Yep, back at it.  I need to change focus a little this week.  After Saturday's tendon tweek, I want to ease back into my running very cautiously.  Pain is completely gone when I walk but will give it another day before testing it with a short, easy run.  Good side is that it does not affect my cycling.  Put in a hard hour on the trainer yesterday and will ride again tonight.  So this week will be bike/swim focus.  I'm also refocusing on weight loss as I've been failing miserably with that so far this month.  I have been eating way too much and I feel it.  My goal had been to lose four pounds but I think I've actually gained.

I'm really going to try to focus on reincorporating strength work and resting appropriately.  The Skiba book we're reading for the Oct/Nov book club has really convinced me that I suck at that.  I almost feel like it's fighting a training disorder of sorts.  Harder is not necessarily better.  More is not necessarily better. Longer is not necessarily better.  Trying to retrain my brain to not fall into those patterns.  Those voices are louder than I think I've been willing to admit, which I think can get a little complicated because I often use exercise as a kind of therapy and the "release" comes with the longer or harder work.  I'm hoping bring some yoga back in will help me counter some of that stuff and stay focused on the big picture.

HAHA! You think? :

Glad you are tackling this!

I have found that when you are antsy about wanting to do "more" invest that time in some supplemental strength exercises and recovery stuff like icing/rolling etc. It helps to "fill the void" a bit.

I know. I know.   You were like a one woman intervention team :)

I'm trying, I'm just a slow learner.

I like that safety plan.  I think you should give us a pic of you all tricked out in your flashing regalia

Alright, so with the little hamstring flare up, I've decided I need to get serious about doing some strength work, and not just say I'm going to do it. So here's to shooting for three days a week of glute, hamstring, and core strength.

This week will probably be weird, though. I'm part of a Ragnar Trail relay team (though I did warn them that I'm slow and coming off an injury, so if they wanted me on the team, it was with the understanding that we were not going to be competitive!). So I fly out Thursday, "race" is Friday/Saturday, then relaxing Sunday, and fly back Monday. I'll get in some strength work tonight and probably Thursday morning, but we'll have to see if the third time this week will happen.

Next week, though, definitely getting it in three times! And hoping tonight's run will feel like yesterday's....and that I'll be able to run parts of each of my legs for the relay.

Awesome! Ragnars are a ton of fun. Especially when done as "non-competitive."

I think you should go for it and commit to 3 sessions. You'll have what, 11 other runners? Surely you will have some out of the van (or whatever) down time to get a quick little 10 minute strength session in.

Exercising patience on the trainer ride. Mostly repeat last Mon as it's a decent set for here. Just a couple watts higher on the 20's and the aerobic 45', but no 3' high up. Resisted the urge to push these two 20's up higher and add 3rd. Save it for the other two harder rides as that's how I have things set up to go. And also just make the swim feel nice to be out there. Recover from yesterday's big set and be ready for tomorrow, both with Masters.

Ben, you're my idol.  Keeping the easy days easy, and the hard days hard :)

ETA: This is my new sig line.  I thought I could use the many times per day reminder.

I feel like I may have built this up too much, but I will have you note the long hair (which in had some intense curling and aquanet action, I'm sure), gold chain, cotton socks--scrunched--thankyouverymuch, and running hurdles in pillow shoes.

You're up, woman.  Flashy-lights-neon-vest-picture me :)

ETA: I have tried three times to make this picture smaller. Oy vey. Fail. Apologies for the crazy big photo.

That is such a cool picture.  I love it.  Thanks for sharing it with us.

I can't see the other pic.  I'm at work and some pics don't show up through our network.

Awesome!

OK, only you could still look completely darling in that much neon and a fanny pack!  Besides, when you're fastasfach, you can get away with stuff like that.

Actually, the more I look at the pic, the more I love it :)  Classic.

No. It's not cute. Or fast. And that vest has built in LEDs that charge via USB. So, extra-nerd factor.

But it may save my life. So whatev.

But yeah. That's my daily commute look.

Charging by USB is a little extra awesome.

If you lived somewhere that actually got sun from October through March, you could wear one of those solar backpacks, and charge the vest  while you were running :)

BTW, I'm envious you're able to wear shorts November 12th.  It's not going to be above freezing here today and was 14 degrees when I woke up this morning, so my little sun comment is pure jealousy ;)

I think there were some type of shoes that converted the impact energy as well. Either that or it was the surface they ran on, I forget exactly which.

Oh boy, I could be net zero by the end of the week! I know they had a snowboard that absorbed the energy of vibration and converted it to light. Purdy cool!

Hilarious!  Based on the (awesome) "Tigerette" on the front of my shirt, I was either a late 13 or early 14 there.  I did three or four meets as an 8th grader because my PE teacher really wanted me to, but I was already very checked out on track and on to, um, other "extracurriculars" at that point;)

Sadly, my track career peaked when I was 11/12 :)

If you lived somewhere that actually got sun from October through March, you could wear one of those solar backpacks, and charge the vest  while you were running

BTW, I'm envious you're able to wear shorts November 12th.  It's not going to be above freezing here today and was 14 degrees when I woke up this morning, so my little sun comment is pure jealousy

I think there were some type of shoes that converted the impact energy as well. Either that or it was the surface they ran on, I forget exactly which.

Hey Ben--any pics?

Yeah, no kidding! Man of mystery!

It sounds like you have a very common condition that many runners and triathletes experience called patello-femoral pain syndrome. We have seen that runners with core weakness experience this.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.

One year ago I weighed 238 lbs. and got winded walking up one flight of stairs - literally. I ran across a brochure for a triathlon...hmm. It seemed like an impossible task, but I was intrigued.

So how do you turn a weakness into strength? It begins with effecting a fundamental change to your triathlete self-image.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
