Go me!  I couldn't take laying around anymore so I decided to try a short 40 min. cycle and once I got started I didn't want to stop.  Went for a short 20 min. run afterwards.  Feel pretty good, it loosed up all the junk.

ditto what Cashmason said.

Shin splints can also be a strong indicator that you have the wrong shoe for your foot/ stride.   In my personal experience, shin splints have almost come from worn out or wrong shoe.   Get the correct shoes, and the pain goes away.    Don't know if this is your situation, but certainly one to consider.

Icing shin splits can also help at times to releive the pain.

Now -- get better

Stationary bike ride, and some time on the treadmill. (Notice I said some) I'll get back into it soon, right?

Anywho, I have a silly question: if I've got a little bit of prickly, painful sensation along my shins when I run, shoulld I keep running through it, or should I back off and let it heal? Where's the line between the inherent discomfort of training and the body's warning signals? After having a bad experience in November with minor pain quickly becoming a major issue that took weeks to decrease, I'm a little gunshy. But at the same time, I'm rarin' and ready to go. Am I justified in my fear, or should I just work through it by more s/b/r?

Anytime I've had shin splints it has been shoe related.  I know you just got a new pair, but if it doesn't stop hurting soon I'd take the shoes back and try another pair.  Just my 2 cents.

Just like Cash and UTT said . . . shin splints occurances are doing too much or going to fast too soon. . . which would be my bet since you mentioned just easing back into running. As far as running through pain, I would suggest do not push through . . unless you are able to determine between what is normal training pain, or that which is a precursor to injury. It is usually best to listen to what the body says

Thanks for the input, guys. I think it's a warning, not normal pain. Is there such a thing as normal pain? I am starting to have ankle pain again, too. I hate to think it may be the shoes, cuz yeah, they're new, and have been doing ok until now. I guess maybe I need to have some evals done of how equal my movement is. There's someone local that does this, I just don't know how much it is or if it's worth it. Any oppinions? I have an old knee injury, and I now when I'm really tired I walk totally different and my hips/low back pay for it.

Hey mila,

Sorry to hear about the pain It can never hurt to have your biometrics looked at to see if there is some sort of mechanical issue with running form, it can also be a huge help in correcting such form to become more efficient with better running economy. I also learned once that its good to try different shoes instead of each time you need new ones then getting the exact same shoe or newer model each time. The reasoning was, that as you get stronger / faster that a shoe that worked for you in past, may not necessarily work now that you are a better runner.

Personally I have 2 sets of shoes . . one for short runs, very light weight, and one for my long runs . . . heavier shoe. Its suppose to help in muscle recruitment and getting all the muscles in your run well worked due to the subtle differences in the shoes types.

Hope the info helps!

Heh.  Corey saw the pink star and assumed it was Mila.  It's O.K. Corey...pink and Mila are hard to separate.

Sorry I've been AWOL.  Been traveling a lot.  I did get a nice brick (bike/run) in on Monday and a 2800 yd swim in yesterday.  This morning it was just way too easy to bag the workout.  I'll get it in...

I love how people have stepped up to give advice and answer questions.  That's what makes BT so great!

Have a great week everyone.  I had an almost non-workout week last week.  I'll still be running the half marathon this Saturday (heatwave!  30 degrees!  Any warmer and it can't be called the Frozen 5K and half marathon ), but not planning on a PR (1:47).  I think it will be more on the order of about a 1:52:40.  I'll have to do a quick estimate based off of my (poor) training volume.  This (www.runcalculator.com) is a great site which gives you a predict based off of run AND bike volume.  Give it a look.

Givemashot, looks like have some of the same issues with foot pain.  I just bought new shoes too and my feet have been hurting since my first run in them, bottom of my feet are tight and hurts. That's why you all don't see much yellow in my graphs this week.  I did run today, 1 mile, but in my old shoes.  My wife brought home some orthodics to put in my shoes, hopefully that will help.  The new shoes are the same model but I think Brooks changed the model a bit (I hope not, I hate that when the shoe company does that to shoes I like).  Hope everyone is working out hard.  I think I need a kick in the butt to get me going the rest of the week.  Keep up the great work!

Yes I hate when shoe companies do that. Have some Saucony Hurricane 7's loved them. Bought 9's and they give me blisters.

I hear ya'.  After a week in St. Croix, and too many rich dinners and rum smoothies only to return to sub freezing temperatures and a absolutely packed Y; my January has been a bust.  Thanks to everyone for the inspires as I have pretty much been AWOL.

My hats off to you guys (and gals) that have managed to stay focused through out the winter.

Good Luck to all you who are Racing this weekend!

Well, only 750 yards shy of my swim goal, above my run goal 10% and closing in on my bike goal (although I may miss that one) for the month.  Weight Goal, well, we won't talk about that one -- I'm getting pretty discouraged about that one.  Almost 3 months of consistent training and the scale isn't moving -- in the past I'd have been down at least 10 lbs by now...

 UGH!

Any Ideas???

So I went swimming, and I'm definitely headed back down the same path I was on in November. My R ankle felt tight, and it hurt up along the malleolus. That's exactly how it started in November. I'm going to give the running store a call to discuss this with them. I've had the shoes for a couple weeks, have been careful not to take them outside, etc...and I'd gladly take store credit. I plan on getting a biomechanical analisys of sorts. I'm just not sure which of two people I'll go to. One does it for a living, and is a triathlete. The other is a sports exercise specialist who worked with our local "The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital" (TOSH for short). She'll probably be cheaper, since we're related...I just don't know in which sports her expertise lies.

I'm sorry. I don't have any advice except "just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. Just keep swimming...." (feel free to add verse two, which replaces swimming with running, and verse three which replaces swimming with bikin'). Original, I know

Huh?  You were in St. Croix last week?  Where have I been?...out of touch I guess...

Did you know they have a half iron there in May?  That would be a fun one to do...sharks and jellyfish?

I think they have a full Iron too. I traveled much of the bike route, by car :-(. I have a greater appreciation for those IMr's. There are some hellacious hills on that route. Absolutely stunning views though.

I know, I know..   But I've got to run fast to beat He who shall not be named, but loves cheesecake this summer.

I know I need to do more LSD runs.  That will help a lot.

Saw the movie Spirit of the Marathon last night. Features Deena Kastor and a top ten male Kenyan runner and 4 regular people training for the Chicago 2006 marathon.

If you are a runner you will probably enjoy it. Probably would bore the kids and non runners.

It will show one more night in February, I think Feb 21 and then go to DVD.
