What is everyone else doing to adjust for heat and get ready for a hot course?

Driving around with my windows up and heater on.

Olympic yesterday -
86 degree water temp for the swim
90 degrees for the bike with minimal shade
95      "         "    "   run     "         "           "

Today -
Rode 71 miles - start temp - 87, finish temp 103 (3:30 pm)

I'm trying to work on that acclimation thing.    Luckily, I felt great for both.  No dehydration issues at all.

hrliles - 2010-06-11 10:37 PM This has probably been covered 10x all ready but can anyone give me a best rundown of expectation of the swim course.  From what I can tell a little current against for 1500-1800 yards upstream the around the island then a decent current with you for the remainder downstream?

My understanding is that there are locks (sp?) up river that control the flow.  When they are open there is a pretty stong current, but when they are closed it there is very little current.

When we are tapering and crazy we get closer I figured I would try to find the schedule for the locks.

Living and training in Central TX.  Ran 10+ miles on Saturday in 91 deg, 70% RH.  (It was ugly.)  Rode 77 miles on Sunday in 88 deg, 80% RH and ~20mph head wind on the "back."  (Even more ugly.)

Does it get windy in Louisville?  I can handle heat and humidity, and don't mind wind, but I want to be mentally prepared if that's a prevailing condition.

Yes it gets really windy. Saturday it was blowing at 10 mph steady with 15 gust. 42 is always windy in the way home.

The Powerbar drink they sent me was a screw on cap.  Will they have the kind with a drinking spigot cap like Gatorade previously had?  Or will we be fumbling with pouring the drink into bike bottles?

I can only assume that they will be making big batches from a drink mix version of the stuff.

I finally tried it out this past weekend, and though I was able to handle it fine, it just isn't enough calories for me. At least I know its safe to drink if I need it and during the run.

I plan on taking 3-4 bottles of Infinit w/me to start, then switch the Powerade & gels if I need something other than H2O.  Good to know that it doesn't cause the GI problems for me that Gatorade has in the past.

The folks over at ST say that it will have sports caps.

I'm finally to that point again where IM training has completely taken over my life.  I knew it was coming....I'm either training, or thinking about training, or wondering if what I'm eating will be the best thing for getting ready for training or recovering from training.  Everything I do is scheduled around it.  I take of work to get in the longer stuff.  I'm trying to be creative with my kids while they are out of school, but tagging along to my workouts may not be so fun in another month.  I still have a long way to go, and can't wait to do it, but I'm going to be happy when it's over.

Amen to that and it is gonna get worse before it gets better.   We start our budget season at work soon that between that and training I will be lucky to get sleep.

Does anyone know anything about VIP passes? I read about certain IM races having them for spectators and athletes and did not know if IMKY also had them. What do they entail and how would you get one? More curious for my sherpa than myself.

I don't know about IM branded events, but my volunteer credentials got me food and beverages and access almost anywhere I wanted at Beach 2 Battleship last year.  And, the volunteering was really fun. :  )

Agreed!  I picked up the BT Intermediate plan after giving up on doing my own plan.  I wasn't pushing myself hard enough and was focusing too much on volume... just 3 days into this plan and I can tell it'll be better than what I was doing since it's already kicking my butt!

You started up just in time to do that hill run!  That's the first run that hasn't said 'flat to rolling course.'  I literally climbed for 30 minutes straight then turned around and pounded back down.  I think it was the downhill that got my legs feeling it today.  Climbed over 600 ft.

Guess I better pick a plan and start training.  How far is it again?  Something like a Sprint, just a few miles longer, right?

Destroyer - 2010-06-18 2:04 PM So here's what I'm thinking for the swim...

After the swim at Eagleman HIM last weekend I'd totally be down for that!! I've never swum slower than 2:00/100 at a race and my swim from Eagleman was 2:50/100!!  Talk about discouraging, I spent the first 10 miles of the bike freaking out that I might not make the swim cut off at KY.  I was seriously in a panic.  Apparently, though, the course was long and/or there was a bad current because everyone had slow swim times... phew!

15 mile run this morning in high humidity and fairly warm (mid 80's). I used the Perform drink this morning and did not have any GI issues.

Does anyone know if this stuff is available in  stores yet? or is is mail order only?

71 days and a wake up until the race.
