Got an all clear from the Dr. Yesterday... Not that I was having problems, but my wife made me get a routine checkup (and a TDAP before baby gets here). Now I'm targeting a Tri in September, but don't know if that will happen or not due to the cost of travel (even just a few hours away for the weekend) so I'm Planning on July being a Bike focus month before jumping back on the swim and run training wagon.

Also, baby update! She is healthy and we are expecting her any time now. She is due July 17, but we would be thrilled if she came a little early As of yesterday we have all the essentials (and much much more) as wel as lots of pink clothes from the baby shower... Not to thrilled about all the Fru-Fru frilly girly stuff, but I guess I'll have to get over it huh?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend and staying safe on the roads!

-Nathan

I got in a nice kinda/sorta brick yesterday.  Did about 20 miles mostly Z2 with some Z3/Z4 on the climbs, then a quick 2-mile run with some strides to wrap up the week.  Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

My daughter loved everything pink for years. Then one day, shortly after her eighth birthday, she informed us that pink was too 'girly' and that she wouldn't be wearing it any more. She was true to her word and now her main color seems to be navy blue. They are always doing things to surprise you.

Congratulations. An unbelievably exciting (and exhausting) time in your lives. But worth every second of lost sleep

The other question that will need to be answered, will she be into dolls or stuffed animals?  So many exciting things about to happen in your life!

Rene, thank you! Thank you for checking on me as well. That's always a pick-me-up. Love that video. I laugh every time I see it!

Jason, enjoy the 3 weeks of semi-rest! Hope the back isn't giving you a hard time.

Suzy, excellent race, lady! So good to see you at it again.

Steve, awesome week of running! I haven't seen 20 miles a week in a long time. I'm super slacking.

Nathan, it's good to know that you shouldn't have any problems with training. So exciting to have a baby on the way! As for pink, my 1st daughter won't have anything to do with the color, but she is my girly girl. She likes to get pretty and wear pretty things, just not pink. My younger girl is all about pink and sparkles, but she's my rough girl. She's loud, she's rowdy, she's a hot mess, but she's pink and sparkly! I didn't have a hand in either girl's love/hate for the color.

No races this past weekend, but two soccer games. My futsal (a form of indoor soccer) team took champs last night, so super proud. Hoping to get some good training in July.

Here are a few pictures from the race the other weekend, Rene! It's beautiful course. In the last picture, the island you see across from the start is the one we swim from for the 2.5 mile Cocos Crossing (swim)! The bike and run course were the same, pretty much. The scenery made the work a liiiiittle easier.

That's awesome Nathan! Enjoy every moment for in a blink of an eye she will be all grown up. My baby girl will be a college senior in the fall, seems like such a short time ago we were bringing here home for the first time.

Blanda, fabulous pics as usual.

Only three DAYS off, not three weeks. Although three weeks might be nice right now

I actually ran hills again yesterday in Providence. Nothing too vigorous, kept the pace reasonable, but the hills are impressive around the Brown campus.

Blanca...gorgeous views as always. Do you ever get tired of them?!

Easy day for me...dogs are walked & getting ready to do my Piyo (Pilates & yoga) workout before heading to the chiro. Will be a gentle day post adjustment.

The water was like a mirror before the start. Swim was wonderful. Clear and calm. Only problem was jelly fish. Had a few stings. :/

Blanda-love the pictures!

Ok gang, we are approaching the end of June. For some that is just the beginning of the season and for others they are right in the middle of race season. So, at whatever point is applicable for you, are you pleased where you are in your training/racing at this point of the calendar year/season?

Looking ahead to July....can we each set a goal to hold ourselves accountable to for the month. Can be an aggressive goal or something relatively easy. Doesn't have to be anything complicated. Maybe swim 3X week or the same with bike and/or run. It could be a specific race goal or anything tri related. I'm throwing this out there but have no idea what my response would be. Hope we can set some good near term goals.

Blanda - those were great pics...sorry about the jellyfish (we call them "sea nettles" here in B-more).  Those stings are awful sometimes.

After a day off yesterday lying around the pool having an adult beverage (or two, or three, or...), back at this morning with a little run speed work:

1.2 mile WU
2 x 0.5 miles @ T pace, about 1.5' jog RBI
3 x 200M hard (under R pace, so about 6:00/mile), 300M jog recovery
1.2 mile CD

Just under 5 miles total.  This is probably my favorite workout of the week.  I love track work; done properly it's a great training session, and I really like running fast.  :-)

I'll get in swim with my daughter this afternoon...shooting for about 1500M or so.

Question #1:  I just came out of a mini recovery period after my early season 'A' race on May 31st, so June was a little low on training but I still got enough in for maintenance.  My season totals so far:

Swim: 39h 00m 34s - 89057.41 Yd
Bike: 66h 15m 59s - 1171.59 Mi
Run: 62h 46m 35s - 389.42 Mi
Strength: 71h 54m (probably 2/3 of this is Bikram Yoga, so no I'm not throwing around iron quite that much)

I've already surpassed my run and swim totals from last year.  My race results have been great:  two run PRs at 5 and 10K, plus I had a good Oly race.  I couldn't be happier with my training and racing so far.  I hit a little patch in May where I was feeling pretty fatigued but once I started tapering I felt great by race day.

Question #2:  I'm going to do exactly what I did last July, get my a$$ on my bike and do at least 10 minutes of core work a day.  I'm also going to hold steady around 18mpw running and get in 5Ky/week swimming.  I'm all over the place about what to set up for races for the summer/fall.  I'm definitely running a 10K on Friday and a Super Sprint August 10th, but I'm debating doing a HIM in early October and a HM two weeks later.  I could also do a sprint that first weekend, too.  Choices, choices...just happy to be training and healthy!!!

Have a great week...there is NOBODY working this week.

Me!  I raced the hilliest sprint in Wisconsin!  I won my AG!  Good swim (2:07/100), really good bike (18.6mph) and of course my run suffered (8:44) after being off for three months.  Happy!

Off to Minocqua.  More later!

Awesome job!!

Jason - I went to school in RI but just North of Providence. I know what you mean about hilly - you don't expect that! Once you leave Providence it's all flat LOL

Nathan - so exciting!!!!!! Just a waiting game now!!!

Blanda awesome pics as usual!

This weekend totally sucked Woke up Saturday with a headache that quickly turned into full blown migraine. I spent most of the day Saturday sleeping and didn't start functioning until around 4. Sunday the headache was gone but I had that fuzzy head feeling. BLACH. My training was going so well too - and then it just got BLOWN out. I'm hoping today to get an easy 20 miles in on the bike and hopefully be back at it tomorrow for realz.

Thanks for those that stopped by my log

Despite this weekend, I think I had the best numbers to date. We'll have to see after tonight!!

So I'm back at work today (and you should be too - GET TO WORK!)

And have a great day!

Great week, Steve.  My experience is that you will start to see some real run gains once you get upwards of 30 mpw, but like you mentioned it's tough to get the other stuff in.

Blanda, thanks for posting those pics. Amazing views as always. I love the swim shot.

Randee,  sorry to hear about your headaches. Are you feeling better today?

Nancy, how is your back?

Mike, I wish I could help you with the run advice.

I'm trying to get everything ready for our "trips" over the next two weeks. Leaving tomorrow to do a girls training camp in Tucson. Then I'll be back for a day before going to Calgary with my husband on a business trip. Both trips should be a lot of fun.

After beating my head against the wall last week during swim practice things finally started coming together today. I've been struggling with motivation and a few other confidence issues related to  s/b/r training these last few weeks. I'm hoping that training with friends in a new environment will help me to get past this bad place.

EDIT:

While I was writing my post Randy sent this inspire...

Things are certainly  better than this time last year.....right?

Thanks Randy for putting everything into perspective. YES!!! Things are a lot better than they were this time last year when still recovering from surgery
Went back and checked my log from last year.. This is what I was doing a year ago and thankful to be able to run:

5x(5mins run, 2mins walk) also riding at 140-150 watts.. Yes, things are a lot better this year.

Wow summer gets busy. You'd think since my wife is out of school now and doing stuff with the kid all day that they would be too tired on the weekends and want to take it easy. Nope. I think they conspired all week to find stuff to do for us on the weekend. Luckily we went to the beach one day and I got to swim for a while, which was my only workout of the last week since my knee got kind of tricky on me.

I'm ok where I'm at right now. The last week has stunk with lack of training and the potential for an injury but I put in a good winter and pretty much did exactly what I wanted at my first Oly. For July I just need to get back to being consistent. I know the month is going to be insane so it's just a matter of carving out whatever time I can find. My goal is simply to do something every day. S/B/R or strength. Work is crazy, the kid is 3 and growing so fast I don't want to miss this summer with him, so I'll take it to early mornings and late nights and try to stay on track the best I can.

That recovery training looks eerily familiar!  Have a great time on your trips!

Blanda, I want to live where you do.  Holy Cow, that swim shot is inspiring!

We're at our place in Northern WI all week and while warm, it is so windy we can't even take the boat out!  Boo-second day in a row.  As a bright spot for my month, I have been able to run 65m and have improved my swim pace per hundred by somewhere between 5-10" depending on the day!  Still a long way to go, but happy with the progress.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. I never tire of the beauty of where I live. Politics? Yes! Never the sunsets and rainbows though.

Jason, oops! I imagine 3 weeks would drive you bananas.

Goals for July:

My training partners, who are traveling at the moment, and I are doing a 100 mile (run) challenge. It's to help us stay at least cardio fit while we're separated. They both are where biking and swimming are difficult.

Swim 2x a week and bike 2x a week. For biking, one ride work on climbing, and the other distance.

Today I hope to get a swim and a run in.

Happy new week and month of training!

XX

That recovery training looks eerily familiar!  Have a great time on your trips!

Blanda, I want to live where you do.  Holy Cow, that swim shot is inspiring!

We're at our place in Northern WI all week and while warm, it is so windy we can't even take the boat out!  Boo-second day in a row.  As a bright spot for my month, I have been able to run 65m and have improved my swim pace per hundred by somewhere between 5-10" depending on the day!  Still a long way to go, but happy with the progress.

Sounds familiar to me, too.

Sept 2011:  Yay!!! I got over 100 watts on the bike!!!
Nov. 2012:  Yay!!!  I ran 6 minutes today!!!

Blanda, your pictures are amazing-as usual!

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

Individuals are just that, individuals and need individual programs. However, with a group the size of yours, it may be difficult for your coaches to do 25 individual workouts.
