MDHillSlug - 2010-03-09 10:56 AM If you are still interested in my group ride saga I just prodded a response:

The impromptu rides which take place via the yahoo group are not announced via our club website nor "officially supported" by . I'd take time before any ride you're involved with to set some "ride rules" but no guarantees on whether or not the group will listen. Only events listed on the website under the training tab are official club events. This has to do with insurance and "club responsibilities". Hope this helps. It's a trial and error process to find a group that you like to train with and feel comfortable with. Put out your requirements/requests to the Yahoo group and see what happens. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Ride safe,

I responded that I can see the distinction but I'm not sure everyone else would, so from a club liability standpoint this should be stated explicitly somewhere.

I guess this is why I prefer to ride/train solo

So sorry the club let you down, but don't give up on group training altogether.  The right group can be such an amazing resource.  Best of luck.

I agree with this! I get a huge amount of support from the donks. We will get together and train....there has even been times where I thought I would die during a fabulous hill workout and they came to inspire me up the hill by saying "No donk left behind" I also have a great tri club that holds no drop rides...they also hold "drop" rides that one day I will make it through!

I've been with the group for just over a year. They are centered about a 1/2 hour away from me and are the closest and most active group in the area. I haven't taken part in most of their group runs and rides because they either haven't been convenient or haven't been well suited to my training needs. I've had great OWS with them and until Saturday I was quite happy with what I was getting from them. However, I must admit to feeling a bit like an outsider; they seem to be a pretty close-knit group and I'm not terribly outgoing so I don't really know anyone all that well. The two I know the best are the couple I bought my tri bike from but they are worlds out of my league as far as experience/training level. If all I get out of the group is access to the group discounts and access to regular OWS I'd be getting my money's worth, even if I wasn't getting all I could out of the interaction.

I actually only joined my tri club only for the discounts and to hear people's experiences. . . I never really thought I'd be active in going to group workouts and making close friends.  But I was able to, even though I'm way slower than most of my tri club friends.

Our group workouts during the summer have more of a go-at-your-own-pace but if you find others who are riding/running the same speed then go with them type of atmosphere.  I'm a slow rider so I usually do end up riding by myself, but that kind of just motivates me to train more/harder so that one day I can keep up with someone (usually it'll take me the same time to do 40 miles as it takes others to do 55).  But usually people will wait back at the starting point until everyone gets back so that we know we didn't lose anyone and also so we can all go out for brunch/lunch after.

Sorry for all the rambling, I just thought I'd share my experience as someone who also gets dropped at group rides.  The other thing is, maybe you're not the only slow rider, but others just don't want to come because they're afraid of being dropped too.  Could you post on the board asking if anyone who's going XX mph wants to do the ride together (so it'd kind of be with a group, but you'd form sort of a secondary, slower group)?  At least it'd be a way to find a training partner your same speed and you wouldn't even need to go with the group.  Just a thought

billsorg - 2010-03-10 9:10 AM Good morning bEASTie boys and girls... I got my long run in this morning (10.26 miles) and it felt really good.  I felt like I was struggling a bit through the first few miles, but then got into a pretty good grove.  Then a friend-of-a-friend joined along and she seemed to help me pick up the pace a bit in miles 7-9.  Overall happy with the run and l'm looking forward to my half mary in a week and a half.  I brought my gym gear for a swim or recovery bike ride at lunch, but I'm on the fence about going.  We'll see how the morning goes.

Great run!  Sounds like you're all set for the half-mary!!

I brought my tri bike in for new cabling on Friday. I've used the shop a little for products but this is the first time I used them for service. Dropped the bike off Friday after work and it was ready by COB on Monday so really good turnaround. Hopefully I'll get out on the bike over the weekend to see what kind of job they did. I'm really hoping they do good work because they are the most convenient LBS for me (other than Performance and I'm NOT entrusting my bike to them).

Great job Bill.  How do you make it through work after that - I would need a nap

Bill, I am honestly struggling already.  I usually don't get the post-workout-coma until after lunch... maybe around 2:00.  But it's here and I don't think any amount of coffee is going to make it go away.

I'm with you on that one Nicole.  I have to get a good amount of work done on my bike and I'm going to drop it off at the LBS in the next week or two.  I'm hoping they are able to do everything and do it right (I have a strong feeling they will).  I don't want to drop it off at one of the big chains, like Bike Line.  When I'm in a Bike Line, I feel like I'm at a car dealership and it's just sell, sell, sell!

Morning (okay, nearly afternoon) bEASTies.  Having a really blah day.  Got my swim in last night.  Will be doing some strength training tonight at home.  'Nother swim tomorrow.

The weather is really great this week, eh?  I'd like to get my bike out, but like others have said, I think the roads are too messy still.  I don't have a trainer and haven't ridden my bike since last fall.  My arse is soooo gonna hurt!

That's awesome Erica! I'm going to have to go out now to try the sunny running myself.

I can believe it - I know after my first real long swim all I wanted all day long was to sleep!  Just make sure you eat to keep the energy up.

I think that's why I like working out at night. . . helps me sleep Tongue out

Do you have a problem being too alert at night from the workout initially or do you just crash?

My plan is to swim tonight and sleep all night hopefully - last 3 nights I have woken up at 2:00am for some stupid reason!

Oh, I just crash.  I usually workout with groups or a workout partner right after work (6:30 usually) then grab dinner after.  By the time I go home, shower, and log my workouts, I'm ready for bed.  Umm, sometimes I fall asleep at the computer while logging my workout (serves me right for having my laptop in bed though!)

Hopefully your swimming-at-night plan will work!  I hate waking up in the middle of the night

I hope you are all happy with yourselves--today, I had a cookie.  A chocolate cookie.  Conveniently, I do not blame myself, because clearly all of you GS cookie posters are the root of the problem. (Thank you all for providing me with a convenient way to transfer blame for my lack of self control.  Have a great day!)

Made it back from my qucky run outside to enjoy sunshine. It was full of hills and I was STARVING since I had to squeeze it in between meetings - no time to eat before hand. A little painful - I do not like running hills - but I was so happy to be outside! After this nice weather, I don't know how I'm going to survive the next several days of rain...

Today, I am officially old.  I woke up generally stiff in the joints, but really tweaked my shoulder while simply reaching into my closet.  Now, I can barely turn my head, and I had to bail out of the lane at my tri club swim this morning.  Finished up with a few very easy-paced 100s so I could post a mile swim.  I feel like a geezer.

Yum... chocolate! I have to go to an office birthday thingy in 15 minutes. I'm hoping for something chocolatey!
