Hi everyone. My name is Jason and I do triathlons.

Busy, busy, busy.

We are in Northern Michigan for the holiday weekend. I have had some spectacular rides up here and some really nice runs. A little bit of swimming but Lake Michigan is still a tad on the brisk side so the swims have been very short.

Randy asked about how our season is going here at the half way point. I'm not sure I know yet. I'm racing Muncie 70.3 next weekend and that will give me a better answer. It might go great. It might bring me to my knees. I'll let you know then

Nice job this weekend guys. Couple of good races.
I got a 1.5 mile swim/ 3 mile run brick in on Friday morning and then it poured here all day. Had to work on Saturday but managed to get a 9 mile run in after work. 50 mile bike ride this morning and now I'm trying to get the lawn work done. After that it's time to float around in the pool. All in all a pretty good weekend.
My first swim lesson is tomorrow evening, I hope I'm not the slowest kid in the class.

Hi All

Sounds like everyone is enjoying themselves this Holiday Weekend.  Good job to our racers!

We are heading home after a week plus at the lake house.  I participated in the second annual Hermit Island Swim Challenge yesterday.  It's a fundraiser for our lake and super low key.  You swim around one of the Islands in the middle of the lake, roughly .7m.  I did about what I expected, 25:00.  The male winner was a :58 IMer, a former college polo player and an ocean lifeguard.  Came in easily at 15:35.  Looked like he was floating he was so smooth in very rough conditions (22mph sw winds).  Female winner was a college swimmer and finished in 16:00.  Never going to see results like that!

Enjoy what's left of the weekend.

Hey gang! Back from the beach. Beautiful weather. Surprisingly "cool" mornings around 70 degrees and lots of sun through the day. Was able to get my workouts in early then enjoy the rest of the day's activities. I'm racing next Saturday so training will be slightly lighter this week. Hope everyone had a good weekend. Nice job racers!

I'm back from vacation as well and will hopefully be able to contribute a bit again.

Spent five days in Northern Michigan and thought the same thing that I do every time I am up there, this is training paradise. I got in a lot of riding, a moderate amount of running and a tiny little bit of swimming. If I had just toughened up a bit I could have swam a lot more but, alas, the lake was still a little cold for my blood. Next month the water should be more tolerable. The riding up North is really hilly. I have done so many hills and races with big climbs that the big hills that used to kill me almost seem 'easy' now. Of course nothing quite as epic as Rene's ride up Mount Lemmon in AZ, but still some serious climbing was done.

Someone needs to put on a week long triathlon camp based out of where my summer place is. I think it would be a big hit, except for maybe dealing with the commute to Northern Michigan.

A short but Busy week for me before I drive down to Muncie for the Muncie 70.3. I hope the slightly cooler weather prevails. Muncie has been a very hot race in the past. About 65 and overcast would be perfect in case anyone cares what I am hoping for.......

Judging by the lack of posting (I'm also guilty) I'll assume everyone was off having fun the last few days. Hope everyone had a great 4th. I turned 33 this weekend and my son got me a Captain America cycling jersey, so just a little more motivation to get out there and ride now.

I'm actually taking the back end of this week off to go down to Cape Cod with the fam and hit the beach. Looks like the weather will be good and we're right on the beach so I should get a good amount of SBR in, especially if I can get my new trailer hitch mounted on the car for the bike.

Went on a short Bike ride on the 3rd before a long weekend of working in our backyard. I am designing and installing a 550 sq ft patio w/ a fire pit and a water feature.

No real cardio workout this weekend, but I think moving 15,000 pounds of paver base, 3,500 pounds of stone block and 1,000 pounds of sand qualifies for a strength workout... At least that's what my body is telling me!

Back to real workouts this week. Then we still have another 30,000 pounds of stone block and pavers to install, but that will be done over the next few weekends... Can't wait to get it done so I can have a cookout and a nap in the hammock while listening to the waterfall after a long run or ride...

HOLY CRAP that's fast!!

I had 4 days off and ran and biked and mountain biked and ran some more. You'll see my long ride on Saturday is named "sorry Phil" because I mapped 65 miles with no regard for elevation gain. DH was swearing the whole time! LOL OH well. It's good for him!

Have a great day all! BACK TO THE GRIND.

It looks like everyone had a great holiday weekend. I'll try to catch up with posts when there is some down time.

Drove from Tucson to Houston yesterday. The trip took over 15 1/2 hours not including stops. We're leaving tomorrow for a trip to Calgary for the week. I'm in the process of unpacking, washing and then repacking. The bike will stay home for the next trip. I'm probably going to swim at the Tailsman Center in Calgary. We'll be at Lake Louise and Banff this weekend. I can't wait to run up there!

We rode up Mt. Lemmon twice. I was actually able to relax and enjoy myself on the 28 mile descent down the mountain the second time. I probably pedaled for 5 minutes total on the way down. lol.. Swam at the U of A pool.  One day I had the pleasure of running with two female professional triathletes in Sabino Canyon. We ran with them until we got to the first major climb/rock/trail section and then they took off. When we weren't training we were either eating or hanging out with a lot of really nice athletes. I'll post more information in my blog if anyone is interested. All and all it was a great trip.

Hope everyone has a great training week.

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend! I'm back from the lake, which has no cell phone signal-but it does have nice cool water, so I think it's definitely a good tradeoff! Now it's back to training; as far as Randy's question a couple pages ago, I feel pretty good about training at this point in the season. Right now, I'm not signed up for anything other than IM Chattanooga at the end of September, and everything is geared toward that. I'm running and biking faster than I did a year ago, and my swim is the same, so I'm feeling good.
I still have solidify my nutrition plans; I did a 75-mile bike last week in the sun and felt very bad by the end, just wiped out. And it wasn't the distance; I've done at least 75-mile rides every week for the past couple months. The sun just really affects me, I think. Also, I need to get MUCH more disciplined about nutritional training; I was feeling good and didn't take in nearly enough calories, hydration, or electrolytes. Now that it's July and the race is less than 3 months away, it's past time for me to take nutrition as seriously as I do the physical stuff.

On another note, I'm right on the verge of a bike purchase. My LBS has a great deal on a Specialized Tarmac that I really want to pull the trigger on. I want a bike for group rides, intermittent work commute (~16 miles round trip), and training. I wanna pull the trigger!!! Someone talk me into, or out of, it!

NEW BIKE! Always a good thing. Not about to try to talk you out of that.

Swim at lunch then weights and short run this evening. Wife and I had a nice dinner out to celebrate our 24th anniversary....holy crap....I've been married all of my life.

Does it meet the following rules:

The Rule of N + 1: N is the number of Bikes, and the rule is to have one more bike than you already have. My friend made this up and it's law to her, but I like to qualify it with the rules below because things can get a tad too crazy if left on its own.

The Rule of the Wife: Does she approve? Disregard if single.
The Rule of the Wallet: Is money collecting dust? Are there no other expenses in need of its attention? Can you reasonably justify it? ("I want it" doesn't count....that is a one-way trip to bankruptcy court for cyclists and triathletes :P)

If it satisfies everything, go for it.

Anyways, just got back from walking/running a 5k. I can't tell you how many times the reset button got pressed this summer, but I'm back in it this time! Still having issues with foot soreness and falling asleep on my right shoe unfortunately.

Leads me to the next thing. Do any of you wear speedlaces on your runs? If so, how are they? I'm looking into picking up a pair since the laces are proving to be too much of a hassle thus far.

Jamie. Buy the bike! I agonized forever over whether or not to buy a cyclocross bike. Finally pulled the trigger myself last fall and I love it. A lot of fun and I only wish I had done it sooner.

Bryan. Yes on the speed laces. About 70% of my shoes have either speedlaces brand laces or heavy elastic that I bought at Joann Fabrics and laced up as speedlaces...... The elastic from the fabric store works almost as well and costs a fraction of what the branded laces cost. It takes a little experimentation to get them adjusted tight enough to hold like I want them but not so tight that they are uncomfortable. I tried thinner elastic and it didn't provide the hold that I wanted. If you go this route, buy the thickest elastic that you can fit through the eyelets on your shoes.

New experience for me tonight......... Yesterday's run was a little brisk and I had some nipple chafing that was definitely uncomfortable when I got in the shower. Well, tonight I went out for my run in a white t-shirt (after dark) and when I got done and back in the light I had two bloody circles on my shirt. It was kind of uncomfortable while running but I didn't realize I was inducing bleeding. I have read multiple accounts of this happening to others but it was a first for me. I guess I'll be wearing compression tops for the next few runs.

Jamie - Get the bike. They wouldn't make so many cool types if you weren't supposed to have one of each.

Bryan - I have Yankz and they are great. Not only do they save a ton of time in transition but your shoes are the same tightness on every run and they never come untied.

Jason - At the end of my Oly I was feeling some chaffage. It didn't progress as far as yours did, but that sucks. I've always heard horror stories about it. Hopefully it clears/heals quick.

Going to the Red Sox game tonight. My God they suck though. I'll have to sneak away to the gym at lunch to counter act the beers and whatever else I find that I can ingest at the park. Have a good one everyone!

As has been said by many others... They work great.

I would suggest you not try to get the length just right the first time you cut them though. They do have some play, no matter which brand you buy and they will stretch some over time, so cut them a little long to begin with. You can always cut more off later, you can't put it back on though if you cut off too much!

Don't give up on them too quickly. Your first few runs you will likely have your shoes come a little loose during your run. When they do, work the laces through the eyelets and get them comfortable again. Resume running.

I adjust mine two or three runs before they get just right, but once they are right, they are awesome.

I also use the Nathan brand, primarily because that's what my local running shop carries. I have nothing else to compare to, but I love them. I'll never use regular laces on my running shoes again.

and after you cut them, burn the ends so they don't fray! light 'em up, then blow them out and let them cool!

I finally feel like I'm back into the swing of things.

Home from Ohio on Sunday (fortunately, my travel was far less eventful compared to getting to Ohio...only had one delayed flight). I already miss the weather!!

Back to running after several weeks off. Been doing a Pilates/Yoga fusion workout regularly for the past 2 weeks and feel much stronger in the core already. In addition, when I started the program, I definitely felt weak when doing standing and down dog (particularly when in down dog split) work on my left leg. Working on my alignment and staying with the program has helped me progress tremendously in with those moves in just 14 days. On week two with a new chiro. He made a pretty big promise yesterday...he'd get me comfortable in aero on my bike. We'll see if he can come through on that promise!

So, overall, my outlook on things is much brighter than it was 2 weeks ago. The only downside is that my 70 day weekend only has 23 more days left to it (I know, wah, wah, wah...).

Hey guys, I'm trying to talk Stuart in to rejoining us. Many of you have gotten to know Stuart in previous iterations of the mentor group. He didn't join up in time for the beginning of this go around but I/we could sure use some of his swimming advice I hope he will drop in and hang with us again. Hope you all don't mind one more group member (if i can get him convinced......)

Great Idea! Besides I think we've lost a few along the way. I've had the nip problem before too but never to the point of bleeding. I usually throw on a couple of band aids if I'm going to go more than 10 miles.
First swim lesson went well last evening. My shoulders are sore but I learned quite a bit. Sometimes I'm concentrating so hard on the drills I forget to breath.
