I need to get into some kind of routine, but man, I keep letting work and life get in my way.

Only natural I guess (then again, what do I know)

Originally posted by drfoodloveI think Ironman Egypt is off the table. My research partner kinda shook some sense into me, since it would mean taking time away from our already busy and limited field season. I’m quite disappointed, but it is probably for the best. I am still planning to take my bike to our field site with a trainer (that I’ll hopefully purchase in Cairo). Between running in the little stretch of paved road in front of the dig house, bike on the trainer, and my Zwim swim trainer, I’m hoping to stay in decent shape until I can get back to Cairo in January and find a gym to train in for Worlds in May.

That's a shame

You should get one of those fat wheel bikes like you ride on the beach - problem solved!!

Struggling to get back into a routine is fine.  Friel calls it "transition" phase and it's supposed to last 1-4 weeks where you're doing whatever you feel like doing then eventually get back to structured training.  I think it's short for "transitioning to a psychotic mess who thinks he's getting fat every second that passes without training" but in reality we need them.

Bummer about your Egypt decision but like you said it's probably the smart move.

3K-ish yards at Masters this morning w/ Nicole (we actually did a few intervals together before the coach yelled at me again LOL...) - that was an azz-kicking but a great workout.  I think the coach is hell-bent on getting me to be able to physically complete an individual medley.  Now whether it's legal or not is another story.  Lunch run planned in the really nice weather.  Also didn't get a ton of sleep last night as our daughter was up in New York at the Harry Styles concert and my wife was a basket case.

Not sure I ever told anyone but we have a huge bike race here in Maryland Sunday - it's the only UCI race in the United States this year.  It's about 130 miles and the last 25 or so are a circuit through downtown Baltimore.  Should be really cool to see these guys live.  Pretty much everyone not doing the Vuelta a Espana is riding, including a bunch of TdF riders.

Gretchen - Homo hajj made me lol. That's going to be AMAZING!
Understand about IM Egypt. That's tough but definitely makes sense. Still good that you're making plans to get your equipment over there. and agree with Mike, take some time to just enjoy your time with minimal training for now, and then you can gear up once your body (and mind, honestly) has recovered a bit.

Mike - as you may know, I do not really track my training log very well. I'm very jealous for those of you that do. Now that I have my Garmin, that is where all my tracking is happening, but I don't often look and compare what I'm doing to what I've done. I think if I had done that in college I would get more out of it, but as an adult, until recently, the training I did was very unstructured and inconsistent.

Nathalie - Good luck this weekend! Excited to hear how it goes! And if you could get a video of the Scandinavian Warrior Princess scream, it would be much appreciated...

Andrew - Happy father's day (yesterday)!!!

I got in 2600 yds at masters with Mike this morning (I was late again, so got a little less than him ). Definitely would've been awesome to finish out that set together! He is weird to new people and I have no clue why. He made me cry on my first day with the team (and a few times since then). Luckily I had goggles on and was swimming so no one really noticed (I think).
And he loves his strokes! I think Mondays are mostly freestyle focuses. We usually do a mix on Saturday mornings too, but that is with Joan...you should check out one of those, she is wonderful. I'm going tomorrow!

Wednesday I got a 30 minute ride in, and yesterday did a 30 minute drill workout (run) around the park, so pretty solid week overall! Might try to bike today too, or push that to Sunday (running/hill workout and swimming tomorrow morning).

I’d stick with Joan if I was you, that other coach seems a little too… I don’t know… I would not have come back a second time if the coach had made me cry on the first day. Maybe it’s because I am too soft but more likely because I am too old to take shite from anyone.

Another week, another podium (2nd), another past Nat beaten. 2021 Nat is less fit than 2018 Nat so she was easier to beat. By about a minute and a half. Not sure exactly until the official results are published because I once again failed to stop my watch and press between things.
I know the swim was 15:24, then I forgot to click after T1, before T2 and at the end but I know I beat last year’s time as when I stopped my watch a few seconds after the finish it said 1:26’01 and last year was 1:27:30

Happy

Have a Nice weekend!

Great race, Nathalie...way to beat your ghost from last year.  Your transitions are just mind-blowing.  Nice work helping out the beginner - we all remember.

Good job on another great race. 2022 Nat has sure kicked past Nats this season. You should be pleased with yourself.

Thanks for the fathers day wishes. Pancakes in bed for breakfast and some 'grown up' lego to build with Mr 5.

4 and a half hours of SBR for me last week.

0 Swims,
4 bikes on Zwift, 2hr 30.
3 runs, 2hr 02

The last 3 or 4 weeks have been a definite step forwards in building up some consistency. I still need to work on more frequent runs, I want to be averaging 5 a week, not 3 like currently. But 3 is better than it was, and 4 bikes a week is going very well.

Now the frequency is on teh improve the goal for September is to start increasing the sessions length, to get that overall volume up. 45-60 minutes on Zwift, not 30. 30-40 minute runs in the morning, not 15. It'll take a while but I'm feeling more positive than I was a month ago

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Nice to read this Andrew, it’s all gonna be easier for you now that Spring is here. Spare a thought for us poor North Hemispherians (is that even a word? ) going into the dark and cold months….

One more race for me on Wednesday evening, a 10k, then it’s a wrap for 2022. I’ll take a couple of weeks off from BSR and then start winter training. I think there will be lots of Zwifting as I need to improve on the bike.
Hoping to do as many races next year as I did this year. Maybe a couple of olys instead of all sprints. We’ll see.

Happy new week everyone!

So the ministry of wife and I had a 'grown up' discussion last night. As you know I'm not overly happy with my fitness levels these days. It's a bit embarrassing to think 18 months ago I could finish an Ironman, and how far I have fallen since then. As we know, nothing motivates like an over priced entry brought and paid for. So I did a thing...

6 months to get my back in shape

Alright...I'm back into training mode. No more faffing about in a post-race stupor. Yesterday was a nice hour Z2 run. This morning I went to masters, where we did something in the neighborhood of 2500yds (not sure--watch, my memory, and coaches totals all differ). This afternoon, I'm hitting the bike for a 30' spin in Z2. Sunday I have an Oly, so I figured I should probably get on my bike at some point before then!

Yep - nothing like writing a big figurative check to get motivated!  Congrats on the decision -  now time for the work!

That happens to me every single practice LOL.

Big long weekend here in Baltimore...Saturday I did a short 1200 TT and then a 30-ish mile ride.  Both were horrible - I had a tough week with a couple of efforts but still had a good week, which I finished up with a long walk (almost 6 miles) around the Baltimore Harbor checking out the race course.  We then went to the Orioles game (lost...bleh!) and watched the finishing circuit for the UCI bike race.

It was so awesome!  You cannot believe how fast they are live.  We had a pretty good turnout at the finish line, too.

Then I did NOTHING yesterday and opened up the week with a repetition run on the treadmill at the Y (5 x 1' @ R pace, which is about 8:00/mile for me right now).  Solid considering the debauchery over the weekend.

A little under three weeks until Giant Acorn Oly - another big week then taper starts.  I'm also trying to drop 5-7 pounds so dropping the beer (booooo!!!! ) and cookies.  Well, maybe not all the cookies.

Thanks for the support. Looking forwards to getting things right.

Also looking forward to having my summer 70.3 in March, instead of mid January. Not trying to be in peak training phase over the Christmas break seems like a much better schedule.

I've entered the half distance option, at IMNZ, where I've done my full Ironman's. Never done the half here before (so guaranteed PB!) This time maybe I will be a spectator at the midnight finish party, instead of a participant.

45 minutes on zwift, with some FTP work for the fist time in ages last night. Short pre breakfast run done and same as Gretchen a 30m Z2 spin this evening.

Welcome back to training mode. Do you have a target for the Oly? or is it just a 'have fun and don't die' race?

nice start to the week.

2 weeks of taper for an Oly? Sounds a lot to me. I would say one week or less would be enough. What exactly does do you do? or not do, other than staying off the beer and cookies?
