Pro 4507 Simpsonville, SC | Subject: RE: Nibbs XIV aka Challenge Chat. Come join us! Morning, Nibbs! I did do my track workout yesterday and it kicked my butt. So I spent last evening sitting on the couch watching The Biggest Loser. I was too tired to type, LOL. Cat, see if you can find someone (chiro, PT, massage) who can do ultrasound or has a TENS unit. Those work pretty good on low back issues. Kristen, at least the icky joint class is over now. Jen, hope you get some good news from the CT scan and glad you are not seriously thinking about racing. Sal, sorry you are still stuck in winter up there. Always glad to see you here in Nibbs even with your busy scheule. Yanti, thanks for stopping by. Getting out of bed is a great step in the right direction. OK. It's shower time or else I will be late to werk. Hasta la vista, Nibbs! |

Kristen, at least the icky joint class is over now. Bah - I have to go again next Tuesday...at least it's only 2 weeks out of the 14-week semester (my colleagues split the other weeks so we only go twice each). But still. Nice workout yesterday - I need a workout that kicks me that good. |

Pro 4507 Simpsonville, SC | Subject: RE: Nibbs XIV aka Challenge Chat. Come join us! I want to bounce this off the Nibbs. April is the beginning of my big build for Mooseman. I am really feeling the stress with all the training, family stuff and work stuff. In 2005, I made a "5 year plan" for triathlons. I knew in 2 years, I wanted to do an HIM and in 2010, the year I turn 40, I want to do IMCDA. So far everything has been clicking right along. But now I am wondering if I should move up the IM to next year. Then I could go back to racing sprints and olys for awhile to be able to spend more time with my family. I don't want to back down next season and still do IMCDA in 2010 because I would lose a lot of my base that I've been working so hard to build. Would you consider doing an IM when you have never done a marathon or 100 mile bike ride? Obviously, I will be doing lots of training, but I don't know. I also know something is going to have to give for me to keep up this level and volume of training. I'm not sure if I can handle it for 2 more years. Thanks for the input. I'm just having one of those freak out OMG what am I doing? days. |

I'm just having one of those freak out OMG what am I doing? days. WOW?? I'm still a newbie (haven't even done my first race yet) But after years of personal training and helping people to their goals and having a family of my own while beginning towards my goals I've established my own PERSOANL OPINION based on MY values... so here it is, take it, chew it, spit it out if you don't like it, we all are different... I feel that unless you are a professional athlete making a living for you and your family, training should be something that you enjoy and enhances your life and doesn't take away from it. Your family is part of your life, so the question is what do you put first... family, self/training, work... that decision must be made by each individual... HOWEVER... I don't think that training should EVER create stress in your life... it's supposed to be our outlet to sanity and health no a hinderance to it.... I know this did not answer your question... but like I said, it's something you can chew on Good luck with your decision |

I'm just having one of those freak out OMG what am I doing? days. I too am wholly unqualified to answer this question...but I just wanted to tell you - I feel for you. I also came into this with a "5 - year - plan"...and I too have looked ahead and thought - heck, why don't I just push it through a little faster. I get what you're saying about not wanting to drop base - and that seems like a good reason. One question - is there any reason to believe that next year will be easier than 2 years re: family life? E.g., I know there will be a year coming up soon when my work load will be less...which is the year I plan on bumping up to a significant mileage (probably a HIM for me). So for me, it makes sense to wait for that year - if every year looks like every year for you, maybe it doesn't make sense to wait? My 2c for what they're worth...which is about 2c. |

Got outside at lunch for a short run and have my bags packed for tomorrows swim pre work and run at lunch. It's supposed to be 75-80 degrees tomorrow, I am not sitting inside all day. Got my bike out for a short ride this evening too--beat listening to Coach Troy--but I could still hear his voice telling me to press it hard cresting the hills. H3ll, it worked to get my azz up them so there's something to listening to his stuff... |

I'm just having one of those freak out OMG what am I doing? days. Ok - can you do an IM next year after completing a half... YES!!! The increase in volume from a HIM to an IM may seem substantial in build weeks but it is not double what you are doing for a HIM - so the question is do you have the time to do one? What/when is the race that you are looking at? From a HIM you are basically looking at around a 1 month recovery period followed by base building and then into a transition/build phase for the race of anywhere between 12-16 (ish) weeks off the base you have already built... I will only ever run a marathong if its in a HIM... and the riding you can build over time so I know you have no worries there! If you seriously want to do it next year I say go for it! |

Thanks for the tip... Im feeling much better today (not 100% by any means but improved on the past couple of days) Its still really sore but Im almost 100% convinced that the heat has made all the difference in the world - I sat with a hot water bottle on my back all day yesterday... so Im guessing that means its mostly a muscular issue... Sitting here at work isnt mych fun but i have ibuprofen which I am yet to take any of today to get me through... I think I need to get a good core strenthening routine, as Ive always had pretty good core strength but I struggled to hold a bridge last tie I tried so that cannot be a good sign for my lower back! |

DO I have time for one, yes, that is the question. I love my training. I love the long, hard workouts. I love pushing my body beyond what I ever thought was possible. But...It's not all about me. Well triathlons are, but I still am mom to two very active young kids. My friend/training partner/boss needs me for lessons and lifeguard classes and guard shifts. My family comes first, always. I am trying to decide whether speeding up the plan by a year would be better for me to sort of return to a sort of normal life in 2010. Or if I should "stay the course" and hit those milestones (like my first marathon and first century) before IM training. |

How about flipping it and doing the IM next year and the century/marathon the year after... Building just one sport instead while maintaining the others is less time consuming so will impact less on your family life so may be easier for you to hold onto with your family life in the longterm... But you will still get to push yourself, see improvements and achieve goals...and when your children grow you will still have your base to go back to IM Have you discussed how your family feels about your training? They probably love having you fit and active and full of energy... So dont feel too bad about it until you have talked to them about the time demands! You could always use the IM as your first goal and then use your bike/run times in that event as the benchmark for building single sports into the future.... does that help or make it more confusing? |
