Heh, all the cool kids are doing it. We're at the beach, Pacific Ocean, for a couple days, though there will not be any OWS here. Just relaxing - have a good week

I get to service runners both coming down and up State Street so it is berserk (in a good way).

John, are you really going to let this go?  Or did you miss it?

Been meaning to post ... Check out this video from the 09 Lifetime Fitness Triathlon.  These guys are simply flying!  My favorite part is at 3:32 when they come off the curb and just drop the hammer.  AWESOME!

ANdy Potts has it up on his blog here,  also has some nice images from his wreck.

If its blocked where you are now try to watch it later.   Its cool.

Question time.  The run course of my Ironman has aide stations every mile and I am already training with the HammerGel brand they carry, but my question is do I bring along my fuel belt?  On the one hand it seems silly to carry the extra weight but then again I don't want to rely on the aide stations for my gels and electrolites only to find they don't have any.  Or worse they only have coffee flavored gels - yuck!  I was thinking of wearing a jersey where I can carry extra gels and electrolites if needed and having more available in my special needs bag out on the course.  What do you all think?  Steve and Ryan, how did you handle run nutrition?  Thanks.

I am anxious to hear how Janet's half marathon went and wasn't there a National's Tri racer this weekend as well?  Do tell........

Me and my guns hustled down to Monona Terrace in the dark this morning.  Some people camped out all night to get a spot.  They opened up two hours early and it is official.  I'm in for 2010!!

I cannot answer as well as Ryan and Steve, but I carry my FB for all marathons.  The reason is I want to drink when I want to drink AND I can never ingest enough fluids on the fly even if I walk through the water stops.  I measure down to the ounce (surprise surprise) when running so carrying is my only option.  As far as gels goes, my aid station let the athletes pick the flavors they wanted when they came by, but if we ran out, too bad!

Congrats Suzy for getting your spot and on your HIM this weekend.  Steve, your fast man!  I still check in from time to time...anyone remember me?

Your going to laugh at this but I had my first Tri of the year yesterday.  I did the Malibu Sprint just for fun to break up the training.  I raced a lot last year and was a little burnt out by the time i got to my HIM in November.  This year I wanted to focus on B2B so I started late My tri season has officially started! Hope everyone is well, Chet

interesting question.  i'm not planning on wearing a belt but i'd like to hear from steve and ryan as well as chet and linda about what they plan on.   looks like there is a bit nutrition talk on the athlete forums on the event site.   have you seen this.

the course drink for switzerland run is blood orange powerade.  so far i haven't been able to find it here in the US

Suzy--- A big Fat congrats!!! Awesome!  You are going to do great, and have a GREAT EXPERIENCE!  You can never replace your 1st experience of running down the shoot as you finish an Ironman.  It is unreal!

Tracy--- I don't remember what Ryan did, but I usually carry my solids (Gels) and thermolytes in the pocket of my tri top and rely on the aid stations for water, soda, chicken broth, and gatorade.... I don't carry anything on my waste.  If anything maybe carry a water bottle in your hand, and you can refill, but everyone has their own methods.  You really need to rely on what works for you.  I don't even really like the race belt around my waste (that is why I wear it really low).

With aid stations every mile, it's tough to think about carrying more nutrition, but I also believe that because nutrition is sooo important for long course racing, I think it makes a lot of sense to bring along what you feel comfortable eating/drinking. You have to be ok with the flavors so you'll take it! It's good that you're training with the HammerGel so you're used to that composition (all long-chain malto with dextrose)... I think that's smart.

For Lake Stevens, I brought along a gel flask filled with Roctane (I squeezed in 4 packets with a little H2O for dilution) and ran with that in my hand. I found that easy to sip from every half mile or so. For my next Ironman, I'm going to bring along two gel flasks and take H20 and/or GE from the aid stations as necessary. My tri suits (Orca or LG) have small pockets, which is key.

As Steve mentioned, I put some thermolytes (Roctane has some potassium in it as well) in an old M&M container. I just stash that in a back pocket.

I don't know that I could do the full FB bouncing around for the full mary; I have the Helium with the two bottles in the rear, and even that can drive me nuts after an hour or two. But as Suzy said, it's important to know what nutrition schedule works for you and then wear/carry/utilize whatever allows you to put that in to play.

As for special needs, I might keep another gel flask in there, just in case, but I certainly wouldn't rely on it as part of my overall strategy. Things can get lost, leak, be mismarked, etc.

Crowie does all of his races with a FB and he goes somewhat fast (1:11 at Muskoka... jeeeez), so it certainly doesn't seem to slow down the top pros.

Thanks everyone. That was the hardest thing I have ever done I think. It was well over the time I was hoping for but I don't care. I made it. I'll post my RR probably tomorrow. Just got home and am going to have a beer and sit on the back deck. Suffice it to say I didn't hydrate or get enough nurishment on  the bike and it cost me dearly in the second half of the bike and the first part of the run.

I am going to go with a Labatt product. Kokanee is for more of us Westerners. Although, he is a transplanted Westener...
I 'll stick with my orginal guess though.
