Swim question: I was reading a thread on that other site that made me think of a question about the swim. I'm expecting to swim roughly 1:00, are we allowed to cut inside of the yellow buoys, and just go outside the red turn buoys? Assuming the current's light this would cut down going through BOP swimmers. From the looks of this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fzbW7vjMpg&feature=relatedit looks like that's okay

Also I'm that guy....what type of swag do you usually get at IMFL. I really want a backpack, should I plan on buying one?

We got backpacks last year at check in.  No idea what they are doing this year.  Usually you get a bag of some sort and aposter at check in and a finisher shirt and hat awhen you finish. The second loop of the swim things are very spread out and you can cut the corner getting back in the water. Actually I just read my race report from last year and I wanted to enter wide because of the current but HAD to enter on a diagonal because the spectaors had inched up the beach.  i did my first loop in 36 minutes so 6 minutes behind where you wil be give or take a little bit.....dont worry about crowding the second loop it will be fine

I think it depends on who you're with. If you're by yourself or have some training/racing partners with you, then definitely go. If it's just you and the family, I would probably skip it. I went last year with my training/racing group while my family and friends stayed at the condo. Yes, it's crowded...no, the food isn't all that great...and yes, the program goes on a little long. BUT if it's your first Ironman, as it was mine last year, it's pretty cool to get in that room with all those other people and watch the "pump up" videos they show and just take the time to immerse yourself in Ironman. I say unless you would be deserting your family alone, try to make it...if for nothing more than to experience the environment and the energy. Also, they have a brief race meeting at the end, but it won't be anything you don't already know.
I don't do white noise very well and I wanted to shoot myself in the head after about 90 minutes of the low level din in the room.  The year I went there were not enough places for everyone to sit and it was just miserable.  We actually left before they did the race info which was the only reason I wanted to go in the first place.  DO NOT BRING SMALL CHILDREN to the athletes meeting....

Last year at the athlete briefing they said as long as you go around the red buoys your Ok. With the current direction last year cutting the corner on the second loop going to the red buoys was going into the current, if its the same this year I will go around the people on the beach and start the second loop really wide.

I'm bringing my kids and I risk total annihilation if I make them miss Halloween.

it sounds like Pier Park Mall is the place to be in PCB for Halloween. Sounds strange to me to have Halloween in a mall, but scroll through this video...you can see it is PACKED with kids in costumes:

Plus it is close by and being in a mall means less walking for us!!!

Great thanks for the info, I think I went to that mall last year the day after. If it's the place I'm thinking it's all outdoor shopping, pretty nice place.

We are planning to go to Pier Park. Never done it before, so I can't vouch for it personally.

this year Lake Placid and Texas had the smaller backpack, almost a sling bag backpack. definitely not a nice transition bag like last year's races, but a little more than a swim suit bag of the year before. The sling and the backpack are both pictures in the Ironman store. Imagine something in between the two.

I'm hoping for these. My swim bag is falling apart and I've been holding off on buying one in hopes of this $650 one

Quick question for you all:

We're supposed to be getting rain and storms all weekend and I have a 100-110 mile ride (last biggie) penciled in. I really don't want to ride in the rain for 6 hours as I just got my bike tuned up and all pretty and I'm not willing to ride that amount of time on the trainer. Would it be a bad idea to switch this weekend's long ride with next weekends recovery week workout?? If I postpone the long ride this weekend, is it too close to race day to fit it in next week?? Thank you for your help!

I'm doing a 112 bike next weekend (out of necessity) and a hope three week recovery will be enough. I did IMFL and then IM Cozumel back to back three weeks apart for the past two years (Skipping Cozumel this year). I felt good going into IM Cozumel but that didn't last very long it came back and bit me hard, I was one tired used up puppy. I'm not sure I would push it if there isn't a tee-shirt involved.

Thank you for your advice!! I've ridden 70, 80, 90, and 100 over the past 5 weeks (one was a 30 mile recovery week ride). I just really wanted to get another 100 miler in. I do feel confident in my training, however. I've only missed 2 planned workouts thus far. Thanks again!

#1365,
I got the bag from last year and its really nice. I hope they give out something similar.

2 more BIG weekends then taper time!!!!
Arriving in PCB before IM is like going to normal ville, where everyone is out riding and running and very fit. I belong to the majority and not the minority there. The pre race atmosphere is awesome!!!
