I am ready for the Holiday weekend. Hard to be motivated at work....plus there is a big soccer game this afternoon that may distract me.

Getting back to my question about the year so far.  I'm pretty satisfied with things. I have done 4 races and feel like they went well. In comparing the 3 sprint races that I did in both 2013 and 2014 I dropped my times 2-3 minutes. Not a huge amount but the difference between finishing a sprint in 1:18 (78 minutes) and 1:15 (75 min.) is almost 4%.  Also, in each of these races my USAT rating for the race was 1-3 points higher. Hopefully, I can continue to show improvement through the rest of my races. I've been really flat for the last week and I'm hoping an easy week will help me recover.

2014 training. Volume is up pretty significantly in the swim and bike as compared to this time last year. Through the end of June I have run 405 miles this year. Definitely down from last year due to some early 2014 injuries that limited my running....but that led to a swim/bike focus for January and part of Feb. Not a bad trade off. This is my 5th full year of doing triathlons and I think I have made most of the "easy" gains that you make by doing something consistently for 2-4 years. The gains are getting harder to come by....but hopefully there will still be gains.

Consistency is key moving forward. Stay consistent my friends.......blatant Dos Equis ripoff

  • sounds like a huge improvement to me!! The shorter the race, the harder to shave off minutes! NICE JOB!

I think I'm back to 98%. At least I hope I am - weekly tri night. I'm going to relay again so all I have to do is bike. And summer has hit here in the northeast - temps in the low 90s should make for a fun little mtb spin in the woods tonight!

I'm taking Thursday off so today is my Thursday and tomorrow is Friday - follow that? YAY 4 days off!!! Of course that little hurricane off the coast of FL promises to bring us some rain.

    Have a great day all!

My goals for July? Get and stay healthy. I think I may be on the right road, but that also means I have to back off and get to the root of things. I may be onto something with my chiro (who I haven't seen in ages). Only time will tell.

That getting and staying healthy, thing, though, requires that I don't screw up the adjustments being made with the chiro and I give my body and muscles a chance to stay put in proper alignment.

Funny thing, though...I'm okay with it. I just want to wake up and feel good.

I'll know more in a week. The good news is that my bacterial infection is GONE, I'm off those horrid antibiotics, my head feels unclouded and I woke up today feeling the best I've felt in a month. Yes, it sort of stinks that I can't go ride my bike, run a few miles or swim today, but I'm staying positive and keeping my eye on the prize (which is to have a body that can handle training consistently).

Been busy at work but been keeping up with the SBR.

Maybe a local 4 mile race on Friday (4 on the 4th).

July goals: increase bike/run time, stay healthy, stay positive.

Did I ever mention how much I love swimming?

Blanda really cool pic! Congratulations on the soccer Champs!

Randy, I am very happy with my training although when I look back at my logs I wish I didn't miss so many days, Life just get too busy sometimes. Ok my goal for July is going to be at least 2 of every sport each week, and 30 miles a week running. Here's to a great month of training!

    Nancy, Glad you feeling better!

Got in a nice Swim session in yesterday, The video that I bought has giving me something to work on besides just swimming for distance. Wish I would have bought it sooner! Great start to the month of July with a brick tonight..

No training so far this week due to medical testing tomorrow. Friday, however, I plan to brick a ride and a run... and Sunday a swim and a ride.

    BTW...
    - We RUN 5Ks, HMs, and Marathons...
    - We RIDE half centuries and centuries...
    - We SWIM for a set time or distance...

So, when we do all three how do you say it?

    - Do you "RUN a Triathlon"?
    - Do you "RIDE a Triathlon"?
    - Do you "RACE a Triathlon"?
    - Do you "DO a Triathlon"?
    - Do you have some other variant?

I have heard the first four, and it got me wondering what is proper... Or IS there a "proper" or "preferred" method?

Been traveling since 6 a.m. (going to Ohio)...Got on plane at 6:45, fired up engine's, shut down engines, took us off plane at 7:30.

Announced only 20 (out of 50) would be going on plane because one engine not producing full power. The other 30 (yours truly includedl) would be traveling to Charlotte 3 hours by bus.

    3 glorious hours on bus...

Now in Charlotte..on standby list for 2:30 flight. Not looking promising.

Just did 10 minutes of vinyasas in the terminal. Received many weird looks. At least I no longer want to smack anyone. ??

I have always said that I "do" triathlons. If talking about it in the past ense I will say I "did" or I "raced" a triathlon. Never really though about it. Not sure what the proper terminology is.

I'm with Randy. "I'm doing a triathlon this weekend or I did XYZ triathlon recently."

Ok gang, we are approaching the end of June. For some that is just the beginning of the season and for others they are right in the middle of race season. So, at whatever point is applicable for you, are you pleased where you are in your training/racing at this point of the calendar year/season?

Looking ahead to July....can we each set a goal to hold ourselves accountable to for the month. Can be an aggressive goal or something relatively easy. Doesn't have to be anything complicated. Maybe swim 3X week or the same with bike and/or run. It could be a specific race goal or anything tri related. I'm throwing this out there but have no idea what my response would be. Hope we can set some good near term goals.

I have my A race, a HIM, on the 26th. So I'm trying to finish my training strong and get to the race relatively healthy. I seem to be in a bit of a funk lately having trouble hitting my training paces and feeling fatigued. Might have to do with the weather or the fact that I haven't been running as much as I would like. I've been trying to baby this Ab thing that I have going on but it's time to make the big push now if I want to run well on race day. It seems to be more bearable if I keep the pace down so I'm planning on keeping my easy/long runs at a slower pace. Still going to do the track workout once a week but sandwich it with rest. Track day this a.m. /no p.m. workout. No morning workout tomorrow bike tomorrow afternoon. That way I can give it a good 36 hours between workouts.

Rene: Haha! I like that. Maybe I'll start replacing the work "run" with "stride". So, today is my "stride" day. Hope the kids are cooperative so I can get out for it.

    Jamie: Thank you!

Nancy: Glad the infection is gone and you're almost 100%. Take care of yourself!

Steve: Thanks! What swim video did you pick up? I sorely need some help with form and technique.

Paul: I've naturally been saying "do", "doing", and "did"... and "done". :D

No racing this weekend for me. Just a soccer game and hopefully a long swim/bike Saturday, and a long run Sunday. Friday the 4th I'm assuming we'll be celebrating in some way.

    Happy 4th of July!

I'm off today. Heading out for a ride with a buddy then off to the beach this afternoon for the weekend.  Hard to believe it is alreday the 4th of July holiday. Hate that we are out of the World Cup but there should be some great games moving forward. Time to start getting charged up about the Tour de France.

Did a group ride this morning. First time riding with this group and there were some good cyclists there. I only knew one guy out of the 10-12 there so I just stayed towards the back and kept up. Eventually a couple guys took off in front and this other guy I was with was kind of struggling, so I stayed back with him but he told me to go ahead and that he knew the area so he'd be fine. By the time I bridged back to the main group, or tried to, they were gone. They took a turn I didn't know about so I got to tack on an extra 5 miles flying around trying to find them. Never did. Found my way back to my car and the guy who was in the back before was there as he had turned around half way through the ride. Nice to get it out of the way early.

I am amazed at how bad my swim technique is, but this video has gave me a picture of what its suppose to look like and that has help me LoL

I have a 10K race tomorrow.  It's hilly, it will be warm/hot and humid, I'm definitely not in any way peaking, or tapering, and I'm probably a little under-trained, and I'll be out late tonight at a fireworks show.

Sounds like a recipe for a PR.  :-)

As for what to call race day, I think it depends on what I'm trying to accomplish.  If I'm just looking to finish, then I'm "doing" or I "did" a triathlon; if I'm trying to be competitive in my AG or OA, then I'm "racing" or "raced".  I'd probably say the same about the single sports, too, though.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

We're in Tucson for a girls triathlon training weekend.

First workout of the day- Ride up Mt. Lemmon. I absolutely loved the climb up the mountain. Descending (for 27 miles) is probably not one of my favorite things. Maybe if we lived somewhere other than Houston it might be less nerve wracking. Our only climbing consists of riding up an overpass. lol. Swim on tap at the U of Arizona pool this afternoon. Lots of refueling (food and beer) to recover properly for the next workout.

    Featured Ride: Mt. Lemmon

Rising gently out of the scalding heat of the desert, Catalina Highway (also called Mt. Lemmon Highway) ascends from 3,000 feet of elevation to 9,100 feet over about 27 miles. The grade holds at about 5 percent for nearly the entire climb as saguaro cacti and mesquite trees give way to cool pine forests, brisk air, and dramatic windblown igneous rock formations. Enjoy the vistas on the way up; heading back along the velvety-smooth road, you’ll be more focused on the sweeping, no-brakes descent.

This is SO funny. I just got a text from my husband.

It appears that he purchased a new TV while I was out of town. He let me know by sending a text with a picture of Slowtwitch Forums on the new TV. Text said- Slowtwitch on new 60 inch TV.

My husband is the ultimate salesman. I was going to get mad (not really) but since Slowtwitch can be accessed by the new TV then it is okay...

I just think it is funny that this is the way that he came up with telling me about the TV

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.

Individuals are just that, individuals and need individual programs. However, with a group the size of yours, it may be difficult for your coaches to do 25 individual workouts.

Tri clubs offer all of us, from beginner to advanced athlete, a venue in which we can realign our perspective of what “fast” and “far” are, pushing us to new and greater heights of performance.
