Jeepguy2358 - 2009-04-26 9:41 PM Someone asked for race pics yesterday.  Finally got them off my camera.  They are in my album if you want to see them.

Thanks for sharing the pics.  They are great!

Andy--sounds like you might have a bit of a balance issue in the water.  I strongly suggest drills, there are a lot of good recommendations on this site.  For a while I was skipping them in favor of "trying" to do straight swimming and I think new people need to do both.  I am back drilling for about 30% of the workout.  If you can, have a swim coach watch you in the H20 and give you some pointers.  You might be lifting your head, thus sinking your legs.

Tony and Jeremy--again great job on yesterday.  I think we need a little more detail on how things went from Tony, don't you?  so far I know he did well and drank a lot of beer.  Is that new?

Hey other racers, what happened with your events?

I personally am itching to get back to work, but my training plan is blank for the rest of the month.  I promised myself I would not get back into things fully until 5/1, now I am drumming my fingers on the table wondering what to do????? One thing for sure, is back to normal eating.  I give myself one week of crap before getting back on plan.  That week is up today and I still have half a birthday cake left. Sigh!

LOL, Suzy I was beat last night.  Got up at 4:30, raced, took kids out to ride their bikes, took kids to a park, went to a tent sale that had free beer, all in 90 degree weather, so I went to bed at 9:00 last night.

Race was really good, Swam 1:40/100's but was beat at the end.  Had to ditch my tri-top before the race started becasue I swam a 50 in it and it felt like I was wearing a drag suit.  Put the shirt back on in T1 so that wasted time, plus I was very disorganized there.

Got out and hammered the bike, passed a lot of people, bumpy ride, stem came loose and lol it took me a bit to realize that my aerobars were pointed down, tried to pull them up and ended up riding with them up in the air, until I hit a bump again and was able to push them down.  21.9 on the bike (nice that BT rounds me up to 22)

31 second T2, since I arrived riding on top of my shoes and jumped off the bike and was in the first rack  3rd fastest here overall.

Run was only 2 miles and my legs didn't really open up until the 1/2 way point, ended up running 8:04/miles which is blazing for me, didn't wear my garmin so wasn't getting any feedback which was good I guess but now I miss having the numbers to pour through after the race.

Lost first by 40 seconds, and the 1st and 2nd place guy ran 6:30/mile and 7:15/mile  respectively so I lost it on the run.

LOL Suzy, know any way to knock a minute or two off my pace?  Actually I need to really take the time to go back through my BT plan and replace all the runs with a runnersworld plan.  They have much better detail on pacing, and I like their long, short, speed/tempo setup.

3rd in my AG and 11th overall, though this is out of 10 and 57 so it is a pretty small race.  My wife got 2nd in AG and 5th or 7th overall I can't remember which.

Good start to the season.

Also for everyone that is still waiting to do their first race, this was my first race exactly one year ago, and I came from no endurance background, did stuff but a long run for me was a 5k.  I took almost 18 minutes off my overall time.

Also in 1 year this is the first time I have done a race that is the exact same distance so I finally have something to compare with.

Best advice I can give is to look into taking some lessons.  I had the exact same think last year, I could go or I could sink, not much in-between.  Just a few lessons were enough to help me get a few gears to work with.  Not that any of them are over-drive yet but still nice to have some options when swimming.

First, terrific job.  I laughed at the aerobar comment and think you need to give me lessons in transitions.  Both of mine were over 1:20 last year.  Great to see the improvement.

Re: Speed.  For sprint or even Olympic distances, Tempo runs and intervals (800s ideael) would be your best bet in the short term. I would also recommend running hard off the bike for 10-15 minutes in training below your 10K pace to get used to what that feels like.  It kind of sucks, but it works. I need to do that this year.  Longer term,  I would devote time to running in lieu of biking or swimming.  You will get some of that with your marathon training, but slot in 10Ks and half marathons along the way.  The work you go through for those events will give you greater endurance at faster paces.

Thanks guys.

Also, shoes need to be replaced, was using Brooks Glycerin, before that Asics Gel Nimbus.

Not 100% sold on either shoe, any recommendations?

Doing bunch of tri's, none over 10k run + bunch of running races 5k - 10 miler + MCM in October.  Should I get the same shoe for all?  LOL, never put that much thought into my running shoes other than going to a good shop and having them look at my gait and recommend a shoe.

I think I want to try something lighter but not sure if my feet will be able to handle it for longer runs.

IMO, the whole lighter running shoe does not make it a better running shoe and it isn't going to make you faster.  Lots of us need some level of suppport so don't get sucked into that if you need a stability or motion control shoe.  I like Brooks Adrenalines, but they may not be for you.  I have tried many that are definitely not good for me.  I think getting your gait analyzed is the best idea.

Can I ask a CT question or two?  Can you or someone point me in the direction of how to set up spin scan? also, why does my Garmin tell me I am going faster than my CT does?  There is a good 1-1.5mph difference between the two.  Does the fact I have 650 wheels have anything to do with it?

Tony... I've been running in Asics GT series (currently GT-2140) for ~ 6 years now.  Love em'.  I don't see any reason to buy different shoes for those distances.  Would try to find something you like before the long runs kick in for the MCM training.

I noticed the MCM medals are different now too.  I got a dog tag medal.  New one is the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.  Its SWEET!

What do you mean set up spin scan?  If you have the cadence magnet on and plugged in (make sure it is secured and not hanging so you don't snap the cable in 2 like I did...)

Once you have that set up if you are in 3d just hit F2 to change display and it will show up split screen and you should see it.  You have the radar looking thing or bar-graph to choose from, I like the bar-graph, easier to understand.

As for speed, they measure it differently, but not sure why they should be that much, on my PT they are pretty close but I will look tonight to see what the diff is.

I do.  Shows you where you are slacking in your pedal stroke, and always interesting to see how much your left leg is working vs. right leg.  Becomes kind of a game to see if you can get 50/50 and a smooth constant stroke.

Wow... I would say that this weekend was a HUGE success for everyone!  High Fives to all.  I probably had one of my toughest training weekends ever this weekend, but a GOOD ONE AT THAT!

Chris- Awesome job on your race, and very cool pictures!  I dig the bike!

Izzy- Take care of that IT band.  It doesn't take care of itself, and as you probably now that can be VERY NAGGING!  Great race otherwise!  I don't know if you have ever tried TP massage balls, but they work wonders...

Shannon- I understand that you hate running.  That is understandable, and normal with a lot of people.  It's boring, it's hard, I don't feel like I ever get better!  All true, but can all be changed! My very 1st 5k was maybe 9 years ago, and I had to walk probably 1 1/2 miles of it!  I learned from that, and moved on.  The Garmin can be a great learning tool, and if you use the Virtual Partner as a pace setter it is pretty neat!  It keeps you moving forward!  BUT DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED!

Andy- You did your ride, your stuck it out, you learned from it, and you now know what it is you need to work on... Sounds like a success to me... Focus on your nutrition.  This is probably a good indication of why you were cramping.

Roni--- Very nicely done on your race.  And you were thinking of not doing it!! BOOYAAH!!!

Suzy--- The new avatar... SEXY MOMMA!  I like it!  And yes the spin scan is a very useful tool.  Especially climbing hills, you will be able to tell that you are favoring one leg or the other.  Keeps you totally focused!

Jeremy--- What a race!  Just think you have only been on that bike for a month or so!?  Watch out for Jeremy!  And welcome to the world of one of the toughest age groups!  In order to qualify for Hawaii you need to do a sub 10hr! It's BRUTUAL!  But you are well on your way!

Tony--- Man what improvements over last year!  You have got to feel good about this!!! I think where most time can be made up in race's is the bike, and you did that!  The run is discouraging and when you see someone put up a 5:35 mile... UGH!  I did a race 2 years ago where I was 2nd out of the water, 3rd in on the bike, and finished 21st overall... That was after running a 7:10 5k... I was happy, and pissed at the same time!  It was just demoralizing watching everyone stride past me!  As for your shoes... Try out the Brooks Ghost for your longer runs.  If you are wanting racing flats for 10k or less I recommend the T5 Racer (also by Brooks!)....

Great job again to everyone this weekend.  Sorry I didn't chime in more this weekend, but both Saturday, and Sunday after my ride's I had to shower, change, and grab a recovery shake as we had to be at a dinner BOTH NIGHTS!!! I am just catching up!!!

I those who in need of new running shoes..  my friend sent me this article over the weekend.  I've read similar articles to this as well.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1170253/The-painful-truth-trainers-Are-expensive-running-shoes-waste-money.html

I usually go to a running store and try on a bunch of shoes and have them analyze them on a computer (my shoe store is pretty good.. they let you use the shoes for 10 days and if you don't like them exchange them for another pair).  I had used 2 brooks Adrenalin's for around a 6-8 months and found i could only use them for 250 - 300 miles..  so i though I'd switch it up a little.  Now I'm mainly running with Asics Kayano 15 and sometimes use my zoots.  I like the Asics so far and the zoots i can only run with them with thin socks even though they're made for sock less wear.  I've used them once without socks and had 3 blisters..  2 under the arches and one under the big toe and from the sounds of it many people have the same hot spots..  With the thin socks the zoots are a pretty nice running shoe as well.. very light and good for people who pronate (and they're tri specific shoe)..

Hey Andy IF I was you I'd at least do the churn and not the sink.

I think you will find that swimming is all about technique. If you can get that down pat then you shouldn't have too many other problems with your swim. Kevin Koskella has a good swim DVD out on this website. I bought it last year and along with a few weeks of working with an instructor it has helped me immeasurably. The rhythm you are looking for comes with practice and if you were not a swimmer before it will take time to acquire this. Just ask Suzy. One of the major things I learned was to rotate my body with each stroke so that I was essentially gliding through the water almost on my side. (less drag on your body).  When coming forward for a stroke, drop your arm into the water at just ahead of your head and reach or stretch forward and glide a bit before pulling back with your arm. I too can actually swim at the same speed doing this as when I was churnning the water at a faster arm rate. It is much easier on your body to stroker fewer times.  Hope that helps a bit.

I did two sprints on back to back weekends, the first one was better also shorter and in phoenix ( hot dry no wind no hills).
The second was yesterday here in texas and it was colder, very windy and raining. Bottom line I think that the first one
I had more patience, yesterday I was grouchy and hated everything about the course ( new course, race started late, lots of
confused people wandering into the course).

Question to the group when you have a B or C race how do you mentally prepare? Do you treat it as a good workout and see how you feel?

thanks

Nice job on the back to back events, especially in crummy weather.  For me, I usually focus on one or two things I want to improve on in my B or C races.  It might be fueling, transitions, or running off the bike really well.  I did a 50K relay a couple weeks ago and was practicing pacing for a different race.  It was zero pressure which made it more fun.

Beth that is a great question.  B & C race's are tough.  You will find that everyone has a different mentality.  Some don't believe in the A,B,C type races.  Every race is a race right?

Others might be on the side of A, B, C races.  I think it more depends about time in between races on whether it is A, B, C, etc.. I treat every race, as a survive and do what I know!  Race Smart, Be Strong, and Stay Positive.... NO MATTER the outcome!  But every race is the same for me.

To answer your question though, work on the little stuff that is most important.... Nutrition, Drafting (on swim and run), Pacing (did you go to hard to early, did you leave too much in the tank at the end, etc).  What is your goal for that particular race.  I think if you signed up for that race you signed up for a reason?  Practice?  Beat last years time?

I am doing a 1/2 Marathon in 2 weeks that I signed up for and it is solely to pace my sister to the finish in her first race.  So I know that I am going to have to keep a steady pace, keep her positive, and motivated (I can't believe she is trusting her little brother for this !!!).  Different mindset but I know that going into this race.  But that is what I CHOOSE to get out of this particular race.

I hope any of this makes sense.  But 2 races in 2 weeks! NICE WORK BETH!!!

Well I got to be part of a rely team for the Memorial Marathon on Sunday.   I ran the 12K leg of the race in 1hr/19min (which was a PB for me) and had a blast!!  The weather was hot & muggy and the wind was brutal - 20 to 30 mph wind gusts, but the race itself was great.  There were around 19,000 participants and about 4500 volunteers.  There were people along the entire stretch of the race cheeing you on.  Hardly even noticed all the windTongue out.  Well, thats 1 down and 4 to go.  My next race is in 3 weeks - oly tri.  Can't wait!!

Congrats to everyone else who raced this past weekend.  Great job!!

Well hello all....Today was the day from Hell!!

I was a good boy, got up and hit the pool at 5:30. Came out to my car after, and  had the back passenger window smashed...2 of us were broken into. What kind of criminals are out at 6am? RETARDS i say!! And of course, I had my gym bag, and running bag in the back seat.( I know, I know, silly but cmon its 6am!). All day  I felt so dumb and pissed off at the same time. You kind of feel violated or intruded. I know better now. Everything in the trunk!
Anyhow, here is my gonzo list: Garmin 305(with HRM),8gb IPOD touch with brand new senheiser headphones, 2 pair of runners, running pants, couple of t shirts, and my custom orthotics, and all the other gym bag stuff.
Was about $1000, with another $350 for the window. Looked into claiming it, but with deductables its not really worth it.

On the positive side, I ended up taking the day off work to file police reports, take my car in and shop. Bought a new ipod and headphones, new runners(Saucony Progrid Ride), and some new gym clothes.  And looking at picking up that new Garmin whenever it comes out.....Good times for sure.
Have a good night all.

Hi everyone.  Sorry I've been out for a while.  Great job to everyone who raced or had a successful training week.  I'll be checking in with everyone's RR and logs this week.  It turns out Linda (Havin'Fun) and I live in the same town so we met up for a bike ride this weekend and had a lovely time.  Funny how BT can bring people together.

I am SUPPOSE to be racing my HIM this weekend, but I don't think the race Gods want me to. I've been having severe cough and sore throat issues all weekend.  I'm trying to convince myself my throat problems are from allergies and yelling too much at my husband's race on Saturday and NOT from Strep Throat.  I sounded horrible riding with Linda yesterday and the yelling over the wind on a bike ride didn't help.  My voice was completely gone this morning and I've been sucking on cough drops and tea all day and trying not to talk too much - very hard for me.  Cough was breaking and painful in the morning but better towards the end of the day.  My voice almost sounded normal after dinner so I thought I would try a fast 5K.  Got to half a mile and my throat was ON FIRE!  Cut the run short and the voice is completely gone again and it really hurts to swallow.   FIRST THE BIKE CRASH, THEN TENDONITIS, NOW THIS!!!!

Sorry to complain, I usually don't (unless it's cold Wink), but this really sucks!!   Think I'll call the doctor tomorrow to confirm what this crud is.

Someone with allergies please tell me they have this problem too.

On a positive note, the foot felt fine during the bike ride and the run tonight.  That's encouraging.
