Silly questions.....what are the stars underneath our names/number of posts in our forum postings? and what do the different labels mean....member, veteran, expert, etc.?

It has to do with how many posts you have made....labels are based on numbers of posts....see mine, I've been on BT long long time...joined week of my first tri 9/04.

I am happy to report that aquagirl went swimming again today. I am actually finding swimming by myself (as opposed to Masters) kinda fun! I do sets of 500m with the tunes in my ears and find that its really not so bad...... I'm feeling very glidey lately. My fab new swim coach is having a personal crisis so no lessons for the next little while.  I am really making an effort to put into practice all the stuff she taught me though.

I've been a real slacker this week.  Went from on track to missing two days in a row, and tonight I'll have to miss the track making that 3 days.

Went to PT this morning, and the verdict is no running for at least a few weeks... which supposedly includes at least the first of my two 10ks coming up next month I'm trying to figure out if doing the races would really interfere with my therapy or not, though.  I might negotiate my doc's blessing for those two days only.  But, that still means my 3x a week run plan including my track workouts are gonna be a bust.

So, I'm going to have to reexamine my schedule and add in more bike and swim, probably yoga and of course daily PT.  I'll be able to start aquajogging soon, but that'll be it.

I know it's the first step toward making my mechanics so much better and pain-free, but I can't help but be seriously bummed right now.

That is not really being a slacker. Get better. Do what you can. I hear great things about aquajogging, if you do it hard it is a great workout and really helps your running.

I'm a visual and hands on learner. For those of you who have bike questions I love this website with many great videos on how to do simple to complex bike repairs and even how to change tires and shares what tools you need and has written instructions as well.

My bike repair class we have learned all about changing tires, tubes, changing chains, cassettes, adjusting rear derailuers ( now I can fix that myself which is my #1 issue I wanted to learn) and next week more wheel stuff, changing brake pads, putting on new bar tape, hopefully pulling bottom bracket off, and truing wheels.

Hello all! Whats on tap today?

I thought I would share a little bit about my current philosophy towards training. When I started running ( not quite 2 years ago) I put a penny in a jar every time i came back from a run. It was a BIG jar. This reminded me that I was a rank beginner and NOT to expect too much from myself and not to compare myself to others who had jars and jars of pennies. As I start to contemplate racing longer distances I find myself thinking about that jar again.....I now look at every training session as a penny. It is a HUGE jar, it will take a long time to fill. That is OK!

Hey all! Sorry I'm not posting here as often as I should; I have been enjoying reading all YOUR posts! I do have a question for y'all...

When you do a several-mile run as a workout, do you RUN the entire distance or is there some walking involved? I understand that I would be walking some, but what about you seasoned runners? And what is the speed difference/distinction in a RUN and a JOG?

Everybody has pretty much said it about the run/walk thing.  I know that the research has shown that overall most people can achieve faster results with a run/walk combo as long as they do it from the beginning of the workout (not start walking only when they get fatigued).  Obviously, that isn't everyone.  I started out at 1:1 (again!!) and I am now up to 3:1 and my goal is to be at 6:1 by the end of the year.  If a race is flat, then I will keep my strict run/walk ratio.  If the race is hilly, then I just go by feel since that's the only thing that makes sense.

Really fast people define "jog" as the speed at which slower runners move.  In my mind, it is a condescending word.  Sure, I am clear that no one would describe the speed at which the Kenyans move as a jog,  but after that ....?  I agree with whoever said that if you are not walking, then you are running and I also agree that a run/walk workout is a running workout.

That looks like a great website.  A few times when I have gotten a flat tire, I will take my bike to the bike shop and then get a lesson and a lot of practice in changing tires.  Then, it will be a really, really long time until I have a problem and by then I will have forgotten.  In my little pack with the spare tube and tools and whatever else is in there (I haven't actually looked in a long time), I do have instructions on how to change a tire.  I think I ripped the instructions out of some bike magazine or something.  I haven't actually tried to change a tire using these instructions, however.

I just joined the LA Tri Club and at least last year (and hopefully this year too) they had a couple bike maintenance clinics.  If they offer one this year, I will make every effort to go.

I think the nerves/panic is just starting to kick in!!!! 11 days to go!

I agree that you will be fine.  You know that the bike and swim and already in the bag and then there's the run that must be survived, I mean completed.  Sure, it will be hot, but it will be hot for everyone.  Depending on how hot and all, can you bring a wet dishtowel or washrag (or something you can easily discard) in an ice chest in the transition area?  Just put it around your neck and cool down yourself through the carotid artery and keep it on the run for as long as it stays cold and then throw it in the next trashbin.  It is amazing how well that works for cooling yourself down.

Good luck and have fun.

That is a really great way of looking at it...no matter if it's swimming, biking or running.  We're all beginners at one time and need to remember not to compare our workouts and splits with folks who have been doing tris for years or are blessed with FAST genes

I encourage everyone after they are taught how to change a tube, do it with the teacher there helping you. Then go home and do it atleast 5 more times within a day or two. I find my hands just know how to do it now. Yet yearly I practice one weekend every spring just to get it down, make sure I have everything I need then have my kids time me...sub 4 minutes I can get it down to if I'm doing well.

Without practicing what we learn it is tough to remember especially sitting on the side of the road, hot, sweaty and annoyed.

Good morning gang, I have been somewhat silent here, but I am still working out. Yesterday, I did the 2walk/8run thing....that is REALLY hard! I have been going one speed. It is funny, you seem to go at a slower pace, because you know you will need to sustain it for awhile. Which is where the walks come in at, they give you that break. The bad thing, is my body did not want to pick it back up again, it felt like the beginning of a run ickys. The cool thing was I did run faster. I will have to work on that a bit. Today was a bike day. I had a serious case of the lackas today, but once I started riding it got better. In the morning I have another run...YIPPIE!! If that was all I had to do, life would be GREAT!
