I vote option 2 == That's you'd have handled it for others -- you should get the same treatment. Don't go beating yourself up over it!

All of us understand!

Dee, would you pleeeeeze go see someone about your shoulder, it has been bothering you for months now! (as you stated)

I asked my doctor, back in... um... November, I think.

She said that it's not rotator cuff, because I have no problem raising my arm. (It doesn't hurt when I do that.) She thought it was tendonitis.

I was supposed to rest it. Which I did.

Of course, as soon as it started feeling better, I started swimming again.

I still think it's a swim technique thing. But I can't figure out what's wrong with the technique. (I'm not crossing midline. I don't think I'm overreaching....)

Maybe I'm just getting old?

D001 - 2008-06-25 8:22 AM As the Challenge organizer, I get people asking me about revising goals due to injury. I evaluate the circumstances, and make a "ruling." But this month, I'm the one having problems. So I'm going to ask YOU guys what you think. Here's the deal: My shoulder has been bothering me when I swim. (This started back around October, because I went all out on a Swim Challenge. My doctor thought it was a tendinitis. However, it's never really gone away.)... I was pretty much OK at the beginning of the month. The shoulder was a little "tweaky" but I figured I'd be able to swim OK. However, for the last 2 weeks, it's been hurting pretty much nonstop. And swimming has been making it worse. It's bad enough that I've been taking ibuprofen for it. And I HATE taking pain-killers! The last time I swam was June 17th. And the shoulder has stayed pretty bad since then. (Although doing some yard work after that sure didn't help.) Stretching doesn't help. Working the opposing muscles hasn't seemed to help, either. So here are the options, the way I see it. Let me know which one you think I should do: 1) HTFU and just go swim until I hit the goal. 2) Prorate the goal. I swam for 17 days out of 30. So drop June 18-30, and reset the goal to 60% of the original value. 3) Drop the last 2 workouts that I had planned for this week, and revise the goal to leave these two workouts out. What do you guys think? I'll go with majority opinion. Dee

Go get an MRI!!! Sounds worse than it was before. RICE Rest, ICE, Compression (which is hard to do for a shoulder), Elevate... If it hurts lying down to sleep, try sleeping in a recliner if you have one, that is the elevate part for the shoulder.  Hope it feels better soon.

Nurse,
Nancy

I USED to breathe on the right side only, and the problem developed in the left shoulder.

Since I thought this might be the problem, I started doing bilateral breathing instead.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to make a difference.

It MAY be that since I'd already developed the tendonitis , well, it may have been too late for the bilateral breathing to help.

Bleh. MRIs are expensive.... And I hate ice.

The Rest is OK. And the elevation. Not sure how to get compression in there though.

I've tried gentle stretching. It feels GREAT afterwards - for about 30 seconds. Then it's not-so-great anymore. LOL

Shoulders are highly overrated.

My knee is fine IF I run barefoot and on the treadmill. So that's what I'll keep doing.

I breath the opposite to you and my right shoulder gets a bit sore, that is when I start the bilat...

Well with my plantar fasciitus(I had a tear)  it wasn't until I stopped trying to run and bike that it got better.  I also took ibuprofen around the clock 400mg.  That is when I joined the swim challenge and rehabbed the foot now it is 98%.

OK, I hit the swim this morning, but sleep was more important than running. Since I'm over on bike and swim, I may take a little run tomorrow (not too far - gotta be ready to race on Sunday) and then still recover run on Monday.

I'll be 110% on swim and bike after the race...so as long as run is close, I'll top 100%.

I rode for 47  minutes--most of it on a street in my neighborhood.  I know it sounds boring as all get oout but I finally got myself to get in the aero bars and stay there for most of the ride.  I got out of aero for shifting and turning only.  That's a first, I've had these bars since Christmas and have only gotten in aero for a couple minutes here and there so the ride tonight is a first.

Yeah, I'm coming to the conclusion that I may need to actually STOP swimming for awhile to let it get better. I've been trying to keep swimming (although with reduced yardage), but maybe it's time to put myself into drydock.

Hm, if I can't swim, what CAN I do? Uh, work on running, maybe?

Thanks for the info on Bio Astin. I'm off to check out the web page.
