23 minutes, 5 seconds!!!

Met my run goal by running 3 miles in less than 24 minutes - not super fast, but 13 minutes off of my 5k time last June.  Plus - my Triathlon 10k last summer was 1hr, 10 minutes.  Based on this, looks like I need to set a new goal around 22'30".  Not sure I'll ever actaully run a race at this pace, but it is fun none the less.

Just as bad as I feel when I miss a goal, meeting one feels great.

Bike goal justified  Cool

WOO HOO!! Congrats!

Nice job John!!!  13 minutes off your last 5k is tremendous.  You will be surprised at your pace the next race you're in.  If you did this by yourself, imagine running with a bunch of people with the adrenaline pumping.   Keep setting those goals, it's fun to achieve them.

Have you been incorporating intervals or tempo in your run training?  That seems to be a good way to increase the speed.

Blizzard of 2011 going down as 2nd / 3rd greatest snowfall total recorded.  The thunder and lightning last night at times, now that was something that I can only recall happening only one other time during my life.  Five hours of snow shoveling today counts as my w/o for the day.  Time for a nap.

Had over 3 hours of shoveling today and created a nice big snow pile.  I am 6' 3" so that should give some perspective of how much we have.  I hope this picture works because I never tried to post a picture in a post.

WOWZA!!!! That's great!

Any words of advice on how you achieved that much improvement in one year for us "running challenged?"

For me:  Intervals, some intervals, and when I was done - more intervals.  Keep in mind - long slow distance (LSD) trains you for...long slow distance (go figure).  I made it a point to always do some sprints at a 10+ RPE during each run even when doing LSD (just keep them short so my heart rate does get a chance to eleveate too much).  Real improvement came from winter maintenance program from BT - each session had intervals and some had 10x1 - initially thought it was impossible / killing me but I kept with each one.  Learning how to handle the "pain" again from younger years.  Also - for my current runs I , but keep them short so my heart rate does not have time to maximize.

Sometimes I'd hit max incline on the treadmill and once it stopped moving, I'd hit max speed (12mph) and once it got to that, I'd haul as long as I could before jumping off.  Does not have to be max, just has to be something that pushes you.

Read about Chi running / pose running, watched evolution running video and read book, watched other available videos from library on running form.

Also - my 1st 5k was 2-3 weeks from the couch with general conditioning from hiking / low aerobic activities.

Finally, carrying 15 less lbs. than I was then.

THANKS for the great words of support!!!

BTW:  I got my new red and white S-works Carbon Road shoes in the mail today - the matching outfit is now complete Cool

That's some SNOW! Hope your back isn't too trashed from shoveling. I guess if you needed to ice it, just jump in the backyard.

You'll be quite the fashion plate! Glad that program worked for you. Sounds like a great plan and excellent work on the weight loss.

Too many Manatee Mentor Groups.  Maybe it is time to add a year to these?

Anywho, I lost 2 lbs while running in O-Town.  Check my logs.  I ate & drank way too much, including two hurricanes at Pat O'Briens.

Thanks John,

I have purchased Chi Running and will start reading it tonight.

I did go ahead and slow my run down a bit and feel soooo much less fatigued during the run. Here's hoping the the LSR's translate into an improvement on my time. Going to get used to the distance for a week and then add some intervals. Will try the max incline/speed on the treadmill and see how long it takes me before I crash and burn

How can one go to NOLA and not eat and drink too much, including Pat O'Brien's Hurricanes? Tongue out

Hi fellow Manatees,

I'm back on track. I did my walk/run--6 minutes of very slow jogging.

Hope your day is going well.

Okay Manatees - This newbie needs a training plan lesson.  I'm following one of the BT plans (with some changes to which days I'm doing what due to scheduling, but following the times, etc.).  What I don't really understand is what the most important (and least important) parts are of the plan.  Where am I at most risk for messing something up if I don't follow it closely?  For example, I've been taking swim lessons this month, so I've been adding extra swim time - is this a problem?  Is this a problem when I head into my recovery week next week?  At this point I am just blindly following the plan, I'm trusting in it, but I don't really understand it.  So anyone that would like to give me some lessons/advice, I'll gladly take it.  Thanks!

I am back!
I have been rather "bogged down" with work recently, and just rather stressed.
As such I have been on holiday since monday with familia and have been relaxing and feeling a lot better
Lots of sports to report, but never going to get around to logging it all!
Hope all are well

I'm not an expert by any means, so anyone else please chime in.  I'm just speaking from my own experience.  I had no problem "tweaking" my training plan to fit my needs.  The recovery week is good so your body can rest and heal a bit from the increasing volume of training your doing.  I don't think you're at risk for messing anything up if your swim lesson exceeds what the training plan has you do.  Swimming is probably the one thing you can do more of without injuring yourself.

Training plans are great guides for safe, efficient training for whatever your goal race is.  Trust it.  You'll do great.

Another crappy work week - long hours, stress, yada yada.  Only did my one core workout on Monday - and nothing the remainder of the week.  I get to go pick up my bike from the shop tomorrow after I had it tuned up and a new rim put on the front.  So, maybe I'll go for an afternoon bike ride.

Hey Manatees!! Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. Crystal, hope you are able to get out for that ride. It might help clear some stress out....and check out the new rim.

With the second week of the second month of the year upon us, it's often times when resolutions and goals get tougher and go astray. It's a good time to take a fresh and honest look at our training. Are we where we thought we'd be? Are we still motivated for our first event? Do we have a first event on the books? There's no better motivation than to sign up for an event to keep us focused.

Chime in and let's see where everyone's head is.

I'm off to ride and it's one of the biggest freakin' hills in our county. I hope I don't have to walk it.

I tip my hat to both you ladies... and all the rest of the moms and dads with little kidlets at home! I was a single parent  so I know how hard it can be to find the time for yourselves especially when they are busy kids and work is crazy!!  But what I know for sure... when I finally figured it out... and found the time... it was so worth it!

Keep it up ladies - your doing great!

Wow... how time flies! 2nd week of the 2nd month... yikes!!  Traing is going great... I LOVE being involved with a tri training team. It helps so much with the motivation and pushing me to work harder than I would on my own.  The registrations for events around here haven't opened yet... but I'm keeping my eye on them... I had been hoping to do an indoor "spash n sprint" du in early march but have to be out of town for that one, so the first one around here is in May... which I will register for as soon as it opens (it fills up in hours!!)  So for now... my half in July that I am already registered fori s still my focus and I registered for my first 1/2 mary in April.... but not so sure my running will be there yet for that..... BUT it is my goal!!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and anyone hit by the snowstorm south of the boarder survived it!  We finally had a break in our weather... and went from -46C to -1! Was awesome - but the roads were a mess!! My car looks like I have been 4 x4ing it in the MUD!!! YUK!

Happy hill climbing Lynn!!
