GM everyone! Can we talk about bike cadence? Is there an optimal cadence? Shoukd I be trying to maintain a certain #rpm? I'm not gettomg a clear answer online. Thx!

I'll add I  dont have a power meter, so is there some formula to convert cadence, speed, etc to estimate power?

"Optimal" cadence is usually seen to be around 90 rpm for both the bike and run, although it can vary from individual to individual (personally I think anything between 85 and 95 is fine).  If your lower than about 85 you're liking pushing to hard and going to fry your legs for the bike (note -- doing low cadence work to improve bike strength in training is an entirely different matter).  Go higher than 95 rpm and you're probably not putting enough power into the pedals.

With regard to power -- the question is why do you want to estimate it?  Generally you would use power as a training metric but it only works if its consistent.  Using something other than a power meter is going to result in inconsistent power "readings" so its not going to be super useful.

In general, "optimal" run or bike cadence is a fantasy. In general we will all self select what is "otptimal" and appropriate for our own biomechanics.

First drop dead gorgous day of the outdoor riding season here in the wet great north west.

RTS Training Ride #1.  Hilly course
54.4 Miles.  2696 ft of climbing,  ET 3:01,  Ave 18 mph.

Pulled some long straights at 24-27 on Rin.  Max effort at 33mph in a long bridge over to the next faster group.  All that off season work on the trainer paid off.  Felt very strong.  Did not ride with power.  Disc is on the race bike.  Which is still on the trainer.  Did record HRM but have not processed the data.

Better watch the hydration a bit closer.  Wicked cramp in right Hammie at mile 43, snakebite in the middle of the second to the last climb.  Dropped into bailout gear and climbed out one legged.  Deep fatigue.  Damm Good Workout.

Busy day today! Two soccer games, a birthday party, yard work and worked some more on the potting bench I am building for the wife. I didn't get in a short ZR run today to get the blood flowing for tomorrows GW Parkway Classic 10 miler but did get in 15 min ZR trainer ride and did some stretching. I finally got the trainer up and running after I went and got a new quick release for trainers. LBS was nice enough to give me a free one out of the mechanics drawer

Hope everyone had a great day and hope you have a good one tomorrow! I just hope it is not to hard of a rain tomorrow for the race!

GM friends. Heading to Farmington now for the Route 66 Fat Tire Classic at Winding Trails. Not technical course at all. Just fast and it typically attracts some fast road guys that dont do too much MTB. It's also calling for 2 inches of rain. Bring on the mud. It's possible rain will start mid race. Have a great Sunday.

Good luck today, Larkin and Jeff!

Up for a run and then will hit the trainer for some intervals later.  We have another showing today, and we're looking at 2 houses.  Taking kids out to lunch and then to the Aquarium, so it ought to be a busy, busy day.

Have a great Sunday, all!

Wanted to do a long z2 run yesterday but due to poor planning what was originally going to be 10-11 miles was only 7.5 but felt great.  The poor planning was due to my daughters first horseback riding lesson and my husband going in for his first bike fitting.  After a lot of anxiety my daughter got on the horse and loved it (my daughter is almost 9 and autistic) Very cool to watch her overcome her fears!  My hubby (after A LOT for pushing) got a road bike -Trek Madone and went on his first ride yesterday...19 miles very hilly route (god forbid take the easier route I had directed him on) at 12 mph (he kept disputing the accuracy of this!)..he could barely move last night but was smiling from ear to ear about how much fun it was.  He's always been incredibly supportive and never complains about my 3-4hour rides etc...so I'm glad he's getting some of his own time on 2 wheels.

Bike is in the shop till Wednesday, so long swim set today and some strength training!

Hi guys,

I had my first A race of the year on the weekend, the northern crosing duathlon (8k run, 82k bike, 8k run). I'll have a RR up in a day or 2, but the cliff notes version is it was great conditions, I beat my best time by 14 minutes, the calf felt good during the race, but the day after very tight, so no running this week for me unfortunately.

Good luck today, Larkin and Jeff!

Thanks Jennifer! So the weather held off and actually ended up being a nice race today. I finished in 1:26 unofficially @8:40/mile pace. Fastest race I have done at any distance over 10k so I was pretty stoked. I even finished the last mile right at 8:00/mile, mainly because my friend pushed the pace the last mile trying to beat his PR which we both ended up doing. All this training is really paying off especially the heart rate training which leads me to ask...Now my question is now that I am heart rate training what should I be looking at for race days? Do I just go by feel or should I be in a certain zone. If you take a look at my training log you can see I was pretty high I think especially the last mile.

Yay race week.   :HappyDance:

On a side not I think I'm spending a good amount of my free time trying to get my friend Cassie to calm down.  She is a VERY green swimmer but signed up for the Oly I'm doing this weekend. She is afraid of making the cut off (56 min.).  I'm pretty sure she's going to freak out when she sees how far the boat is off shore when we start.  I keep trying to assure her that 1500m is 1500m whether swimming in a triangle closer to shore or straight in from a boat.

Fantastic job!!  Yay for a new PR  Sorry about your calf, but Carrie is right; you need to rest this week anyway.  I look forward to reading your race report.

Cool pic, too, btw.

Yesterdays MTB Race was good and bad. Rain held off until the end of the race, making for a very fast and dry course.  As mentioned, there is nothing technical about this course at all, a few small climbs, buut no rocks etc.  It's pretty much a sprint. Although, they have added some very tight single track.

Anyway, I felt great going into the race, and for the first lap, I was holding onto 5th or 6th place.  I started very slow, as I have learned in the past not to blow up on these types of races. After the first 20 minutes, I started picking people off that just went off too fast.  I actually think I started second to last place on purpose.  I've been the one in the past to take off too quick, only to get passed early becasue I was spent!

Towards the end of the first lap, I started hearing some loud clicking. Had to stop to see what it was, got passed by a few.  Couldn't figure it out.  It wasn't the derailleur, as it was shifting fine. Long story short, I picked up a piece of chain link fence in my tire, and every turn of the tire it was tapping the chainstay.  Half way through the second lap, I was flat.  I run tubeless tires as well, and it's pretty rare to go flat with those. Just prior to that, I crashed pretty hard, going into a 12" log, just didn't clear it enough, and flew pretty far over the handle bars.  No injuries.  I was able to finish, and stagger to a 9th place finish out of 15 in my age group, and 11th overall out of 39 in Cat 3, all on a flat tire with 3 miles to go.  Ughhh.  I really thought I had a chance at a podium today.

I got a GoPro Camera for my birthday last week, and got some great footage.  Just need to edit it. For some reason, it stopped recording about 15 mins before the crash.  I was psyched thinking I got that on film.
