Mentor Group - CLOSED jmhpsu93 - 2011-04-27 2:37 PM Oh man mike I hope you have a speedy recovery!!Well, I managed to have my first major bike crash today (well...first in about 25 years anyway). I was out riding and hit some of that grooved, milled pavement, and when I tried to get up onto the good pavement evidently I didn't cross at a steep enough angle so BAM! down I went. 4 hours of ER time later I'm lucky to only have a bruised hip, badly bruised forearm, sore shoulder, and some pretty decent road/gravel rash on my knee, forearm, and hand. Oh, and I was about as far away from my house as I get on this particular route. Had my father-in-law come out to pick me up (tire was flat...no spare tube with me) take me to the hospital. He had been contemplating buying a bike, took one look at me and said, "Well, Mike, you've just saved me a couple hundred dollars." I don't think I'll be swimming for a bit, but hopefully my hip will be OK to race my 5K Saturday. They say you will definitely wreck on your bike if you ride it enough...ugh! |

If you don't have pics... it didn't happen. I kid! I kid!! DUDE, THANK GOD you're okay and it's just bruising. Seriously. Yeah, I learned the lesson of hitting grooves, curbs, and things of that nature at a sharp angle after three broken fingers as a kid. And hey, you saved your FIL a few bucks And seriously, pics of big bruises are cool!! If you get bored, fire up some pics. |

Good to hear you came away without any major injuries. Well at least you got your accident out of the way, clear sailing(riding) from now on! Yikes!! That sucks and sounds painful. Glad to hear it hasn't put you down for the count. I tend to agree with Greg. I fall once a year. First year involved a lot of bruising and major road rash. Second year I wasn't even moving - just tipped over and broke a rib, collapsed my lung and fractured my elbow. Both were "Thank-God-I-had-a-helmet-on" falls. But now - while I still have an annual spill - they have lessened in severity (thank God!!). Last year I learned to turn my meaty hip in to the fall This year - yes - I haven't even been outside!! but still managed to slide across the concrete in my shoes and fell under my bike with some nasty scratching & bruising but.... IT'S DONE! And now we can move through the season with that under our belts. Heal quickly! |

Mentor Group - CLOSED kimmax - 2011-04-27 7:14 AM Well with less than a week to go I realize I'm not likely going to hit all my targets for April. I'm pretending Sunday is part of April though. So if I get everything in that I want to get in by the close of Sunday I'll be short 1 hr swim | 2.5 hrs bike | 1.75 hrs run. Oh and I skipped all the strength training (4 hours). Not *too* shabby but that's IF I manage to get in all my planned training. This will be more of a challenge as I'm basically working from Thursday morning through to Saturday evening eek! How's everyone else doing? I am going to fall short as well, even if I had Sunday to work with. Having said this, I really have picked it up this month and I am going to push until the end. Overall, I am pleased with my results thus far. |

Regular 97 | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED so i ran 10 miles last week (probably shouldn't have ran it). afterwards, my calf and esp. my achilles was really sore. my achilles was sore up until Thursday. so my theory why my left achilles ache so much is because I didn't work my way up to 10 miles. what do you think? does that make sense? i'm a ball of the feet runner (transitioned this way about a yr ago). i'm concerned how I'll feel after my 1/2 in a couple of week. i stretched afterwards, I tend not to stretch beforehand due to muscles are cold. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Hi Jeff. Based off your number from last month and you bar graphs, it looks like you built your run slow enough. But numbers alone don't tell a story. What was intensity? Are you running hard hack-to-back efforts? A lot of time intensity plays a part. Even if we build mileage slowly, we forget to build effort just the same. If you are re-establishing and increasing your running base, the vast majority of your miles should be very EZ, with a short tempo only once a week. Also, are your running on the same terrain? Are you running in new shoes or different shoes? Perhaps there is a variable you're not thinking of. Perhaps pushing off the pool wall is affecting your achilles? Regardless, stay off the achilles until it feels healed. YOU DO NOT WANT A CHRONIC ACHILLES PROBLEM. Stay off it for 2 days and then attempt a run. If it feels sore at all, immediately stop running and then wait 3 days before trying to run again. Repeat this protocol until you can run pain free. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED As far as April Goals, I crushed my Bike Goal. Nailed my Run Goal. And missed my Swim Goal by an hour, so I was 90%+ of goal. So yeah, I'm very happy about setting my goals, assessing where I was at the hlafway point, and pushing through at the end to accomplish them. Great sense of satisfaction. May is all about Setting Your Own Goal. Whether it be training, not hitting the snooze button once, or weight loss. May is about choosing your own personal goal that will help you continue and achieve a happy, healthy active lifestyle. My goal is weight loss. Specifically, getting down to Race Weight for my first 70.3 race the first weekend in June. My wieght today is 171.6. My goal is 166. Which is 1.5 pounds a week, with 4 days extra at the end of the month. WARNING: I am going to be miserable and cranky without my chocolate. Just an FYI |

I thought tomorrow was part of April so ya... that combined with brutal work schedule this week makes me short on reaching my goals... Goals | Reality Swim: 7:30hrs | 4:19hrs So I'm pretty much shy 3 hours for each sport. What's that - one workout per week of each missed? My goal for May is to stick to the plan and get my weight down. I've been like a yo-yo lately and it's time to get serious! I'm 6 weeks from my bike ride and I have to say ... I don't think this plan is going to get me there! A bit disappointing. I might be wrong but I just feel as though I should be further ahead. Doesn't help that I still haven't been outside!! Today was the nicest day all year and I had to work. Tomorrow I've planned for my long ride and... showers are expected Way to nail your Ted and Bobby!!

You will be fine for the Century. Don't forget to take all the "Inside Riding" and times it by 1.5or even 2 in some cases. It's different for everyone. For me, it's close to X 2. That's right. The effort it takes for me to ride 20 miles on the trainer equals the same effort for me to bang out 40 miles outside. It's just so much more lovely riding outside. And don't get down on yourself; you can't control the weather. Once you finally get a nice 60 degree sunny day, you're going to be SHOCKED at how easy and fast the miles fly by while riding outside. Stick to the plan and you will be 100% fine for your Century. I guarantee it. |

Expert 640 Sun Prairie, WI | Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED Great Birthday for me! Bin Laden has finally been taken care of and the U.S. Navy was highly involved in the operation. As you can imagine this has tremendous meaning to me. I am not one who celebrates the death of anyone but if I had to choose one to celebrate this would be the one. It is a great victory for the Military as it helps moral out after almost 10 long years of ongoing operations with no real visible victories and no end in sight to combat operations. Additionally I think it helps to bring some closure to those who lost loved ones on 9-11. As you guys are already aware I am racing IM WI on the 10th anniversary of 9-11 and they are having special recognition of 9-11 during the event. I will be racing representing the U.S. Navy. I have decided to fund raise in support of the Wounded Warrior Project. I will be putting out additional details in the future. I can't even begin to express the amount of sacrifice I have witnessed over the past 10 years by fellow service members and their families. For me it will be a way of honoring their sacrifice for our great nation. I am a Naval Flight Officer by trade and have seen and done a lot of interesting and challenging things over my career. I can tell you that the hardest job I ever had to perform in my 19+ years of service was notifying the mother of a sailor who passed while serving his country. These are the memories which help drive me. I will get off my soap box now, but I felt compelled to share what is a very big day for me. |
