Medusa_Ann - 2008-06-08 12:31 AM Hi Cool Kids...I am back from the tri....will do my rr tomorrow and post a link.  Synopsis--totally fun, really challenging, can't wait to do it again!  I did it in 2:53--was hoping for 3:15, so I am feeling pretty good about myself.  Had a great time with my tri friends, as well. More on that tomorrow, I need sleep since I was not able to get a single moment of it last night, as I was a ball of nerves.

It is morning and we are still waiting for that report!!!!

Congratulations on a great effort.  Pass along some tips to the tri virgins!

WTG Leslie! I look forward to reading your RR.

I headed over to Redondo Beach this morning to watch the tri going on there. It was fun getting to cheer Yanti on while she raced. Since it's a smaller event (limit of 600 participants), I got to see her several times while she was out on the course and during both transitions. A few of us headed out for a late breakfast afterwards, so that was fun.

As for training, I got in a couple of hours of walking around while I was at the tri. This afternoon I headed out for a 2 mile wog, too. My plan for the rest of the day is a short nap and then watching a movie with a friend later. Since I get to play hooky from work tomorrow to make up for working a crazy long-azz day on Friday, I may stay up late and try to catch up on some stuff on my DVR tonight as well.

Hope everyone had a GREAT weekend!

Dudes, we were a busy group this weekend! Leslie at her first (awesome!) oly...Yanti kicking a$$ AGAIN...and I did my first adventure race. It was just a silly little thing, but a lot of fun. Overly long RR is here: Muddy Buddy!

I do not understand this cold that y'all speak of.  I don't swim in the ocean much (so can't actually speak for how cold the water is), but it's freakin hot and humid over here.  I have about 6 different tan-lines (seriously) from all my different running and swimming outfits.

I need some Manatee advice ladies......(and gents, sorry!!)

It is no secret that swimming has been a struggle for me.  I have worked with one great swim coach who has taken me from a floundering idiot in the pool to less of one in the last 18 months.  I started OWS with him, but am finding that going with a large group who is so much better than me to be a little daunting. I want to do privates with him, but he is so busy with nightly OWS group practices that he has not been able to fit me in.  There is another coach who I am starting to work with on the bike who has offered to work with me on the swim, but I am feeling guilty.  I owe so much to Mark and he is the very best, but the appeal of privates is really high.  I should also mention that the two of them basically resent each other and do not play well together.....what to do?  My logical head is saying do it, but my loyal heart is saying don't.

I am definitely with you on the logical head - thing.  I also understand the hesitancy to switch.  But, when it really comes down to it, it's about your performance, not their issues.  Perhaps you can discuss this with your 1st coach and tell him that you need to have private time and since he's so busy, you are going to have to hire another coach.  Ask if he has recommendations, then go with your bike coach.  If you handle it as diplomatically as possible, there will (hopefully) not be any issues.

x2. You've got to do what's best for Suzy. Their issues with each other aren't your problem and should not affect how you choose to conduct your training.

I agree with the above advice--do what works best for you.  Believe it or not, most people don't sit around thinking about us, they are generally thinking of themselves (or chocolate).  Once you make the best decision for you, it won't make their lives any better or worse, so do what you want/need to do!!  It's like leaving a job where you think there is no way that the company will survive without you, and once you are gone, realizing that business went along as usual.  As you gain confidence with your swimming, maybe you can try the OWS group again, but do what you need to for you right now.

My two cents.

Leslie

great analogy! and oh so so true (i didn't know about the chocolate part )

I agree with the group - you need to follow what you need, there is always that risk that he will react poorly and since he has been so much help to you, that is not a comfortable thought, but in the end he will get over it (and if he doesn't, that is his loss)

Greetings group! I am not dead. Just an FYI.

Positive Thought of The Day: I'm off work for three days this week!

I know that's not tri related but it's making me tremendously happy.

Leslie: congrats on your Oly! Awesome news.

If your coach doesn't have time to do 1-on-1's with you, there is not reason for him to be bitter if you go get someone else. He's the one that says he doesn't have time and it's not like you're going to sit around and wait for him. Go and get somebody who has time!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

I never saw a ruling that positive thoughts had to be 'tri-related' - and, I'm not so sure that 3 days off of work isn't indirectly related - after all, time off work refreshes us - right?

Need some advice from the Manatees

Background - (from my log)

There has been some discussion in the HyVee thread about the upcoming race - apparently due to all of the rain and flooding, the status of the race is quite iffy.

posted in the thread by jdwright56 - he knows someone that works at HyVee Corporate

They are currently planning a second route in contingency for the flooding (it's a real mess here, folks).  He says that Wednesday is the "first test" and the only decision we will hear on Wednesday is a negative one (that Gray's cannot be used).  There is one day of rain called for between now and Saturday (Thursday, I believe), but even if the waters recede, they still have a huge issue with the bacteria in the water.  We talked about other swimming venues - but truth be told, there are not a lot of bodies of water that are not affected by this flooding.  Easter Lake is very small, and the transition there would be a nightmare - and thy might have to do something about wave sizes (the race is booked solid).  Copper creek lake is available, but we got so much rain this weekend, that it might have issues as well.  If they use Copper Creek, they would have to chang the course imensely, and they would have to have two seperate transition areas (Copper Creek is on the far Eastern side of town, out by the fairgrounds) Copper Creek is also small, and would probably require two swimming laps (swim once, get out run back to the start and swim again).

This guys says that a Du is the worst case scenario, but is still a scenario.  I asked him if people would get their money back if it got changed to a Du and he just looked at me.  Sorry I don't have better news than that.

Obviously this is a real bummer on many fronts - the folks in the area are really having a tough time.

So, if worse comes to worse and they change the HyVee tri to a du - what should I do?

honestly if I had about another month or so of training and more running under my belt, I probably wouldn't think twice about it, I'd just go for it

I'm just nervous because I seriously have only run the 10k distance 2 or 3 times, I train by time rather than distance, and have just now gotten to the point that I can sometimes do the the full 10k in the time on the plan - it varies based on if it's following a bike, the weather, all that stuff

There is also the reality of crunchy knees and  a past season of dealing with PF which took nearly a year to get past

walking a portion of it doesn't really bother me - although to be honest, to have to do two of the legs in my worst discipline almost assures that I will be DFL.  Seriously, I am almost always last in my AG and way BOP in the run as it is - although I have made a lot of progress, I'm just not certain what it would be if I extended it beyond what I have trained for

I know it's not about what place you come in - I know that better than anyone - LOL, but I don't really want to be DFL either and yes, DFL is better than DFN - but, well you know....

thoughts?

Beth, are you sure they'd be switching to a true duathlon, and not just a bike-run? When the swim was cancelled in my tri last November, they just dropped the first leg and left it a bike-run (I think they knew that most of the racers would be under-trained for a true du, because the pros did a run-bike-run).

Even if it is a real duathlon, I think you should go for it and just walk if you need to. I've had three iffy race experiences: first tri, they cancelled the swim; second, I was very, very BOP; third was cancelled outright. By far the worst experience was the one I never got to do -- even the race that I suffered and sucked at, I was glad I'd done it at the end. Keep in mind, you can always drop out if you are miserable and/or think you're heading for injury.

Let's hope it doesn't come down to a du!

I'm really sorry about the weather and conditions, and how it's affecting your race. Nevertheless, I say go for it, Bethie. Especially if they change it to a bike-run, and probably even so if a du. If you are going to do the du, if I were you (ha ha ha ... Dr. Seuss ... sorry!), I might plan to walk the first leg.

Look at it as a training day, or the opportunity to revisit what truly means the most in this sport (or in life, really): just to participate and have fun.

It is not, in fact, important to push ourselves in every race.

Maybe have a look at the BOPer thread ... there's a lot of joy there.

Alrighty then - I'm going for it!  It's almost a certainty that there will be no swim -

more rain on the way - I feel so bad for the people there, I remember when my aunt and uncle went through the whole flooding thing - it was awful

at any rate - do you guys think I should adjust my training plan based on this information?

should I replace my swim workouts with runs or just stay the course?

I think I'd just stick to the workouts you have planned--overtraining on the run now would probably be worse than doing an extra run on the day of the race.  If they do a run/bike/run, could you find a teammate to do one of the runs?  In any case, listen to your body and don't reinjure yourself!!!

The weather this spring is just nuts!  It's in the 40s and gray here again today.  I wore wool socks and boots and a sweater yesterday (and yes, pants, for those wondering about my sanity).

Keep us posted!  I haven't been on logs much lately.....will try to this afternoon, but school ends today so my quiet time in the afternoon does as well.  Wish me luck.

good point about overtraining on the run

I doubt that it will be an option to team up with anyone since I'm already registered as an individual

I am so glad you are going to du it!  Do you know the distances they would substitute?  I cannot imagine the first run leg would be a 10K.  Since all of have done is du's, I treat the first run as a medium hard effort, bike my brains out and then hold on for dear life on that last run!  I think you will have a blast.  Treat it as a good training effort and you will do great!
