Pro 5123 Canandaigua NY | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED As you can see, I do have internet access. And to make all my northern friends jealous I am typing this sitting on my balcony watching the waves crash on the beach. On the bad news side, I need to do some investigating as the ride here from the airport was on some very narrow roads, with wild drivers that use the side walk if there isn't room to pass. The hill down into the hotel was the equivalent to the first big hill on any roller coaster I have ever been on and there is no side walks there. So, my running this week may wind up being on a treadmill. That taxi ride was the scariest ride I have ever been on! |

CLOSED kenj - 2013-01-20 12:13 PM jennifer65 - 2013-01-20 4:17 AMI've always used rate of perceived exertion (rpe) as I don't have a heart rate moniter. At a very basic level, the higher the number the rpe the harder the effort you should be putting in. The downside is that it can be inconsistant and its easy to lie to yourself if you tend to be a bit lazy, like I am. :-) One of the reasons I like to suggest to newer triathletes that they use a HR monitor is that RPE is difficult to figure out. In your case Jennifer, it is not about being lazy, but some people just don't like or aren't comfortable with the higher effort until they know what it feels like and gets used to it. For others, they go way to hard and wind up incapable of finishing the prescribed training or worse case getting injured. But, once you figure out and gain experience, RPE is a perfectly good training tool.To answer a question that was asked earlier, a heart rate monitor is my next bit of kit I would like. Sadly the finances won't run to it at the moment but i do feel I would benefit from it for the exact reasons you have stated. When I'm at the gym I measure my heart rate on the machines from time to time - but as i don't really know what I'm aiming for it's not hugely helpful. I shall keep saving. Jennifer |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED I am off the strict paleo diet. After the flu over Christmas I felt like crap. I added some whole grain back into the diet and I have loads of energy again. I did 14 miles yesterday on the run at 9:06/mile, 2:07 overall. Blazing for me. I have to start doing negative splits at this distance. I have at shorter distances but this volume of running this early in the year is all new. So, will try it for my coach. Today was a intensity bike workout with 3 X15 mins SEs (hill repeats at 50 to 60 rpm and high power, 90%) with 15 X 1 min SE pops to 130%, five per interval. Even after the longish run I had plenty of gas today. Feeling good. |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED RPE is OK to use but it really means little unless paired with HR or a watt meter. So many things can make the exertion seem harder...illness, lack of sleep, poor nutrition. HR is affected by the same things, too, but it's more accurate than RPE. Watts don't lie. You either get the numbers or you don't. Disadvantage is cost.

Equipment purchases - After four seasons I've got a lot of stuff. - I had a 310 XT Garmin and replaced it last year with a 910XT, which I love. The 310 XT had issues with the display becoming scattered and unreadable. - I have three road bikes, a Giant TCRc1 I bought in 2006. Great bike. A LeMond titanium I love on the road and use on the trainer because it is indestructible. A Trek Pilot 2.1 with fenders and bags I commute on. - I started triathlon with an Orbea Ordu I bought used and built up. Bought it from a guy my size but it never fit me and aggravated a back injury. Did IM on it, then talked to a fitter who has a bike shop. He sold the Orbea and a MTB I had for $2600 total and I bought a triathlon bike, the Specialized Shiv. It is not a TT bike because it is not legal at bike races. It is strictly good for triathlon. It is the most adjustable front end out there so he got me to a good place last season for the half IM and now raised me up all the way for the IM. I'm looking forward to riding it in spring to see how it goes. - Wetsuits. One long sleeve, one short. I won't wear the long sleeve again unless the ice forming on the top or there are jellyfish around. - Yes to good vented helmets. I wear the TT helmet on short races. I am more concerned about comfort and heat control on the longer courses so I wear a road helmet. - I replace goggles as needed, bike tires etc as needed. I need some new bike shorts. I have a closet full of jerseys and technical shirts and always seem to gather more. - I have a huge triathlon book and DVD collection. I add to that too often But it's all really helped. Learning is what it's all about right? So no major purchases in the mix this year.

Sat I did the 45 miler, but ended up having "woman issues" half way. seriously really felt sick, nasusa and severe cramping...I almost never experience this on rides, and it was just horrible. Even though it was Zone 1 ride, it was just almost (i said almost as i finished the ride anyways) unbearable for a long while. Luckily this was just an easy social pace weird route (some parts of it was a little dangerous, and I wouldn't dare to ride alone!), so I got it in. Its been way too long since I've done a long and slow distance at Zone 1 for 95% of the ride, so that's a nice experience. Today, I woke up still feeling nauseous, and bagged the ride. However, I'm feeling better now, so I may put in a trainer ride (which sort of stinks because it's great temps today! Curse you Adam!) later on. I just ordered the Garmin cadence speed sensor for my bike and already have the ant stick and Garmin monitor, so I'll give it a try. As far as feed back, I'm curious to how user friendly it is; is it as simple as 'keeping it in the green', as they say; does your trainer ride seem to go by faster because of focusing on stats; and most importantly, have you seen favorable results? BTW, have you done Jorges winter plan with it yet? Yup, very user friendly. Search the workout you want, click and start riding and keeping your power at the right level. You do need to make sure your HRM and speed/cadence is detected by clicking on devices, it will search for ANT+ devices before you start your ride. less than 30 seconds. Green means it's detected. You do want to do your 20 minute FTP test to determine what watts is your threshold, then you plug in the number and any future rides will read off that number. It is set on 200 until you change it. If some reason there is a ride you need to do, and you feel like $hit, and want to go a little bit easier but still want to work hard, you can adjust the workout by dropping it to 95% or below. Or if you feel perfect, you can bump it up to a certain percentage, so you can adjust the rides on the fly without changing your FTP. Oh yes, the ride seems to go faster! I have not done the Jorge's plan (look under Challenges on BT forums to get to know others who have done it). I might add a couple of his workouts in, need to start establishing a stricter plan. I haven't done it long enough to really make any discernable results just yet. Ask me in a month. I do wish there was cadence based workouts than power. My power drops if i go higher cadence, however i think it means i need to try to go harder gear than easier, which in a sense is like strength training. |

So what im taking away from this is, by using my HRM and watching my % compared to how I feel should help to gauge what my RPE zones may be. I already can feel when it becomes extreme (I actually feel it in my ears and nose - if that makes any sense) and also when I feel I can just keep going. When I'm feeling less then normal, it should in fact alter my RPE. I know a power meter wont be on my shopping list this year, but trainer road is in the works. |

CLOSED kenj - 2013-01-17 10:51 AM ramiedd - 2013-01-17 7:38 AM CyborgQueen - 2013-01-16 5:02 PM Just realized that my cycling schedule for March-May is going to be swamped!! Skinny Tire Festival - march 9-12 (meaning I'll have to give up Zion Century) Down Syndrome Century - March 27 Gran Fondo - April 8000' of climbing (most likely won't do this one) Tour de Fire - April 13, would like to do the 134 mile route Tour de Summerlin - April 20 Tour de Cure - April 27 MS150 IN Sedona - may 12-13 (forget the dates, but beginning of May) I did not register to all of them...I asked my cycling friends on what they think I should do. Seems like most of the bike rides are concentrated during those months due to overheating issues, especially for Tour de Fire which is typically in May, but so many people collasped due to heat.same goes for the Tour de Cure, it was changedfor 2013. Its the matter of deciding which ones! Not only that, its also triathlons too. I may just skip triathlons and just done one or two in the fall instead. If someone asked me to be on a team, I will do it. this is what my cycling schedule looked like when i was single one year i did 15 centuries. My wife would kill me if i schedule half of what you have on here. looks like so much fun....Have you tried the "easier to beg for forgiveness than ask permission" approach? Never mind, thats a bad idea! I tried that early on, but it it did not work. I am hoping that with the big goal in mind this year, she will be more understanding... |

CLOSED kenj - 2013-01-20 7:08 AM Jambago - 2013-01-19 10:19 AMI have to admit, my last year's group never even made it to this many pages of posts! I'm happy to see the dialouge from everyone. So, Life being what it is, non-stop with family priorites, not much since the marathon last Sunday. Regarding the run, I thought I'd be a lot more sore, but really at two days after I felt great. No issues at all. It's a big diffrence without the added elevation around home during training runs. I'm about ready to start up my own version of a winter maintenance using 2-3 days of Jorge's Winter Program (I now feel cycling is my weakest sport), and had heard some of you folks speak about Trainer Road, any feed back would be appreciated. As far as swimming, that was my weakest sport in the beginning, but since I worked hard the first season and had some lessons, it paid off. My focus for the winter will be 2 days working on better form and return to bilateral breathing. Maybe another lesson or 2. Running goal will be to maintain my LSD with some hill repeats. I seemed to be able to go the distance, now i'd like to bust through hills and speed up a little bit.Regarding training by HR or RPE, can anyone give a real layman's version of RPE for me. I was looking at the BT HIM Beginner program and it's RPE based. I'd really appreciate having any insight in to it.Thanks. Glad to hear the recovery is going well! Sounds like a fair approach for the winter? How many runs a week are you thinking of doing? To be honest, I'm not 100% sure. I went out today for my first run and felt great. While I was running I hit my few hills and felt the way I typically do - HR increases, stride shortens, turn over slows a bit. When the grade levels out, I do to. I never was a fan of hills, not runing and not on the bike (its a good thing water doesnt have hills too!) What I kept thinking was I want to train in order to DESTROY hills, each lousy foot of elevation on top of the other! All while at the same time working to increase my steady run distance up to a HM (so far its been to 11 miles). All my runs over 13 have been run/walk (mile / 1or2 mins). My HIM training begins in April. Any ideas? As it stands now I'll be doing at least 2 maintenance, and perhaps a long slower distance every other week to hit my HM. |

Veteran 385 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Thanks everyone for the kind words about my dog. We had him for 7 years so we definitely miss him. Thursday we got a crap load of snow and power was out for two days. One of the great things about signing up for one big event early in the year is that it forces you to get out regardless. I went out today for a 1 hour run partly in a trail which still had 6 inches of snow on it, but one thing was on my mind, this is what it takes to become an ironman and I must do it. On purchases, I somewhat have done most of it already. I had a Tri bike that I built for my half last year and sold it in October thinking I was done with long distance tri races and could do any others on my Trek Madone 6.9, but once I made up my mind, I built another one. Fortunately I like to buy and sell components all of the time and found some good deals. I did add a powertap training wheel a few weeks back. Aero helmet is one that I will buy sometime in the next few months. For what I understand from all of the research, it is the cheapest speed you can buy. On the training front, I have finally put together a 20 week training plan leading up to October, I had to be realistic as to what I could do based on time available with kids, a company, and all the other responsibility we have. |

Both created by Jorge, and it's confusing because they do not match with each other's workout. TR has 5x30 sec build, rest build, 10 x 2 min a little above threshold, then cooldown. No where it says on the Winter Cycling program to do that. So I'm confused on which one to follow. I'm going to at LEAST try to do most of the weekly workouts required before the Night Rides starts. I asked about why the two programs are different on the Winter Cycling Forum, so hopefully my question will be answered. This is where I'm completely lost, and feel like I need someone to TELL me exactly what to do. LOL! Perhaps someone here can help... Goals in order: #1 - get better on hills. #2 - get faster #3 - better endurance (I have no problems knocking out 30 milers, 40 milers, 60 milers, it's just the last 15 miles or so, I get a little worn out...probably from going too hard to try to keep up with the group. I have the endurance to go long, it's just the steadiness to go long I need to work on). I'm not 100% that Jorge's program will work in my case, it'll help, but not effectively have me reach my goals. So, if anyone else feels that I should look elsewhere, let me know. I feel like I'm just cycling blind. Anything on the weekends, I will be doing long distances and mainly focus on better endurance (that takes care of #3), vs a structured workout. Hope I'm making sense...lol! |

CyborgQueen - 2013-01-20 7:29 PM Thanks DJ, I look forward to setting it all up this coming week and will keep you all posted.Jambago - 2013-01-20 3:14 AM Yup, very user friendly. CyborgQueen - 2013-01-19 8:33 PM http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... for RPE Trainerroad - what do you want feedback on? Is it worth it? Yes. Jorge's winter plan is on there if you're going to do his program. Thanks, thats good to know. I think after doing it and from what I understand, Jorge's plan will help with 1 and 2, 3 will benefit but there are not a lot of 3 or 4 hour rides in the plan. It is basically a good plan to increase the power level, but you can raise your CP 20%, then add the endurance at that level of power and think of the results you will have on the longer rides.
Good goals though DJ!! |

Extreme Veteran 1700 Normal, Ill. | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED If you are using watts, keep a mental log of RPE too. It is really cool to be able to cover your watt meter and estimate where you are and then see how that matches up. It's OK to go all out on short courses. That's why they call it a sprint triathlon after all. It is all out. But when we race long races, we race by RPE don't we? How do I feel at this moment? It doesn't help to have a watt goal for a race in mind and then beat your self up to reach it, get off the bike and have nothing left for the run, right? We have to constantly ask ourselves, how am I feeling? If we red line too much on the bike we will overdo too soon and falter. Watt meters are a great way to gauge how you are feeling then. The watts are 75%, I should feel 7 RPE, but I'm feeling way higher. Back off or blow up. Or, I am feeling really great cranking good watts at an RPE 5, don't go any higher. Or headed up a hill, we can watch the watt meter real-time read out and see if we are red lining. Do that too much and it takes it out of you over time. You can watch the meter, shift to easier gears and spin up without hitting the red zone. The watt meter really shines during workouts to help target the right spots to cause overload but not over training. But again, they are pricey. I bought my first Power Tap new. I got my second with racing wheels off eBAY and hit a great deal. So check it out. Other kinds are more costly but have advantages too. For example, you can get the pedal-mounted ones and change them out between bikes regardless of your wheels. I had to get a second PT to take care of race wheels. But with the deal on eBay, I got a set of good race wheels and a matching third rear race wheel, about $5,000 worth of stuff if new, for $1800. There are deals out there.

Coach says its normal for this time of year. The diet/weight lifting just really taking a toll. On a good note, I cracked under 170lbs today. I've never been this light in January!! 170 has been a tough mark to crack for me and when I do I slingshot right back, so I gotta make this stick! |

Member 326 | Subject: RE: kenj mentor group - back for another great season! CLOSED Day time high -31C, with the windchill it will feel like -41C. Tuesday is my long run outdoors. Scheduled for 13 miles. I will be heading to the track to run around in circles 200m at a time instead of running outside. This morning it was -44C with the windchill when I got up at 5:15am for my morning master's swim. It was a bit chilly coming out of pool building. The joys of living and training in the Great White North. Edited by DeVinci13 2013-01-21 9:41 PM |
