I took a day off yesterday and it was GLORIOUS!  Tony and I got massages, lounged by the beach, did a little shopping, and then lounged at home while watching Shark Week!

I also pulled the trigger and registered for my first 70.3 - the Great Illini - which seems weird it's my first HIM considering I've done an IM already... and I also *may* have bought one of the Betty Designs tri kit that I've been coveting...  just maybe.

Congratulations on your first HIM. I'll be interested to hear how different it is to race it vs the IM. You really had no choice but to buy that tri kit, it is too cool. I bought a new pair of running shoes, can't post the pick for some reason, but they are black and pink. I'm not really a pink person, but actually like the look. I also need to buy a new pair of Hokas. I like buying things from amazon, with one click the item is purchased and you don't feel like it cost anything !
The only bad thing about amazon is how long things take to get here. Sometimes I so wish I lived in the US. I suppose it could be worse I could live with Yanti and then mail takes FOREVER to arrive.

So...almost 65mi ride yesterday morning.

DH was super NOT feeling it. For a few minutes I thought we were going to scrap the ride.
Lots of "wildlife" on the road. Dead snakes, toads, HUGE green caterpillars, lizards. Cloud cover the whole time but it was humid.
Took our long extra town loop and made it longer by riding through the "historic" part. I think that's just a nice way of saying empty and deserted. Love the old brick/adobe buildings, but there's just nothing there anymore. Kinda sad.
Stopped at BK on the way out for OJ and French toast sticks (I have a thing for them).
Headed west for home and right into a headwind. Blech  30mi of it.  A little demoralizing to be pushing and barely making 13mph...so I gave myself a break and stopped pushing at about 15mi to go. At 8mi we realized that our second stop hadn't been close enough to home and our water was too low. Spent 10min riding around the local college campus looking for a water fountain.
After a refill and getting out of the wind for a few minutes, we felt better and I picked up the push again.
4mi from home and the wind got us again. THAT was painful.
Pretty tired after this one, but on a positive note legs weren't as sore and I didn't feel the need to ice my knee.
Really sore left shoulder though. Anyone else have such long ride issues? Did you find it to be a tensing problem or a position one?

Update on my No sugar no grains - the weight appears to be falling off.  I love it!

I wish I trained as hard and as long as you do!  You are killing it - keep up the great work!

I agree, they're not going to be for everyone. Running warehouse has them and since they have free shipping and free returns I recommend buying from them if you go the online route.

Does anyone else ever get a massive amount of sleepies (aka eye boogers) after a really tough ride and / or run brick?

After my long run, long ride, or long brick days my eyes seem to go into overdrive on making eye boogers.  My eyes also get very heavy and hard to keep open.  I know that I need to take a nap - and sometimes I do.  But sometimes I can't sleep, so I will sit and rest in my recliner while watching a little TV for about an hour.

The other day this happened, after I had an exceptionally tough ride / run combo.  Since I couldn't sleep, I decided to take an ice bath.  While sitting there in the cold water - I tried to read, but my vision was so blurry I could hardly read.  I had to keep blinking and picking eye boogers.

Anyone else every have anything similar happen?

If you go to slow twitch and do a search for Hokas you will see lots of conversation about them. They have a huge fan base including lots of people who were not able to run any more because of the pounding their bodies had taken over the years made running a no go. You will also, find people who tried them and didn't like them. I've been using them for 8 months and love them. YMMV.

Wow, great ride. The only soreness issue I have on long rides are a sore neck from being in the aero position. This issue goes away as my neck muscles get stronger. Have you had a bike fit?

Funny I feel like i'm not doing nearly enough then I add up the time and I've done 12 hours - I'm stoked!

Today I feel absolutely spent, I've got nothing - my lunchtime run in zone 2 will likely be a lot of walking to stay in the zone.

Gotta love this training lark!

Totally.  I think there are a lot of people who really love them.  Really glad they are working for you! :)

You guys made me Google Hookas!  Oh wait - it's Hokas!  :)

Looks like another crazy running fad to me (Vibrams).. Ooops - did I just open that can of worms?

I am a believer that 99% of all soreness and pain in the knees, shins, and hips is from poor running form (mainly over striding).

Just for clarification - When I say "over striding", I don't mean Heal Striking (Craig Alexander has a slight heal strike) - I mean heal striking with your foot hitting the ground in front of you, causing a jarring / braking impact that really hammers the hell out of your knees and shins, right up into your hips.

I used to have lot's of pain in my knees - then I video taped myself running - Holy crap what an over strider I was! As a tall person (6'3") I thought that to run faster, I should reach out further with each step.  DOH!  What an idiot I was.  I started focusing on landing my feet below my hips and being more upright while running.  At first it felt like I was going to tip over.  Then I noticed that my pains went away (and my times dropped pretty drastically.)

This info is only from my personal experience and lot's of research.... It does NOT make me an expert by any means, so take that with a grain of salt.

This is very similar to my own experience 'skrat.  My "natural" running stride has a bit of a heel strike and is right on 87spm.  As I have really worked on shortening it a bit, and trying to hit 90spm, I have found that I can keep many running injuries at bay.  I can still get into trouble when doing speed work or hills, so I just try to pay attention to that and not go into the naughty zone.

That's what I thought....

Anyone Else?  Someone surely has massive eye booger output that makes their vision blurry after a hard workout.

If not - I say you are not working hard enough!

Nope you are just weird.
Do you wear decent sunnies or glasses when you ride and run? It could be that you are getting a fair bit of grit in your eyes and this is what is causing it.
