Excited to be doing another challenge. Any takers on the weight loss challenge, May edition?

I have been told by my lovely wife that I was forbidden to lose any more weight (after a 16-18 lbs loss since November, sitting at 190-192 lbs currently). So I will pass on this one.

Samy, I keep forgetting to ship the bars, I'll bring them tomorrow. Sorry.

Close to getting new shoes, and thinking about the Brooks Ravenna or PureFlow. Currently using the Asics Kayano. Any comments/suggestions?

Of course fit will be the main driver, but intrigue by the mid-strike/minimalistic route. Should I rotate between a more "normal" shoe (like the Ravenna) and a more minimalistic one (like the pureflow)? I am planning to go to a running store and see where I stand with my stride (heel striker? mid-foot striker?), but wanted opinions.

(BTW Chris, comments like "Shoes? we don't need no stinking shoes" do not help Wink)

No prob, but if I don't win Kona this year it will be on your conscience.

Thanks again!

I think for ease we should say competitors have to have 4 rest days in the month taken as prescribed by training plan or as necessary.  My rest days are typically Monday and looking at how May plays out on a weekly basis I should have 4 rest days.  Allowing one to take how they see fit allows for additional flexibility in training schedules.  Fair enough?

That is me tonight - my daughter's soccer team that I coach has a clinic tonight where I only have to observe, I'll observe while running on the track right next to the field where they practice...I think I even convinced one of the other dads to wear his running gear and to start running again.

I like this. My rest days are normally Sundays, and I hated taking my rest the "first" day of the week on the last challenge.

At least one day of rest per week. If you choose to do a workout you can pick which one to delete (I would erase a 30' one).

I like this as well, because it allows those of us with races to take a proper rest day before the race and not feel the need to get in a couple workouts to keep up with the contest.  Not that I'm overthinking this or competitive or anything...

By the way, what did we decide about races and if they count as three workouts regardless of length of time?

To be clear - there are three full weeks (Sun - Sat) in May and two partial weeks at the beginning and end of the month.  To make it easy I was proposing 4 days of rest whenever in the month.  You could take 4 days off in a row in my scenario.  The end result is no one is penalized if their training regimen has a weekly day off.

regarding races - I am fine giving one credit for each leg - think we need to stipulate min distance though...i.e. must be accepted sprint distance or greater (500M, 12.4 mile, 3.1 mile)?  Just a thought.

I've begun running in a pair of Merrel Trail Glove shoes (1.4 miles 2 Sundays ago and 1.0 mile this Sunday).  I can't be sure if its the shoes, but guessing it is, each time I ran in them my calves have killed me.

I started with Kayanos for years, the went to Ravennas for a marathon and now run exclusively in Saucony Kinvaras. I love the Kinvaras and my feet and knees have never felt better.

Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!

Merrell Trail Gloves are essential Vibram One Fingers. It's the shoes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abr_LU822rQ

You have to work up very slowly running barefoot or minimalist. You are using your calves (and foot muscles and achilles) way more than you have in the past. Work up from a mile very slowly. As in, if you plan to run 5 miles, run 1/2 mile from home, run back, change into your shoes and then run another 4.

I've been running in zero drop Newton MV2's (which are as light as Merrells or Five Fingers) for a little more cushioning. I have to say I really don't like running in shoes. I feel my feet are to confined. But running barefoot, Vibram Five Fingers, or Merrells is something that takes months to work up to.

apologies in advance for the negativity ...

Before we start the MAy challenge we really need to find a different way to accurately record and update the daily progress - with so many of us aprticipating there is potential for errors to creep in.

Even after the reminder for weight challenge earlier today, there are ommisions above.

If we use something like Google Documents instead of embedded the data within these posts, would that eliminate errors?

I was able to get a short run in during the practice but I had to run in the surrounding neighborhood.  Miss judged the hills for sure.... Haven't looked at the log yet to see if the elevation was different either but the head wind was brutal! At least I was able to get in 30 minutes though..

Well, I guess it wasn't the hills after all!  Only about 200ft/300ft higher than where I typically train and the hills were not steep, just long inclines, so the wind may have been the problem tonight.

Seems like a lot of additional work to log when we really need to just check after we post to see that we aren't posting at the same time as someone else and catch the latest update.

So then we don't use it.  No biggie.  It didn't take long to create it and after catching up on reading all the posts - seemed a common frustration with some that they couldn't update the chart or that updates weren't being logged.  Whatever works for the group.

I was hoping to get a run-weights-swim in tonight but hubby forgot and took the dog for a super long walk leaving me to watch my child.  Tomorrow... attempt #2
