I'm a bike addict it's impossible not to ride my bike for one day. I go everywhere on my bike! Have a great day JUNE BUGS!!!! That's cool. Do you have a lot of bike paths and such in Greece? We don't have many where I am but I would definitely ride more if it was safer and we had more paths. |

Expert 616![]() ![]() searching for the elusive runner's high! | Subject: RE: June BugsHey June Bugs. I got a long bike tomorrow and then a long run on Sunday. Can someone help me understand the thoughts behind meeting your monthly goal vs increasing the goal and not meeting it? I think I am on track to meet my goal but may be able to get in a few more miles. Should I increase it and risk not making it or play it safe and possibly exceed it by a few miles? I don't want to hurt the team so your suggestions are appreciated. |

Don't feel like you have to raise your goal. I usually don't unless I know I'm going to go way over. |

Expert 616![]() ![]() searching for the elusive runner's high! | Subject: RE: June BugsLast post for tonight... Since this is a RUN challenge, I need some RUN advice from my team. I am getting my mileage in but I am not getting any faster. In fact, in the last 8 months I have gotten a little slower. What should I do besides run more and run faster? I run in the early morning and currently run 10+min/mile when I used to run a 9:30min/mile pace. Yes, it is hot but I started getting slower several months ago so the heat is not it. I start out fine but I seem to lose the rhythm of my breathing after 15 minutes. I have tried to run by RPE and using a HRM but the HRM goes off when I'm not even running hard (10:20-10:30 pace). I have also tried to increase my foot strikes but that definitely tires me out faster. Running is my least favorite but I approach it with a great attitude each and every time and even experienced the "runners high" a few times. I actually started to like running until I started getting slower. Some facts: I am 40+ yr old female. My swim and bike averages have both improved. I got new shoes, I have no injuries and wake up with great energy. I am NEVER sore after a run like I used to be and I struggle to eat the recommended calories for my size but only b/c I don't believe I need 2,000 calories/day. Plus, if my bike and swim have improved, why not my run? I also completed a 3 month "no sugar" challenge and have managed to remove all processed foods and sugars from my eating, although I still enjoy a treat now and again. Six months ago I could run 7 miles in a little over 60 minutes...now it would take me 75 minutes. Do I just keep at it and increase my miles?? Sorry for the long post but any suggestions are appreciated. |

Sorry for the long post but any suggestions are appreciated. What are your running goals as far as distance? Are you increasing the distance with an eye towards a specific type of event or just increasing because you think you should be? I lost running speed when I increased my swimming a while back. I've never really recaptured the speed I used to have, but I can now run longer and run more comfortably at lower HR. |

In my marathon training plan, I have long runs at a slower pace and also interval workouts, hill workouts, and race pace workouts. The faster workouts are a lot shorter. I've heard that helps. I haven't noticed much of an effect, but it's been pretty limited right now. I start doing more of them as my training plan progresses. |

I don't want to hurt the team so your suggestions are appreciated. Well, it's supposed to be a challenge. So don't pick an "easy" goal. But also don't pick one that's going to kill (or injure) you to reach. If you're following a training plan, you can use that number as your goal. If you're on track to meet your goal right now, I'd say to just leave it as is. Later on, if you hit your goal before the month is over, (or get close to hitting it,) you can set a new (higher) goal. |

Pro 4541![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A farming town in MN | Subject: RE: June Bugschartierm22 - 2009-06-11 3:33 PM Ok guys, another bike question. I have a MTB bike and am thinking it would be nice to get a road bike, but money is quite tight. Now, I can get a 74' schwin or a slightly newer fuji both with original parts for free but I'm thinking that the expense in getting them road ready might be too much. Do parts on bikes "go bad" I know for sure they need new tires, or should I just stick with my MTB? As you can probably tell I know nothing about bikes. Using your MTB for tris would probably work. My wife did her 1st 2 tris on a MTB. We just bought her some 'slicks'--MTB tires with no tread and much thinner than normal MTB tires. Check our www.nashbar.com for tires. Probably about half the cost of the local bike shop. I'm thinking the 74 Schwinn is a 1-piece crank, and would be tough to upgrade. I would look into the Fuji. If it's a little newer and has a 2-piece crank and Shimano parts, it's probably worth upgrading. You can order thinner tires from Nashbar sometimes for less than $15 a piece. A new seat for less than $30. If you want to put a little more money into it, you could replace the frame shifters and brake levers with 'brifters' (shifting with the brake levers). Send some pics. I'd be curious to see if the Fuji might be worth upgrading. |

Cut it short and back home with a cup of hot tea. I love to sleep in. AAAaaaahhhhhhh. |

Most run training programs include 3 types of workouts, for example, if you were training for a 10K (6.2 miles): Tuesday: Speed day. Shorter distance, maybe 2-3 miles at a pace about 15 seconds/mile faster than race pace. Thursday: Tempo day. Distance shorter than race distance, run 4-5 miles at target pace. Saturday: Long SLOW distance. Do a distance at or above your target race distance (maybe 6-7 miles) at a pace about 1 minute slower than your target race pace. This keeps variety in your workouts. Check out www.runnersworld.com for some sample run workouts. |
