ended up doing the race. I'll try & do a race report soon. My spot in transition was right next to the pros, which was cool. I didn't bother them, but made my husband take a few pictures of Crowie & the others. The swim was fine. I'm still getting used to swimming in a wetsuit (I think I'm on of the few that prefers not to wear it). The bike was good (for me), I was much more comfortabe on the bike & flew down the hills, but really need to work on my climbing!! I tried to get my mental game on for the run, & lasted about 1 1/2 miles before I fell apart. I wasn't tired, hot, sore, I just didn't want to run & wanted to be done. I finished, but nothing like I know I'm capable of. I still beat my time from last year by 16 min (but the conditions were worse), but given everything that has happened recently, I'm counting it as a win. Brian, we missed meeting/racing with you, hope you are continuing to heal. Off to spend some family time in KC. |

Member 18 | Subject: RE: kenj triathletes in training - IM and HIM focused - Closed Hey everyone. I know I haven't been on in a while, and unfortunately I haven't been able to keep up with everything thats been going on with all of you. I've been doing a bit of traveling lately, and have been pretty much been completely busy for the past few weeks. That being said, I did have my first race of the season yesterdeay, so I at least wanted to give and update as to how it went. To start off, I somehow injured my knee last Sunday. Had a 14 mile run, felt great the whole time, and felt fine afterwards. However, come the next morning, there was a pain from the back of my knee down into the top of my calf. I ended up not running at all this past week, and I have an appointment to have it looked at this afternoon. Hopefully it's not something major and I can continue with my training for the Musselman in July, but it does have me a little worried. Well, back to my race It was a smaller, local sprint put on by the YMCA that I swim at. Having not run at all in the week prior, I wasn't really sure what to expect, but it actually went relatively well. I ended up 34/188, and 2nd in my age group. I was a little disappointed because i missed winning my age group by 13 seconds, but my knee was still giving me some issues on the run, so I just couldn't push and catch the guy. But given that it was really just a tune up to start the season, overall I was pretty happy. |

I think to some extent that happens to a lot of us on the run in these longer races. Especially when we are dealing with other issues, whether it is the weather for the race or distractions outside the race. That is where your mental training and focus is more important than your physical training. Macca has had some great stories in the Tri magazines about this. I look forward to reading your race report. |

Your knee issue sounds like it might be more of a hamstring or ITB issue, but that is just from the issue I had from a couple of years ago training for a marathon. About 5 weeks or so till Musselman! Seems like it is coming quickly. |
