robingray_260 - 2011-01-08 2:16 PM I like to make chips out of sweet potatoes. Slice them thin, drizzle lightly with olive oil and a dash of salt and then roast in oven. The turn out crunchy, sweet and salty - yum!

I love sweet potatoes......I do the same thing but grill them.  I like them a little crispy.

Im at work and now I'm getting hungary.  Hope work ends soon.

I heart sweet pots as well.  I actually plan to eat one for breakfast. I like to mash mine w/ a little skim milk and butter, and add cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg and splenda.... It's definately a fave of mine.  Oh yeah and I like to eat it w/ a scoop of natural PB

First race of the year tomorrow!

Been sick the last few days, the kind where your whole body just aches.  I guess it's good timing though because it's snowy right now.  Looking forward to next week!

Way to meet your goal!

You all have a great week.  Lots of snow coming to the Midwest.  Glad to have a trainer and treadmill handy.

n3dinc - 2011-01-08 10:13 AM Successes: Signed up for sprint tri and have been having consistent swim and cycling workouts.

I am now working on getting consistent with my meal plan (it is not a diet, those are short term I am in it for the long haul).  Gonna be eating a lot of fish and chicken and green veggies.  I have been increasing the amount of water I am drinking and that seems to be helping.

Had a good swim workout this morning and may have a weight session this afternoon depending on what the family has going on.

I like your thinking on the "diet".  They are short term and are not practical in life.  I started my weight lose about a 1 1/2 ago with a group of friends from work.  They tried all types of diets (south beach, starving themselves etc).  To date they look the same and I'm 55 lbs lighter and have reached my goal weight.

Congrats on signing up for your first tri!

Great attitudes and great results.   I'd lost weight before, but it was the diet mentality.  No lifestyle change.  When I hit goal with no exercise, I eventually drifted back into back habits, especially have a divorce.  This time, the weight loss was gradual and accompanied by exercise, ever increasing and changing amounts and kinds.  I won't ever do without it again.

Good morning guys!!  Thought I'd throw myself back in here, miserable or not!   I had a pretty good weekend, especially Saturday & Sunday (GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)  I spent 8 hours yesterday cleaning out my house from top to bottom - well its only 1 level..hehehe  Made 3 trips to Goodwill.  It amazes me how much stuff 2 people can collect in 10 years.

I also signed up for my Zumba classes and got a good deal for 7 classes at a new Hot Yoga place near my house. My husband is going to join me for Yoga.

I also booked my flight to Scotland! :-D   7 weeks and counting! YAY!

Today's my rest day.  Good thing as I am feeling very tired and worn out.  Also feeling a little sad since my "baby" (he's 6'1) left for school yesterday. Frown

Question regarding new running shoes.

my old shoes are done, as I am starting to get shin splints - I have another pair on the way and should get here today. They are exactly the same shoes. Do I need to wear them in first with a few smaller runs or can I go out and run 6 miles right off the bat?  Since they are the same shoe (just new) I am hoping not to have to spend the time to break them in. Thanks - Robin

You've got 3 choices:

Skip the 6-miler today (yea...I didn't think so, but it IS an option)
Wear the old shoes (you know your shins will NOT thank you)
Wear the new shoes (low risk of a seam rubbing, but your shins should be happier)

I've been blessed with neutral arches and a neutral stride, so I can get by wearing just about anything.  As such, I buy whatever I find on sale (New Balance, Reebok, Addidas, Asics, Saucony).  I generally have 3 pairs "in rotation" with one pair near end of life (200-300 miles), one pair starting (0-100 miles), and one pair "in between."  This way, if the "new" pair doesn't work out, I've still got one or two other pairs to wear until I find something else.  I use the equipment tracker here and figure to "retire" my shoes at about 300 miles (since I buy them on clearance for $25-40, I don't feel bad not getting 500 miles out of them).

If you're going to run a lot, it's probably better to have at least 2 pairs at all times so you can avoid the current situation.  You might consider doing the 6-miles in the old shoes, but do it on the trail or something with a softer surface.

I run in the same make and model (or updated version) season after season and I have never had any issues with just putting them on and going.  No break in period necessary.  Of course, your results may vary.
