Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought I would share this for those feeling a bit toasty atm, stolen er borrowed from the training page of BT. This was Brad's experience (IMSG had 30 to 40 mph winds). After the finish, I realized I had parked somewhere that was blocked in by the race so I just hung around for the duration, chatted with finishers, got a massage, ate, ate, and ate some more, etc. At 11 pm, I headed for the bleachers at the finish to watch the last hour. That was the first time I had done that and it delivered all of the wonderful things I had heard so much about. It was great fun to just watch all of the excitement, especially after such a long day. Despite everything that had happened that day with the wind (in case you didn't hear, it was a bit breezy at SG this year), what I remember most about the day is what happened next. When the last finishers had arrived and midnight passed, the crowd dispersed with everyone still feeling the magic, or so it seemed. As I walked towards my car along the finish area barricades that were now vacant of the revelers who had been so boisterous minutes before, there was near silence. Then I saw one young man, perhaps around 11 or 12 years old, in a red baseball cap standing along the barricade, his eyes fixed up the street. He looked stunned and sad. Oh no, is he still waiting for someone to finish? Then I saw who I assume was his mother, camera in hand, looking up the street and wiping away a tear. My heart sank, but I couldn’t turn away. Minutes passed and nobody else was coming. The boy moved away from the barricade, head down, and sat on a nearby curb. I passed to the other side of the street, but I couldn't leave. Then there was word that someone was coming. Shouts passed from person to person about who was it was. Could this be the person the boy was waiting for? It was! He jumped up and ran over to the barricade and began shouting for his father, joy restored. I pulled out my phone and shot a video as the father passed and the boy held up his own camera to capture the moment of his father reaching the finish, whether anybody else was there to notice or not. I could tell he was going to support his father no matter what and was just as proud as any other kid whose father reached the line before midnight. The time didn't matter. That is what the spirit in this sport is about. None of us could do this without the support of our loved ones. I finally headed back to my car with a smile on face and a lump in my throat, but a happy one. Brad How much does your daughter charge for swim lessons 8) ?

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, I've been a bit MIA.. Been struggling with injuries and a sickness that just wouldn't go away. Sickness is getting much better after a trip to the doc and about 5 different meds. The foot is still giving me trouble. Went to the Foot doc, but things still aren't progressing well. I live for my long runs so it's been tough. I have been getting some decent training in. Just trying to maintain and get 100%. I'm dying to really get out there. I've been seeing some great things happen to all of you. It's just amazing to see everyone so committed. You all should be proud of what you've accomplished so far, but I feel great things to come! Keep on keepin on! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch have you thought about aquajogging to help maintain your run fitness while your foot is on the mend? I really hate injuries. They make me depressed, well downhearted anyway and eat lots of junkfood and get fat. And it is really hard to come back from an injury without overdoing it, especially if you are trying to make it to a race. RICE. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve & everyone -- the IMSG story gets better; the guy has posted video of it!!! It is amazing to see. The thread is in TT, and is titled something like "Magic at IMSG". |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long day today, 7 mile run, 25 mile bike in 15 mph winds and 2200 yard swim. Time for bed. I will have to look up the video. It is nice to have a kid who cares. Mine play computer games, nap and read books while I do my IM. Not that it is that exciting, but they could at least mossy on over to the finish line if I can give them a within 20 min finish time. Maybe I can get them to vollunteer at the next one, at least my older ones. Free food all day at the finish line and a free shirt might entice a teenager right? Ok who has questions I haven't answered yet? I know I am missing something, just can't remember what. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve, I've got a question. How much does nutrition change as race day approaches. I know runners do the 3 day "carbo load" thing. Should I do something similar before my HIM. I know I don't want to change my whole diet, but are more carbs a good idea the last three days? |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What a great story. The kind you will not find on news channels. There are many reasons for Tri-ing and it is these unexpected spontaneous simple loving moments that make it that much more special. Thanks for sharing.

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow Steve, you did over an Olympic Triathlon as a training day!! Carol, I'd say if you think you have enough time to train properly, sign up. I know I do a lot better with a deadline. I biked to school today, which took me exactly an hour, which is what my plan called for. I am so glad the days are getting longer. I train so much better in the morning! |
![]() ![]() |
Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't really change much prior to race day for nutrition. Granted I may be a little less cautious with calorie intake for a couple days, but I don't do any sophisticated carb loading. I am not nearly fast enough for that to make any pivital difference on race day. The most important thing is to fule appropriately on race day. Get like 200 calories 2-3 hours prior to race, just a power bar is fine, nothing fancy (although folks have their preferences) and then a gel 15 min before the swim start. Get to transition early, you will be surprised how it can take an hour to find a parking spot, get your numbers marked, find your place, get your stuff set up and your wetsuit on. Best to not be freeking out as the race is about to start. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ugghh!!! I went to the pool and my goggles broke. I am just having no luck whatsoever. I did a little Aqua Jogging but it still hits my foot so that's out as well. I have never had so much trouble training in my life. I'm just going to take what I can get and try to get back to 100% Frustrated..... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Steve- the story and video was a joy see. Those are the stories that motivate me to do this. The people who maybe never thought they could or whatever who put in the time and commit to something bigger than themselves. Then in the end it really isnt about the glory; it's about finishing what they started no matter the time they cross the finish line. Mike and Larry - I'm confident you will both do well. Stick to your training. Let your body have the rest during taper and then stand confident at the starting line. Steve is right, your body knows what to do because you have trained it well. Just breath; take a minute to notice something you appreciate while you are biking and running: architecture, landscaping, mountain view or whatever. Give yourself the freedom to enjoy the race day process. And know we are all cheering like crazy from different parts of the country! Typing on my phone cause house Internet isn't working so I can't use my computer. So this is short. Training is going well for me. The new plan is in the beginning stages so low miles, but I can build of and make more gains before I start the real high build numbers. Shoulder felt weird in the pool yesterday. Cut my swimm down by 100. Hopefully it will be fine today. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mitch, I had a calf pull about 8 weeks before IMCDA about 2 years ago. I was limited to walking for 5 weeks and then had 3-4 weeks (including taper) of walk/jog. I walked 4 miles a day 5 days a week at a good pace, for walking and then was able to build to a 10 mile run/walk before CDA. I was pretty bummed, but was able to complete the race. I then took 2 months off to heal everything the right way before starting back up again. It does so suck and even during the race I was bummed, kind of that it wasn't all I wanted it to be. I remember a guy at one of the aid stations on the run saying that he hoped I was on my 2nd lap of the run. I was, but did I really look that bad? I was actually able to run the whole marathon, if not so fast. Hang in there. So last year with an iffy hamstring I found that riding the bike on the horns put less stress on it than in aero position (for those of you with hamstring issues). Currently I am trying to get more comfortable with a flatter back for aero so my neck does not kill me so much after mile 85. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today's 7 mile run splits: 7:32, 7:22, 7:22, 7:33, 7:31, 7:41, 7:23 = Average 7:29 mpm. Happy with that, especially after yesterday's workout. K guys put your long run mile splits up if you have them. It will help us see where your fitness is for the longer runs. Do not worry at all about how fast you are, I am looking for where your pace relative to the rest of your run drops off. Oh and if you have stuff to buy there should be some good online sales this weekend. Take a look at your stuff and see what you need. Today I retire a pair of running shoes (350 miles on them or is it 400 miles) and started to feel too much impact on the left forefoot impact under the big toe. Time to crack open the reserves. I make my old run shoes into casual walk around yardwork shoes. So now I have newer dirt shoes. Edited by Baowolf 2012-05-24 3:55 PM |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Everyone! Its been a while since ive checked in. Im feeling fantastic! Training has been consistent and Im LOVING it. Since I began doing Triathlons (since Jan 2011)Ive enjoyed the training. The hardest part some days is just getting up off my bootay and doing it! But once I get out there I feel good and thrilled that I did it. Sure you can relate. Race day's hasnt been super spectacular. With the exception of last weekend's Morgan Hill Sprint Triathlon! IT WAS MY BEST RACE EVER! Mostly because my swim was fantastic!! No panic attacks, no water down the wrong pipes, breathing was perfect. It just went so well. Im still on a high! Swim: 3/4 mi -30min. Bike: 16 mi -60min. Run 5 mi -49min. Race report is up if want to read more. Got a text from a friend today that said Vineman 70.3 Waitlist re-opened. So I signed up right away and have my fingers & toes crossed that I get in! C'Mon Vineman 70.3!!!!!! Edited by EV3110 2012-05-24 4:53 PM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() B-R-r-r-ick.. Ick! Actually, I had a lot of fun doing a brick last night. About 7 miles on the bike and 3.1 running. No killer times but a nice workout. Elena - nice to hear from you. Congrats on your race success! Steve - okay a novice question but I have to ask how crazy does the swim get at the start of the race? I think I plan on trying to stay wide ahead of the crowd. What are your strategies? |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got my 1.2 mile swim in this morning before school. It was pretty cool swimming in a calm lake as the sun came up. It was so nice I didn't even care I was a little slower than last time because it's hard to site in the dark. 12.5 mile run tomorrow, 55 mile bike Sunday, then recovery week!! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Strong training Larry, survive this weekend and you will be ready for your HIM! The swim is really different depending on how it is set up. Wave starts are not a problem at all, you start with a reasonable group of folks and just kind of figure out where you fit in the pack. For me that is BOP, back and outside. For the IM 2500 person mass start it is a little different. Again for us slow folks the strat is the same, walk into the water don't run, let the 1:45/100 or faster folks go out and clobber each other and just walk in at your leasure, find some space and settle into your stroke. After say 500 to 1000 yards it will thin out a bit and you will generally be fine. I haven't had any real issues with the swim, although there has been some bumping and such, no kicks to the face or whatever though. Be really careful about breasstrokers, those are the ones who will kick you in the face, ribs, whatever. Basically just try to find a little space and focus on your stroke and siting, stear around folks as you can and don't worry about the bumping here and there so much. If you have a wetsuit it is not like you can even sink if you wanted to, just think of it as a gentle bumperboat ride. In smaller races (say 750 or fewer people) there is really no issue at all unless you are in that 1:30 to 1:45 pack and jockying for key position on the ropeline. 19 out of 232 in your age group is definately a strong finish in your sprint, very impressive. Welcome to FOP!!! Edited by Baowolf 2012-05-25 10:06 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, you guys have been busy! Larry -- no time for poker for you...you're training! Thanks for the encouragement on my logs...yes doing what I can muster. That early morning swim in the calm lake sounds wonderful. One of those things that makes this journey fun. Oh, and yes, I'm definitely thinking about the HIM, but waiting to hear from a friend to decide on which one. Ceril -- where are you girl? Hope you can come back out to play soon. Steve -- loved the story about the late finisher. That is a day neither he, nor his family will ever forget. Thanks for the encouragement on my logs. Not trained up like I'd like for this race, but it is what it is, so best thing I can do is get my head straight and go out there and have some fun. Your workouts are looking really strong BTW. Ha, good luck finding the appropriate motivations for the teenager! Now there's a challenge. Joe -- nice brick! And how cool that your fishie daughter is your inspiration! I agree, the psychological aspect of this tri stuff is interesting. Mitch -- good to see you! So sorry about the foot trouble continuing. Hard part about that is not knowing WHEN it will get better. We are truly fearfully and wonderfully made! Sometimes it does seem like everything is stacked on not getting the workouts in, but I have no doubt you will emerge ready to attack your workouts. Samantha -- I love your perspectives. You are an excellent writer in addition to being a dedicated triathlete. How is your shoulder doing? Elena -- AWESOME job on your race! I can see why you would be stoked. Sure hope you can get into Vineman! Wow, I noticed you and I have been at this about the same amount of time. We've come a long way baby! Heading out shortly to pick up my rental bike. It was there yesterday and I THINK they are holding it for me. Have also thought through my race goals, and discovered I actually have some. This helped my attitude a lot. (1) PR the swim - well within reach unless something weird happens (2) bike w/o pushing too much and encourage as many others as I can along the way (3) take a shot at PRing the run (for OLY) (4) be more aggressive with my insulin delivery to hopefully avoid the nasty highs that race day usually brings for me, which will hopefully yield better performance overall.

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So doing the math from my new swim book my stroke rate is 1 left and 1 right arm stroke = 1 cycle = 2.4 seconds. The book says this should migrate towards 1.2 to 1.4 seconds. So I need to end up stroking twice as fast..... without losing form. The book states that there should be no "glide" which is likely where I am wasting time in my stroke. This means that I should have my hand in the water farther into the stroke by the time my above water reaches the water. Then there are the hundreds of components to develop a high elbow catch/pull etc. I am hopefull that using resistance cords will help me find where that high elbow should be. I am also stretching my shoulders towards my ears daily (arms over head overlapping reaching far pressing shoulders in towards ears). The other really interesting thing is that we theoretically propell ourselves with water vortexes,(vorticies?). So if one were in a canoe and had a paddle and started a stroke slowly and then caught the water and then excelarated the stroke making those little funel shaped swirls in the surface of the water. It is like that. If you hit your padle against he water really hard from the air, the water is like a brick, the paddle hits hard skips and the boat doesn't move. However if you dip the paddle in, get purchase and then excellerate slower then faster you get a more powerful stroke. The concept goes across almost all sports, it is just how to apply it to swimming that will hurt my brain. Thoughts from our fish? |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So 35F ish today raining, grey some wind... not so much motivation to start my run today. Looked at the weather forecast... worse as the day goes on. Got it done, but I am ready for summer. I think snow is forecast for tonight. |
